Recruiting Update
Lobos recruiting update QB commit, FS on the way? Eric Raster, Lobos Blogger Just over a week after hosting quarterback prospect Steve Long (#53 QB, Henderson, KY), the Lobos secured the verbal commitment of the signal caller. "I was real impressed with the way they opened up the offense Saturday in San Antonio," he said, mentioning that he streamed the game at home with his family. "I like the run-pass combination they get from their quarterback, but seeing a commitment to passing more was enough for me. I'm closing down my recruiting and officially committing to being a Lobo next fall!" A second year starter at QB, he held an offer from New Mexico and reported interest from Hawaii, TCU, Oregon, and Minnesota. The fact that higher-rated players have recently been making visits and committing to the Power Five programs he considered may have had an impact on his early decision. "I thought after visiting campus a week ago, I loved it out there -- cool mountain air and beautiful scenery -- and the campus was great. I loved the guys I've met on the team, and the coaches have been first class all the way, why not get on board now and help bring in some more guys for this 2018 class." In a surprising turn of events, #10 free safety prospect Michael Terrell, who also visited New Mexico for the Rio Grande Rivalry, announced via Twitter Sunday evening that he was no longer considering Utah. Terrell visited the campus for their game against #20 Stanford on Saturday evening, and according to inside reports, the Utes were anything but one big happy family. Terrell graciously tweeted "Thanks to Coach Whittingham and all the Utah staff, but I'm focused now on New Mexico, Colorado State, and Wyoming in my recruitment." Some sources close to the Utah program mentioned a less than ideal atmosphere during the 35-3 loss to the Cardinal, including a reported fight between players in the locker room after the game. Utah AD Chris Hill also made comments critical of the coaching staff during and after the loss. It is intriguing that a top-10 player at his position has narrowed his interest to three MWC division rivals, but New Mexico may have the inside track to sign Terrell. With senior Jacob Girgle holding down the starting position and two true freshmen behind him on the depth chart, Terrell would certainly compete for a starting job right out of the gate. We'll keep you posted on developments as we hear them.
