Re: Bringing the Lombardi back to Bourbon Street

New Orleans decides to move on from Drew Brees

A new season with new management, GM Marc Raymond has decided that the team should move away from veteran & Super Bowl winning QB Drew Brees. "We respect Drew and all the contributions he has brought to this organization but it's time to move in a new direction" - Marc Raymond.

Drew Brees was traded to the San Fransisco 49ers for a 2018 2nd Round & 4th Round pick. Luke McCown will take over the reigns as the new starting QB for the New Orleans Saints.

WEEK 1: Oakland Raiders (0-0) vs. New Orleans Saints (0-0)

Game MVP: Oakland Raiders Defense

The feeling of letting a game slip through your hands is very frustrating and this game was no different. We held the Raiders to 100 total yards of offense but we couldn't stop turning the ball over on offense. Luke McCown was 15 for 20, 279 yards with 1 TD and 4 INTs. We drove the ball consistently but the Saints playbook kept calling for passes in the red zone that led to our demise. Both run games were non-existent with (OAK) Latavius Murray rushing 10 for 25 yards and (NO) RBs Mark Ingram & Tim Hightower rushing 9 for 31 yards.

We were able to throw one touchdown to Coby Fleener to take a 13-10 lead in the 4th quarter. The game seemed over since I consistently stopped Oakland but a pick six by Bruce Irvin with 3 mins left gave the Raiders the victory.

Results: 17-13 Loss

WEEK 2: New Orleans Saints (0-1) vs. New York Giants (0-1)

Game MVP: New York Giants Defense

Week 2 was a spitting image of Week 1. We were able to keep the Giants offense in check with Eli Manning completing 16 of 19 for 172 yards and 0 TDs. Shane Vereen ran 14 times for 31 yards as well. Luke McCown wasn't total garbage but he was 16 of 30 for 153 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs. Mark Ingram had a decent game with 11 carries for 49 yards but down the stretch, we needed to pass to catch up.

Similar to week 1, Landon Collins intercepted McCown late in the 4th quarter to give the Giants the victory.

Results: 13-10 Loss

Re: Bringing the Lombardi back to Bourbon Street

Week 3: Atlanta Falcons (2-0) vs. New Orleans Saints (0-2)

Game MVP: Mark Ingram

This game was the 10 year anniversary of the Saints returning to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. This game was a shootout with both teams putting on great offensive performances. Matt Ryan completed 14 of 18 for 302 yards with 2 TDs & 1 INT while Luke McCown completed 20 of 26 for 333 yards with 1 TD & 1 INT. The difference in the game was in the running department. Both backs had over 100 yards with Devonta Freeman having 14 carries for 123 yards & 1 TD but Mark Ingram had a statement game with 17 carries for 125 yards & 3 TDs.

Ingram was able to find success running the ball which took pressure off McCown. Ingram led the team to a 4th quarter lead of 35-24. Atlanta scored late to make the game 35-30 but the Saints were able to recover the onside kick and win their first game of the season.

Results: 35-30 Win

Re: Bringing the Lombardi back to Bourbon Street

Week 4: New Orleans Saints (1-2) vs. San Diego Chargers (2-1)

Game MVP: Mark Ingram

Coming into Week 4, we decided to give 2nd string QB Garrett Grayson the start. That was a huge mistake. Grayson was horrendous completing 9 of 16 for 85 yards with 0 TDs & 3 INTs. Phillip Rivers gashed the Saints defense completing 23 of 30 for 202 with 2 TDs.

The saving grace of this game was bringing in Luke McCown who was 6 of 6 for 97 yards with 1 TD and feeding Mark Ingram the ball. Ingram rushed for 111 yards on 13 carries with 2 TDs while Chargers RB Melvin Gordon had 16 carries for 54 yards with a fumble.

The new found success of the running game gave the Saints the edge in San Diego giving us our 2nd win of the season.

Results: 21-14 Win

Re: Bringing the Lombardi back to Bourbon Street

Week 5: Bye

On Bye week we focused on players we were going to resign or let go

Resign:

FB: John Kuhn (Signed)
WR: Willie Snead IV (Signed)
CB: Sterling Moore (Signed)

Let Go:

RG: Jahri Evans

The decision to let go of Evans is due to Andrus Peat replacing him once he returns from injury. Evans is 33 years old and I don't see him being a part of the future especially for the money he wants.

Not Sure:

LG: Tim Lelito

Lelito is 27 years old but he doesn't have great stats. His run block is 74 and his pass block is 76. I don't see him developing much so if the money is right I will probably bring him back.

RB: Tim Hightower

Ingram has developed into the #1 RB on the roster and I do like Hightower but with his limited use, I would rather have a speedy/elusive back to backup Ingram going into the 2017-18 season.
