UMass Released Coaches' Salaries, Contract Details
Head Coach Ivin Jasper and his coaching staff are approaching their first game at UMass. The team kicks off the 2018 season against Virginia. Opening the year with back-to-back road games is difficult, but Jasper is confident in his coaching staff.
One of the biggest changes for Jasper is moving out of the booth and onto the field for gameday. Mike Judge, who usually sat next to Jasper during their days at Navy, will now man the offensive coaches booth. He will be flanked by Lou Conte, taking over the role Judge had once played for Jasper.
"The last two weeks of fall practice, the entire staff has tried to simulate game situations. We want to feel comfortable with where we are on the field... how we will handle certain situations."
Heading into the season, UMass will have both coordinators (Mike Judge and Paul Haynes) in the booth. They will each be flanked by coaches that have previously served as coordinators: Lou Conte for the offense and Ben Needham for the defense.
Contract information for the staff had not been previously released. Yet with the new school year approaching, the University made salary information available for every employee. That includes the Athletic Department, which has some of the highest paid state employees in Massachusetts.
The football coaching staff had their total salary bump up to $1.5 million. That increase is more than $250 thousand more than the previous staff. In total, the coaching staff's base salary for 2018-19 is $1,464,000 including Ivin Jasper's yearly salary.
Coach Jasper signed a five-year contract that puts his base salary from the University at $505,000. That means an increase from Mark Whipple's previous salary ($468,000). Men's basketball coach Matt McCall is the highest paid individual on the University payroll at $750,000. UMass remains one of the few FBS programs in which the football coach makes less than the basketball coach.
Notable on the staff salaries: Next season, if members of the football staff return -- they will receive an increase in their base salary by $4,000. That will take the total in coach salaries up to $1.5 million exactly.
Here are the salaries for the football coaching staff for the upcoming season: I. Jasper - $505,000 | P. Haynes - $215,000 | L. Owens - $193,000 | M. Judge - $142,000 | B. Needham - $87,000 | H. Poteat - $75,000 | L. Conte - $71,000 | C. Hopkins - $65,000 | L. Black - $59,000 | B. Debartola - $52,000
love the authenticity in this. never really see dynasties here dig so deep into the realities of CFB. keep it up, you’ve got me rooting for UMASS and coach Jasper!

Thank you! I always had respect for dynasties that try to stay realistic. By adding some additional storylines, I hope I'm doing that. I'm always interested in the coaching carousel and I want to make that a big part of this dynasty. But trying to keep it realistic at the same time.

Not a bad first showing on the road against a Power-5 team. Are you running the triple-option right away or slowly transitioning to it? If you are, I would have expected to see a more diversified rushing attack though Marquis Young is by far their best back.

Yeah, we really settled down in the second half. I had no idea how to stop the passing game on Virginia's first five drives. But I figured it out, I don't have a lot of experience with the 4-2-5. It's definitely a transition, I think I will attempt more passes than a normal triple option team. I would expect that the QB and top running back will get the majority of the carries. Similar to how it has been the last few years at Navy.
