CLEVELAND, OH - Things could not have started better for the Jets, who tipped and intercepting Kizer on the first offensive snap. Two runs later they found themselves on the three yard line with two chances to score. An incomplete pass on second down gave them one last chance to score a touchdown. Instead, McCown threw it right into the hands of Emmanuel Ogbah, who dropped into coverage from his DL position. Ogbah took the ball down the middle of the field untouched for a touchdown. For a game that started off so well for the Jets it sure took a quick turn for the worst.

The Jets would drive down the field on their next possession but would settle for a redzone field goal. The defense would force Cleveland to punt on their next drive, a heck of a punt that pinned the Jets inside the 1-yard line. One play later the Jets gave up a safety on a botched full back dive, setting up what looked like another uneven Jets performance. However, this would all change in the 2nd quarter.

E. McGuire broke a hundred yards rushing, the Jets defense surrendered no points, and the Jets scoured three touchdowns, all in the 2nd. This wasn’t the same NY Jets squad we’ve come to know over the first four games. They played efficient, confident, and most surprising of all they weren't making the mental errors that plagued their season so far. No dropped passes, no missed blocks, an O-line that held up, it was almost too good to be true.

The Jets continued to roll on offense and came away with their first win of the year. Rookie HB E. McGuire had the best day of his young career, running for 203 yards on 31 carries and punching in 3 scores. Unfortunately, he also put the ball on the ground three times, with one being recovered by the defense. This led to a benching late in the 4th. He’ll be on a short leash next week and perhaps may even lose his starting role if he isn’t too careful with the football.

The Jets have to feel good about this win, even if it is over the now 1-4 Browns. The offensive line seems to be coming together, finally, and the defense his put together back-to-back solid performances. No time to rest though, as the Jets return home Week 6 to battle the 4-1 Patriots.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Jets (1-4) returned home to face their AFC East division rivals, the Patriots (4-1), in a matchup between the 31st and 1st ranked offenses. The ageless Tom Brady entered the matchup having thrown for 1,470 yards with a 19:3 TD/INT ratio over the first five games. In comparison, Josh McCown of the Jets has thrown for only 853 yards with a 4:3 ratio in as many games. The Jets defense surely had their work cut out for them.

The Jets defense came out strong, forcing a punt on New Englands opening drive, followed by an interception on the second. Containing the Patriots to only two first half scores was a bit of a victory for Jets, as they were able to keep the game within reach entering half time. A trio of Cantanzaro field goals, including a 53-yard kick that need a lucky bounce off the crossbar, had the Jets trailing 14-9 after two quarters.

The Jets went three-and-out on their first two drives of the second half, while the Patriots scored on both. The running lanes McGuire took advantage earlier in the game were closed down and the Patriot pass defense tightened up once they begun to shut down the running game, especially after B. Powell left the game early with a back injury.

New York was able to put together a long drive that extended into the 4th quarter, leaning heavily on their rookie tailback. Unfortunately the 13-play drive would end in a redzone field goal, after a couple of McCown passes fell incomplete in the end zone. The defense was able to force a punt, but the offense went three-and-out the following drive. Once again the defense forced a punt and the Jets offense, trailing 24-12, drove down the field with about 4 minutes remaining. At the Patriots 6-yard line rookie TE Jordan Leggett took a dump off and dove for the pylon and fumbled on the 1-yard line! The Patriots recovered and were able to convert a couple first downs and ice the game.

The Jets drop to 1-5 on the season, but overall have to be happy with the recent play of their defense. If the offense can do a better job at finishing drives they may have a chance to notch a win or two more this year.

Next week the Jets will travel down to Miami for another divisional matchup and take on the Dolphins who have QB Jay Cutler returning from a minor injury. Cutler was absent from their first meeting, athough his presents wasn't missed as Jay Ajayi torched the Jets for over 240 yards rushing. With Matt Moore performing well as Cutler's replacement it will be interesting to see who Miami chooses to start under center.

Re: The Lombardi Pursuit: A M18 Career Dynasty

Around The NFL - Week 7 Edition

NFL.COM - The contenders and pretenders are starting to show their colors as we entered Week 7 of the 2017 NFL season. No team has survived undefeated to this point but there still is a winless team. Surprisingly it's not the Jets, Browns, or Bears, but the Cincinnati Bengals.

Injuries are not the reason for their poor performance, they actually have one of the healthier teams in the league. A dreadful offense is to blame, as they have only scored a league-low 77 points. Coach Marvin Lewis needs to turn it around fast or he'll be looking for a job this offseason.

Two additional playoff hopefuls, the Cardinals and the Saints, have fallen flat out of the gate. With injuries to premier players, including HB David Johnson and HB Adrian Peterson, both teams may have fallen too far back to make a playoff push.

Here's a look at the rest of the standings:

MIAMI GARDENS, FL - The Jets battled the Dolphins on a rain-soaked Hard Rock Stadium field down in Miami. The Dolphins took an early lead thanks to a fumble by McGuire. The rookie committed his 5th fumble of the season and was quickly shown the bench in favor of Powell. New York’s offense struggled in the first, it wasn’t until the second quarter that they gained a first down. Early in the second Josh McCown made a key 3rd-down throw to help keep their third drive alive, which ended in a field goal. Miami would score again and enter halftime up 17-3.

New York began the second half much like the first, with a turnover. This time Josh McCown found Byron Maxwell on a deep out route. Unfortunately, Maxwell plays for Miami. The Jets defense was able to force a put, and on the next drive the offense drove down the field and had a potential touchdown slip through the fingers of Robby Anderson, who recently returned to action for the first time in weeks. They would settle for a field goal and watch as Miami drove down for one of their own.

Another Jets drive ended with a field goal attempt, this time Catanzaro pushed his attempted wide right, his first miss of the season. New York would force a punt and pinned deep Josh McCown threw his second interception of the afternoon, ending a dreadful 3rd quarter. Starting the 4th off in the redzone Miami took an easy 7 points. The Jets answered with a touchdown of their own, a deep shot to Robby Anderson to not only score but convert only their second 3rd-down of the day.

Jay Cutler threw an interception to Marcus Williams on Miami’s next play, setting up the Jets with a first and goal from Miami’s 10 yard line. Three plays later McCown hit Anderson again, this time on a beautiful toe tapping catch in the corner of the end zone, bring the score to 27-20. The Jets forced another punt and took over at their own 24-yard line with 7 minutes to go in the game. A holding penalty on third-and-short would kill the Jets drive.

On the ensuing punt Jarvis Landry broke a few tackles and returned it 27 yards, putting the Dolphins in excellent field position. They would score and put the game out of reach. Dolphins win 34-20 and complete their sweep of the Jets. Overall it was another disappointing outing by the Jets offense. Once again struggling to convert third downs. However, seeing Robby Anderson return to the field and provide a deep threat is an encouraging sight. New York will need Anderson's deep threat potential to help open up the running game. '

The Jets return home for Week 8. They face the defending NFC Champ Falcons, who are struggling this year and currently sit 2-4. Perhaps New York can take advantage of floundering Atlanta team and score their second win of the year.

Roster Moves - Week 8

  • LG Ethan Cooper released from Practice Squad
  • TE Scott Orndoff demoted to Practice Squad
  • HB Matt Forte remains on Injury Reserve, pending return Week 9
  • WR Robby Anderson to starting lineup
  • HB Bilal Powell replaces Elijah McGuire as starting RB

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - New York hosted the struggling 2-4 Falcons in a matchup between two teams in the cellars of their own divisions. Both would go 3-and-out to start the game, on the Falcons second drive they would score the first points of the game. Bilal Powell would fumble the following drive, but Atlanta could not capitalize on the turnover.

The Jets put together a scoring drive to start the second. Rookie WR Chad Hansen was the key player of the drive, hauling in three catches, including the touchdown score. Atlanta quickly answered with a score of their own. Not to be outdone, New York marched back downfield highlighted by a 42 yard diving catch from Robby Anderson. Anderson would drop a 3rd down pass in the end zone and the Jets would settle for a 25-yard field goal.

The Jets would get the ball right back thanks to a Juston Burris interception, giving them great field position at Atlanta’s 25-yard line. New York would score on a 1-yard run by McGuire, but would miss the extra point try. With 1:02 left the clock the Falcons marched down field and kicked a field goal as time expired to make it a 17-16 game at halftime.

Three-and-out, interception, fumble. Those were the results of the Jets three possessions in the 3rd quarter, no surprise they trailed 26-16 early in the 4th. New York’s offense came back alive and scored an early field goal to make it a 26-19 game. After an Atlanta punt, the Jets put together a long, time-killing drive that scored what appeared to be the tying touchdown. Well, the touchdown was good, the extra point was not. Catanzaro missed his second PAT of the game and the Jets fell one point short, Falcons win 26-25.

A tough way to end the game, New York can at least feel good about its passing performance. Chad Hansen had a breakout game, catching 8 passes for 158 yards and a score. Robby Anderson put together another solid day, minus a fumble, and McCown looked comfortable in the pocket for the first time in weeks.

However, now sitting at 1-7 on the season, the Jets might need to see what they have in Petty and Hackenberg. McCown has been solid, but at 38 years old he isn’t the future of the Jets. It may be time to see if either Petty or Hackenberg are.

2018 Mock Draft

CBSSPORTS.COM
- It's never too early to look ahead to the next draft, with half of the 2017 season in the books let's take a look at how the 2018 draft could potentially shake down. Four QBs may be taken in the first ten picks, a large factor being that each of these teams may have a new head coach. And what coach doesn't want to bring in 'their guys'?

Surprisingly, the Bengals are still winless this season. Could Andy 'Red Rifle' Dalton's job be in jeopardy? You have to expect the Jets to take a QB, given their situation. The Cardinals and Saints, both struggling, could be drafting towards the future. How will the draft play out? No one can say for sure, but here is our take on it:

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Jets didn’t have much time to mull their Week 8 loss, they hosted Thursday Night Football, facing the 5-2 Bills on a short week. Matt Forte made his return and found himself getting a heavy dose of touches early when starting HB Elijah McGuire left the first series with a minor injury. This was also the debut of Jermaine Kearse, who the Jets acquired at the trade line from Seattle, swapping Kearse for DL Sheldon Richardson. Kearse made his presents known early in the second when he took a 3rd-down pass from Josh McCown 62 yards for New York’s second touchdown of the game, giving the Jets a 13-7 lead.

Matt Forte scored his first touchdown of the year, capping off a drive highlighted by a couple big passing games thanks to Kearse. The Jets forced turnover the next drive and settled for a long field goal, extending their lead to 23-7. New York forced another punt with just over a minute to go in the half and put together another stellar drive capped off by Kearse’s second touchdown catch of the day with 0:24 to go.

It was the Jets offense’s most complete first-half performance of the season, McCown tallied 273 yards passing and three scores, 148 yards and two of the touchdowns thanks to Kearse. They took a 29-10 lead into halftime and looked to hold on for their second win of the year.

Ground and pound was the theme of the second half. The Jets ran ran ran the ball and kept the ball out of Buffalo’s hands during the 3rd quarter, adding two field goals to their lead and forcing the Bills to punt each time. Tyrod Taylor would find a running lane early in the 4th and scored on a 66-yard run. The Jets immediately responded when McGuire broke a tackle and took it 75 yards to make it a 42-16 game. LeSean McCoy scored on the Bills next possession to make the score 42-23.

New York was able to move into Buffalo territory on their next drive, a direct result of a 3rd down pass interference call. Three plays later Jermaine Kearse caught his third touchdown of the game. The scoring didn’t stop there, the Bills would score on back-to-back drives, cutting the Jets lead down to 48-37. New York’s defense wouldn’t surrender any more points and the Jets held on to win their second game of the season!

Clearly the shortened week favored the offenses, 85 points were scored between both units. Buffalo had entered the game with the 5th ranked defense, yet gave up nearly 50 points to the Jets’ 30th ranked offense. The addition of Kearse and return of Forte was the spark the Jets’ offense needed.

Next week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be key for Josh McCown. Win and he could solidify his starting status the rest of the year. Loss, and thus dropping to 2-8, could see a QB change after the Jets’ Week 11 bye, as any playoff dreams will be over.
