Re: Carlos Hill's Story|A North Texas Dynasty
Roadrunners Run Past North Texas 23-7
UTSA QB John Cortez threw for 259 yards against North Texas.
The UTSA Roadrunners blew past an overmatched North Texas defense on Saturday. Even worse for North Texas, a possible recruit in OT Danny Hopkins came to see the Mean Green get absolutely demolished by UTSA. The interesting part about the game is that North Texas had a great offensive day besides the two interceptions, but they couldn't seem to find the end zone.
North Texas WR Michael Rubin had 7 catches for 101 yards during the game. He and QB Roger Bloom have really been clicking over the last couple weeks. Unfortunately, Rubin is the only receiver that Bloom likes to throw to. Rubin was targeted 15 times during the game on Saturday. The second most-targeted receiver was James Grimes who was targeted 8 times but only caught one pass. This wide receiver group is so capable, but they drop so many passes. Roger Bloom threw for an appalling 15/42 during the game. Don't take any credit away from UTSA's defense but when your QB is making throws that get to your receivers, and they just aren't catching the ball, then you've got a problem.
Speaking of the UTSA defense, they are incredible at getting at the QB and forcing him to make bad decisions that lead to turnovers. OLB Earl Martin managed to cause both of Roger Bloom's interceptions by hitting Bloom or by tipping the pass that Bloom threw.
The first interception came when Earl Martin of UTSA drilled North Texas QB Roger Bloom just before his release of the ball. Bloom ended up underthrowing a wide open Jacob Marin, and UTSA free safety Thomas Raymond made an athletic diving grab to come up with an interception.
The second pick came when, once again, OLB Earl Martin got into the backfield. Bloom lost track of tight end Glenn Wilson trying to dodge Martin. The ensuing pass from Bloom was tipped by Martin and fell eight yards later, into the waiting arms of ILB Johnny Johnson. Johnson returned the interception all the way back to the six. UTSA RB John Ingram would score two plays later to put the roadrunners up 17.
On the offensive side of the ball for UTSA, QB John Cortez made big plays to get his team inside the red zone including a 28-yard scamper on 3rd and 15. After getting inside the red zone, RB John Ingram would punch the ball in. Coach Carlos Hollins declined to comment about his team's poor performance (though some heard him muttering about a strong drink).
Timothy Woody ran for 144 yards against UTSA.
