Re: Smoky Mountain State University | A Teambuilder/Story Dynasty (NCAA 14)

New Orleans Bowl: Louisiana Tech vs. SMSU

Steve Porter TD.jpg
Freshman WR Steve Porter had a fantastic game as he hauled in 2 TD catches

Wow... Here we were... Just two and a half years after our football program was announced, we found ourselves in a bowl game after winning a Conference Championship.

A lot of hard work has been put into this team. And not only has our staffs hard work showed, but the players hard work has showed.

We came into this game ready to show the nation we were for real and weren't just a fluke team who takes advantage of a conference with only one other team (besides ourselves) with a record of 6-6 or better.

We punched Louisiana Tech in the mouth early. Like, if there was ever a way to start off a bowl game... This was it.

On our first possession, we scored quickly. Senior HB Norris Blalock started off his last collegiate game with a 12 yard TD run to give us the early lead.

Two plays into Louisiana Tech's next possession, SS Kris Fordinal made a leaping INT which set us up with great field position.

On the very first play of our drive, Tony Amos threw a bullet over the middle of the field to WR Steven McDaniel who had gotten behind the LA Tech secondary. McDaniel scored with ease on the play that covered 30 yards.

In the span of 41 seconds, the game had gone from 9-0 to 14-0 in our favor.

The Bulldogs scored later in the Quarter on a 29 yard FG to cut into our lead. Heading into the 2nd Quarter, we held the 14-3 lead.

The game was about to get a bit crazy...

Early in the 2nd Quarter, we scored again. This time, Tony Amos threw a touch pass to Senior WR Kenyon Meeks who ran the out route. If Amos threw anything but a touch pass, the DB covering Meeks had a chance to intercept it.

LA Tech responded with a 31 yard FG to cut our lead to 21-6.

After a 55 yard kickoff return by Tauren Peters, we were set up with great field position. Tony Amos scrambled for 29 yards on the first play of the drive. Then, two plays after that, we were in the end zone again. Amos threw a bullet to Freshman WR Steve Porter on the curl route. Porter broke a tackle and ran the rest of the way into the end zone untouched.

But... Back came Louisiana Tech... Junior WR Marcus Gaines returned the kickoff 93 yards for the TD. The Bulldogs then attempted to go for 2, but they were stuffed at the goal line by LE Matt Chase. The score was now 28-12.

Finally, as time expired in the 2nd Quarter, we scored on a 36 yard FG to increase our lead to 31-12 heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs opened up the 2nd half scoring with their 3rd Field Goal of the game. This time, it was a 39 yard FG from the left hash.

We responded with the only other score of the 3rd Quarter as Tony Amos threw a deep ball to Freshman WR Steve Porter. Porter got behind the Bulldogs' secondary, and Amos put the pass right where it needed to be. Porter caught the ball in stride and scored on the 48 yard scoring play.

Heading into the 4th Quarter, we held the 38-15 lead... And we were just one quarter away from winning our first ever bowl game.

We got on the board first in the 4th Quarter as Senior HB Tauren Peters scored on a 15 yard TD run. He was tackled forward into the end zone.

LA Tech finally scored their first offensive touchdown of the game with 3:35 left in the game as Junior QB Price Wilson threw a dart 26 yard dart to slot receiver Alfred Smith on the post route.

We would score one final time in the game as Freshman QB Brandon Lewis threw a 7 yard TD pass to Nick Brewer on the slant route.

Louisiana Tech then ran the clock out on their ensuing possession.

The clock hit 0 here in New Orleans... We had done it.

We had won our first bowl game appearance by a score of 52-22.

Not only had we won our first bowl game, we had also hit 10 wins on the season.

Norris Blalock TD.jpg
Senior HB Norris Blalock opens the game off with this TD run in the 1st Quarter

Steven McDaniel TD.jpg
Sophomore WR Steven McDaniel has been our most explosive WR all season. Here, he got behind the secondary and scored on this 30 yard TD.

Tauren Peters TD.jpg
Senior HB Tauren Peters scores on this 15 yard run in the 4th Quarter

Micah Francis, Ray Jones Tackle.jpg
Backups, DE Micah Francis, and OLB Ray Jones, picked LA Tech WR Carlos Henderson up off the ground and slammed him on the side line in quite possibly the best tackle of the season.

Re: Smoky Mountain State University | A Teambuilder/Story Dynasty (NCAA 14)

2018 Signing Day

We entered Signing Day with the 20th ranked Recruiting Class in the country. It was pivotal that we build on that and land 1, if not both of the remaining players who would be deciding today.

When you join a huge conference like the ACC, the stadium atmosphere is huge. You need to have a home field advantage when player the great competition we'll be up against. And how do you get more fans in the seats? Besides winning, is you build excitement around your program. So, if we finished with a Top 25 Signing Class, excitement in our fan base would almost certainly hit a new level.

We tried to build on this excitement by hosting our first National Signing Day live stream event. All the other schools in the ACC were doing one. So, now that we had a Top 20 class, and joined a Power 5 Conference, we felt like we'd get a solid amount of people tuning in.

Thankfully, this 2018 Signing Day wasn't filled with much drama. Last year, if you remember, we had a huge scare as WR Steve Porter nearly didn't fax us his LOI. Obviously, he did, and you saw the result. He led the team in TD's and was selected to the Freshman All-American team.

Our worrying on Signing Day was going to be relatively short. We had 23 commitments who were all solid. One of the players' we were still targeting, called me up last night and told me his decision. He called all the other coaches on his list so we could plan accordingly. The other was announcing his decision at 10:00 AM. So, besides that one player, we had an idea of what to expect.

Our day got off to an amazing start. At 8:00 AM our first fax came through. That first fax was from, QB Nick Hurd (80 ovr). The 6'5", 230 lbs. QB who wowed us during his Senior season. Hurd drew comparisons to Cam Newton based on his size and skill set. He has amazing athletic ability and I'm convinced, he'll be a star here at SMSU.

Over the next hour, 3* DE Darrell Edmonds (73 ovr), 3* MLB Jarrod Crews (76 ovr), 3* Shane Seward (79 ovr), 3* OLB Kevin White (78 ovr), and 3* P David Reid (83 ovr) all faxed in their LOI's.

Now that it was 9:00 AM, it was time for 3* DT Jason Paul's decision. He was the recruit who let me know what his decision was last night.

Paul was deciding in the basketball arena of his High School. Paul, who lived near Knoxville, had his decision live streamed via the local newspaper's website. So, that's how we watched his decision.

"I'd like to thank God for blessing me with the athletic ability that I have and for the chance to play Division 1 football. I want to thank my parents, family, coaches, teammates, and teachers for everything they've done to help mold me into the man I am today. I also want to thank the coaches Texas A&M, Louisville, LSU, SMSU, and Washington for the opportunity of a lifetime... And now, for the next 4 years, I'll be attending..."

At this point, Jason looked over at his parents and they reached under the table. Jason stood up, unzipped his sweatshirt to show an SMSU T-Shirt. At the same time his family put on SMSU hats.

Our war room went crazy. This was a HUGE commitment for us!

Jason Paul is a 6'3, 297 lbs. Defensive Tackle from Farragut High School in Farragut, TN. Paul is rated as the #25 DT in the country and the #358 overall player in the country. He is also rated as the #2 player in the state of Tennessee.

Paul committed to us over Texas A&M, who we were locked in a recruiting battle with. He also had interest from Louisville, LSU, Washington, and others.

With Paul now in our class, we now had the top 2 ranked recruits from the state of Tennessee. The #1 recruit being 3* DE, Mike Carrington.

Shortly after his announcement, we received his LOI, so it was official. Paul sent in the 7th LOI of the morning... We now had 24 commitments, 7 of which had officially signed. Now were awaiting the decision of SS Dion Warren, who would make his announcement at 10:00 AM.

By the time 10:00 AM rolled around, we had received 7 more LOI's.

Now, it was time for Dion Warren's announcement.

Dion stepped to the podium in his high school auditorium and said, "I've dreamed about this day for my entire life. I've always wanted to play Division 1 football and I'm so thankful that I have the opportunity to do so. I want to thank my parents for their love and support. I also want to thank all my coaches through the years for coaching my up and getting me ready to play at the college level. With that being said, for the next 4 years, I'll be attending Smoky Mountain State University."

Nearly everyone in our war room jumped up and started cheering at the news as Dion put on an SMSU hat.

Dion Warren is a 6'2', 218 lbs. Strong Safety from Elba High School in Elba, AL. Warren is rated as the #13 SS in the country and the #334 overall player in the country.

Warren committed to us despite us being locked in a recruiting battle with Arkansas State and Southern Miss.

In the hours leading up to his announcement, recruiting analysts believed that Arkansas State had momentum leading up to his decision... But, we prevailed and were able to get him to sign with us.

After Warren's commitment, there weren't any surprises for us. Everyone sent in an LOI when they told us they would. 3* OLB James Spencer sent in the last LOI at 1:00 PM since he's from California.

Our 2018 Signing Class went so much better than I could have ever imagined at the start of the season. Once again, we were perfect on Signing Day as both of the players deciding today chose us.

We also signed another full class of 25 players which is something we really needed since we have 24 players leaving the program due to graduation/transfers.

After all the signings today, 247 released the final recruiting rankings... And we finished with our very first Top 25 Ranked Class! After more 4 and 5 star guys signed today, we dropped down to the #25 Recruiting Class in the Nation. That is good for the #7 class in the ACC.

And I know you hear coaches say this type of thing every year. But, seriously, when we get to the top of the College Football world... This class will be the backbone of that success. Mark my words.
