Aggies Handle UTEP
Staff Reports

Coach Eric Taylor couldn't have asked for a better home debut. The Aggies had a much better go around, in the I-10 Rivalry match up against UTEP.

It all started with the defense, for the Aggies, as a quickly defensive stop led to a first quarter field goal from Nick Bishop. Bishop nailed a 23 yard field, after Jim Clement led the Aggies down the field, in his return following an injury.

Safety Brandon McKinney scored the first Aggies touchdown of the season, as he returned an interception 85 yard yards for a score. The touchdown gave the Aggies a 10-0 lead.

The second quarter saw UTEP strike, as they grabbed three points on a field goal, tightening the score to 10-3. The Aggies answered right back though, as the first offensive touchdown of 2011 came on a Clement to Terry Wynn 28 yard touchdown pass, pushing the Aggie lead to 17-3.

After a spirited first half, the Aggies drained the clock in the second half - tacking on two more field goals in the third and fourth quarters, ending the game at 23-3.

The Aggies will be back in action next week, as they travel to San Jose State to take on the 0-3 Spartans. The Spartans have faced one of the toughest schedules in the country, losing to Stanford, UCLA, and Nevada - who are all undefeated.

Re: #OutsideTheBox | A New Mexico State Dynasty (NCAA 12)

Taylor, Aggies Land First Recruit in 2011

Coach Eric Taylor pulled in his first recruit at NMSU, he revealed to boosters on Sunday. Joining the Aggies will be Carlos Austin, who is labeled as a CB, from Duncanville, Texas.

Here's Taylor's tidbit on Austin;

"Carlos will have a chance to be a dynamic player from day one. He is quick, especially on the first step. We've talked through ideas with him, and while he may not start on defense right away - we want him working with our return unit as soon as he gets here. I think he has a tremendous chance to be one of the best returners in the country."

Taylor's quote makes it seem that Austin will likely not stay on the roster as a CB. Scout.com agrees with Taylor on the speed and quickness, but they do note that Austin's coverage skills are poor. Either he will take time to develop there, or he will be a special teams only player.

Taylor also noted that they have targeted all of the high school prospects that they intend to target this fall. He currently has that list narrowed down to 11 players. He also noted that this past week, his staff touched base with several JUCO players, as he has now made public that he is going to recruit heavily in the JUCO ranks, in an effort to build the Aggies program quicker. Taylor couldn't give a status on where NMSU stands with the JUCO players, as they have just been added to the board. Currently, 23 JUCO players are being targeted. Taylor has called each of these players "day one starters."

Re: #OutsideTheBox | A New Mexico State Dynasty (NCAA 12)

Aggies Run Past Lobos
Staff Reports

Coach Eric Taylor couldn't do much but smile.

In his introductory press conference, he made sure to note that the Aggies would not accept losing to the New Mexico Lobos - so far, he's made good on that promise.

It didn't start out great for the Aggies, as the unexpected up-tempo offense drove down the field when Jim Clement threw an interception that he noted as "Unacceptable."

The Lobos then took their turn driving down the field, being held to a field goal by a tough Aggies defense.

The Aggies, sporting a new offensive scheme, drove up and down the field in the first half. They were able to get one touchdown on the board, as Norris Rhodes scooted in from one yard out. The Aggies were also able to kick two field goals, as the reliable Nick Bishop nailed both from inside 30 yards.

The first half ended with the Aggies up, 13-3.

Then, the Aggies blew the proverbial roof off of the Lobos stadium.

A second half explosion with 35 points ultimately led to a blowout Aggies win. Led by a potent rushing attack, the Aggies scored five touchdowns, with four of the five coming on the ground.

"Our goal coming into this week was to open up our playbook. We've been pretty reserved so far as we figure out what we are as a team. I told the guys to play loose, fast, and excited. I think they did that well," said Taylor.

The running back depth chart got a good workout, as every running back marked active for the game touched the ball - gashing the Lobos defense with fresh legs.

"We obviously created a prime opportunity for ourselves. We know that the Lobos scouted and prepared for us to be a team that ran around 50 plays a game. We ended up running 84 plays, while taking the foot off the gas in the fourth quarter. I think we emptied their tanks and were able to accomplish our goals," stated Taylor.

The Aggies ended the game, winning 48-13, and extending their series streak to three wins. The Aggies will return home to face Idaho, after a bye week, for a WAC game.

Re: #OutsideTheBox | A New Mexico State Dynasty (NCAA 12)

Aggies Pull Away From Vandals
Staff Reports

Another week, another style of play from the Aggies - this time, changed by the visiting Idaho Vandals.

On the heels of the Aggies thrashing New Mexico, Idaho came prepared to stop the outside run - pushing the Aggies inside and getting several stops to slow down the "Bolt Offense," as Coach Eric Taylor has nicknamed the new scheme.

While limited in throwing action, Senior Quarterback Jim Clement made a couple of huge throws, hitting fellow Senior Wide Receiver, James Bratton, twice on 35 yard touchdown throws.

The Vandals fought hard on the day, but the loss of their starting Quarterback and Running Back potentially doomed their bid for a road win.

The Aggies make the long trek to Hawai'i, this week, to face the (2-3) Warriors.
