PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

THE FAB 5, WEEK 6

1. ATLANTA FALCONS (4-1)

Showed no post-bye rust vs. Miami.

2. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (5-1)

The AFC is looking like the Steelers and 15 also-rans.

3. CAROLINA PANTHERS (5-1)

Becoming a big obstacle for a NFC repeat for the ATL.

4. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (5-1)

Could fall fast with Wentz out for several weeks.

5. DALLAS COWBOYS (4-1)

May only be a two-week place-holder. Should advance to 5-1 vs. the Niners, but then come the Skins, Chiefs, Falcons and Eagles, making 5-5 a possibility.

There Wentz The Eagles PLayoff Hopes?

Philly’s Carson Wentz has suffered a broken collarbone and is expected to miss about two months. Unless Nick Foles can re-live the best season of his career, which was achieved during is first stint with the Eagles, Philadelphia may be staring the collapse of its postseason ambitions. Maybe feeding LeGarrette Blount the rock 35 times a game would work.

Mahomes, Beathard To Get Week 7 Starts

With the Chiefs standing at 2-4 and Alex Smith leading the league with 12 picks, Kansas City's QB of the future is set to become the QB of now. Andy Reid has decided to bench Smith for Week 7 to get a look at how ready rookie Patrick Mahomes II is. In San Francisco, Brian Hoyer has failed to live up to modest expectations and Kyle Shanahan wants to evaluate C.J. Beathard before deciding where to go at QB in 2018.

Pats Need Huge 4th Quarter To Down Jets

After three quarters of play the New England Patriots were “winning” the battle for the AFC Least cellar, trailing Gang Green 17-10. Feeling uncomfortable about that, the Pats decided to let the Jets have their rightful place, and out-pointed them 17-0 to claim their second victory of the season.

Titans Avoid 1-5 Start

The Tennessee Titans have averted falling to 1-5 and have handed Jacoby Brissett his first loss as Andrew Luck’s stand-in, ending the Colts’ win streak at 3 games. A 2 yard run by David Fluellen with 1:21 to go broke a 20-20 tie. Indy’s effort was impacted by losing Frank Gore to a groin injury.

Re: Leonard's Losers

MUDCAT'S WAY-TOO-EARLY 2018 MOCK DRAFT #1

1. CHICAGO BEARS: Mike McGlinchy, LT, Notre Dame

Although this is a no-trade mock, if the Bears do indeed end up with the no. 1 overall pick, they should be expected to trade down with a team targeting a QB, which would offset the picks lost when they traded up to draft Mitchell Trubisky in 2017. With their investment in Trubisky, the Bears must now protect his blind side with someone more capable of doing it than Charles Leno Jr.

2. MIAMI DOLPHINS: Arden Key, DE, LSU

Miami’s pass rush already needs improvement and the Phins are also facing the potential retirement of Cameron Wake.

3. NEW YORK JETS: Sam Darnold, QB, USC

The Jets have been doing a good job of sucking for Sam and here they make it pay off. Some of Darnold’s critics think he’d be better off returning to the Trojans in 2018. Going back for another year didn’t work out so well for Matt Barkley, and Darnold won’t be able to resist the temptation of the big payday in store for him.

4. SAN FRANCISCO 49ers: Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn St.

SF’s first pick has so much to do with what it may be able to do at QB during the offseason. There’s the possibility that they sign Kirk Cousins. There will also be other veteran QB options, plus they have the draft capital to trade back into Round 1. Carlos Hyde is destined for free agency, and Barkley coupled with a capable signal-caller could be franchise-changing.

5. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: Derwin James, SS, Florida St.

It would be stunning if the Pats really ended up picking in the top 5, but at present that is where they are. Derwin James would be a significant upgrade over the aging Pat Chung.

6. CLEVELAND BROWNS: James Washington, WR, Oklahoma St.

This pick depends on whether Deshone Kizer earns the chance remain Cleveland’s starter in 2018. If he does, he’s going to need some more ammunition.

7. TENNESSEE TITANS: Minkah Fitzpatrick, FS, Alabama

After signing Logan Ryan and drafting Adoree’ Jackson, the Titans could bolster their secondary further by selecting the versatile Fitzpatrick, who can play anywhere in it.

8. BUFFALO (from Kansas City): Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M

Although they acquired Jordan Matthews, the Bills diminished their receiving corps by letting go of Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins and they need to re-stock their receiving corps. In addition to being a playmaker at wideout, Kirk is an electrifying return specialist.

9. DETROIT: Derrius Guice. RB, LSU

Theo Riddick doesn’t have the stature to be an ever-down back and Ameer Abdullah has failed to launch, meaning the Leos still need a bell cow back. Guice gets the nod over 195-lb. Bryce Love, who is an amped-up version of Riddick, and San Diego St.’s Rashaad Penny, who hasn’t generated his numbers playing against SEC defenses.

10. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: Martinas Rankin, OT, Mississippi St.

Seattle having a top ten pick would only hammer home the imperative that its first pick of 2018 must be an offensive lineman. Prior to his September knee injury, Connor Williams of Texas may have been penciled in here, but it remains to be seen how that injury impacts Williams’ decision to enter the draft as well as his stock.

11. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma St.

Whether Drew Brees retires after this season or not, the Saints need to get his successor in place ASAP.

12. CINCINNATI BENGALS: Orlando Brown Jr., OT, Oklahoma

The loss of Andrew Whitworth is one reason the Bungles are struggling this season and they need to address that after failing to adequately do so in 2017.

13. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: Tarvarus McFadden, CB, Florida St.

Brent Grimes is likely to retire after this season and Vernon Hargreaves is now looking like he will not develop into a top-tier corner.

14. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: Harold Landry, OLB, Boston College

The Colts don’t generate much of a pass rush and Landry, who has room to add bulk to his 6'-3“ frame, would be a steal at 14.

15. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: Connor Williams, OT, Texas

Minny’s o-line is a patchwork outfit and if Teddy Bridgewater is to have any longevity after his eventual return, he’s going to need to be well-protected.

16. CLEVELAND BROWNS (from Houston Texans): Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego St.

Isaiah Crowell will be playing elsewhere in 2018. If the Browns are not confident in handing over the no. 1 spit to Storm Johnson Jr. and they do not address the loss via free agency, they will need to revamp the backfield through the draft.

17. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS: Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA

By keeping Rosen in LA, the Bolts could bolster attendance in their new abode once he succeeds Philip Rivers. Being mentored by Rivers may help Rosen, who is not popular with his Bruin teammates, develop some maturity. The Chargers however, would likely have to move up from 17 to nab him. In a scenario where trades are involved, he’s not likely to be on the board at 17.

18. NEW YORK GIANTS: Mitch Hyatt, OT, Clemson

Ereck Flowers is a disaster and the G-Men have yet to have been able to re-sign Justin Pugh and Weston Richburg.

19. WASHINGTON REDSKINS: Luke Falk, QB, Washington St.

This pick presumes that the Redskins and Kirk Cousins will part ways following the 2017 season. Wazzu’s system may help Falk’s numbers, but he’s very accurate, he has a prototypical frame, and he out-played Sam Darnold in the Cougars’ 30-27 upset of USC. After that game 5 NFL executives were asked to compare Falk to NFL QB’s, and one of them answered Cousins.

20. DENVER: Deon Cain, WR, Clemson

The Broncos’ receiving corps beyond Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders (both of whom may be past their prime) is a barren wasteland.

21. BUFFALO BILLS: Cameron Smith, MLB, USC

It still seems unlikely that the Bills would win the AFC east and that their own first round pick would be somewhere lower than 20, but they are the current leaders of the AFC Least. Buffalo’s Mike position took a hit with the free agency loss of Zach Brown, and now the head man in upstate New York, Sean McDermott could use a new Luke Kuechly. The comparison may be generous, but Cam Smith is a baller.

22. ARIZONA CARDINALS: Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming

Even if this is not Carson Palmer’s final season, the Cards need to get his heir apparent onto the roster. While Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield are still available and Allen’s stock has dropped after his struggles versus tougher competition, Bruce Arians prefers a big-bodied, rocket-armed QB. The scouts who have been less harsh on Allen this fall have noted that his supporting cast has been diminished by graduation and Wyoming is not nearly as good a team as it was a year ago, which has hampered Allen. The tools all seem to be there, but he still needs to learn pro reads and take fewer risks, lessons which he can be taught by Arians and his staff. If Palmer sticks around a year or two more, Allen would be in an outstanding learning environment.

23. LOS ANGELES RAMS: Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. St.

Dominique Easley is not likely to be brought back after a full season on IR, and Ethan Westbrooks was caught in possession of a stolen handgun. Ends in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 are not space-eating hefties, they’re supposed to get after the QB as do J.J. Watt and Aaron Donald.

24. GREEN BAY PACKERS: Martez Ivey, G, Florida

In successive offseasons, T.J. Lang and Josh Sitton have departed the Frozen Tundra.

25. BALTIMORE RAVENS: Royce Freeman, RB, Oregon

As Joe Flacco declines, a solid running game is going to become increasingly important to the Ravens, and they need a durable bell cow.

26. OAKLAND RAIDERS: Christian Wilkins, DT, Clemson

The Raiders still need help at several defensive positions, and Wilkins is the best defensive player available.

27. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

The Jags got a very good Blake Bortles for the first four weeks of the season, but he has since reverted to his hair-pulling version. That inconsistency demonstrates that the Jaguars should not try to rely on him for the long term. Some knock Mayfield’s size, but the myth that under-sized signal-callers cannot succeed in the NFL has been debunked; he’s deadly accurate and his intangibles are through the roof. He will, however, need to convince NFL executives that his offseason brush with the law was an aberration.

28. ATLANTA FALCONS: Tyquan Lewis, DE, Ohio St.

There’s not much to not like about the defending NFC champs, but they could use some help on the edge.

29. DALLAS COWBOYS: Malik Jefferson, OLB, Texas

Injury-prone Sean Lee will turn 32 during 2018 training camp and the torch needs to be passed sooner rather than later.

30. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: Jerome Baker, OLB, Ohio St.

Mychal Kendricks has been a poor fit for DC Jim Schwartz’s scheme.

31. PITTSBURGH STEELERS: Vita Vea, NT, Washington

As the best nose tackle in the class, Vea would solidify the Steelers’ front 3.

32. CAROLINA PANTHERS: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama

Kelvin Benjamin is a standout but he heads an otherwise meh group.

Game Notes
This game should come down to which Blake Bortles the Jags get. Good Bortles could shred Indy's weak defense, but Bad Bortles could cost J-Town the game. Indy is down to one healthy running back from the opening day roster and is only two-deep in the backfield with recent signee Stepfan Taylor playing behind Robert Turbin. Pressuring Jacoby Brissett could make it a long day for the Ponies. Leonard's Loser: Indianapolis

Re: Leonard's Losers

Indy's Defensive TD Leads To Jags' Third Straight Loss

With adequate ball security, the Jacksonville Jaguars could well be 7-0. Instead, the Jags have slumped to 4-3, and a turnover is once again to blame. With the Jaguars deep in Indianapolis territory and trailing the Colts 13-10, Leonard Fournette’s first NFL fumble was returned 86 yards for a touchdown by inside linebacker Antonio Morrison, who also jarred the ball loose. The turnover marred Fournette’s 106-yard performance and was a blow from which the Jaguars were unable to recover in the 26-23 loss despite being statistically dominant yet again. Also contributing to the defeat was the absence of A.J. Bouye and an erratic Blake Bortles, who has thrown at least one pick in each of Jacksonville’s losses. Bortles only completed 54% of his 48 pass attempts and had several drive-killing misfires, causing the team to have to settle for a pair of field goals in the late stages of the first half. Bouye left the game early in the first quarter and with him out of action four Indy receivers had catches of over 20 yards. With the team going into a bye week, Bouye is expected to be 100% for the Week 9 contest vs. the Bengals. Allen Hurns (elbow), however, is not expected to see the field again until Week 10, when the Jags host the Chargers.

With the loss giving Indy a tiebreaker advantage, the Jags have also surrendered the AFC South lead to the Colts.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

THE FAB 5, WEEK 7

1. ATLANTA FALCONS (5-1)

Avenged their loss to the Pats, but beating New England isn’t so special this year.

Falcons two weeks away, but can overlook the Bucs this week.

3. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (6-1)

Survived their first Wentz-less test.

4. DALLAS COWBOYS (5-1)

The backfield is even thinner now, and this emperor has no clothes.

5. GREEN BAY PACKERS (5-2)

This season’s first two-loss entry into the field.

Failed Two Point Try Dooms Bucs

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trailing the Buffalo Bills 21-13, Jameis Winston hit rookie tight end O.J. Howard for a 2 yard TD with 28 seconds to go, but Doug Martin was stopped at the 1 on the try for two that would have tied the game and most likely sent it to overtime. Winston was picked off 3 times in the game.

Walsh Boot Keeps Seahawks Out Of OT vs. G-Men

A 7 yard TD pass from Eli Manning to Brandon Marshall tied this week’s Seahawks-Giants game at 20 with 3:04 to go, but Seattle was able to prevent overtime by reaching the New York 5 before settling for a 22 yard game-winning field goal by Blair Walsh.
