Re: The Coaching Career of Jeremy Pratt (NCAA 2014)

Special Teams, Defense Lead UTEP Through the Battle of I-10

Las Cruces, NM -- Redshirt Junior Jordan Leslie has quickly become a jack of all trades for the UTEP Miners, as he had over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns returning kicks in the Miners 35-16 win over the New Mexico State Aggies. In fact, the only action that Leslie saw on the field during today's game came from his special teams stint, as the offense was overall lackluster.

Junior QB Jameill Showers struggled, despite completing 11 passes on 19 attempts, for 155 yards and a touchdown. Showers also threw 3 interceptions, as well as a fumble when he was forced to scramble. Luckily, he had the special teams and defense to bail him out.

"Their (NMSU) defense was able to confuse us at times, showing one coverage while actually running another" said Coach Pratt after the game. "That being said, I think that our team excels as picking eachother up when one stumbles. Jameill struggled early, and we were able to protect him by running the ball, scoring on special teams, and holding the opposing defense to 3 field goals until the end of the game. Eventually, he got his chemistry back."

The special teams and defense definitely carried the Miners to their second win of the season. The NMSU offense was held to a field goal after recovering a Showers fumble on UTEP's 20, and the following kickoff was returned 103 yards for a touchdown. In the following quarter, another post fieldgoal kickoff was returned for a 105 yard touchdown. The score was 21-6 UTEP going into the second half, and the offense was able to settle down and get comfortable.

The second half told the same story as last week, as the offense cruised and the defense kept their foot in the ground. Miners running back Nathan Jeffery was able to excel, with 2 rushing touchdowns. This was inpart thanks to an offensive line that was simply overpowering the dline, with sophmore right tackle Mike Amdall had a whopping 10 pancakes!

Coach Jeremy Pratt has the Miners on a course that could lead to their first conference championship since 2000, sitting at 2-0, as they host UTSA next week, the Miners' homecoming.

This is UTEP's homecoming, against a team that is 1-2 in UTSA, but have had a close game with #16 Oklahoma State, then blown out against 3-0 Arizona. Kirk has UTEP starting the season at 1-0 in the conference, and so do we. Final prediction: UTEP 21 - UTSA 17

Re: The Coaching Career of Jeremy Pratt (NCAA 2014)

Miners Fail to Strike Gold at Homecoming, Lose Conference Opener

El Paso, TX -- The UTEP Miners failed to defeat their rivals from San Antonio, falling to the UTSA Roadrunners 24-13. The Miners struggled offensively, only gaining 212 yards.

"It's frustrating when you see an offense that can be explosive in previous weeks, and then fail to get much done, especially on homecoming, sure." said Coach Pratt. "We just need to look at what went wrong, and make those corrections for next weekend."

One of the glaring issues on the offense was that it looked at times that Jameill Showers lost trust in his offensive line. Being sacked 6 times during the game, Showers had checked down multiple times, rather than waiting for the play to develop. He also did not extend plays with his feet, netting 0 rushing yards. Showers completed 17 passes on 28 attempts, good for 60%, but only had 176 yards and one touchdown.

The rushing game could not generate anything either, with Junior Nathan Jeffery averaging 3.6 yards per carry with 47 yards on 13 attempts.

UTSA took an early 14-0 lead, with two runs up the middle for touchdowns in the first quarter. The UTEP offense was extremely sluggish, mustering up a field goal halfway through the second quarter as their only points of the half.

UTEP continued to struggle to get any momentum as UTSA came out and scored on the ground for the third time this game, extending their lead to 21-3. UTEP tried to battle back, but a late UTSA fieldgoal closed the door on any late game UTEP heroics.

Re: The Coaching Career of Jeremy Pratt (NCAA 2014)

UTEP Gain 3 Commits To Kick Off First Jeremy Pratt Recruiting Class

El Paso, TX -- UTEP looks to strengthen their defense as they get 3 hard commits from high school seniors who spent the weekend visiting the college. The blew scouting reports show more on these commits:

DE Wesley Poland | Oak Hills Place, LA | ** | -- Wesley is a 2 star prospect out of Louisiana who many believe will be able to see the field as early as next year as he enters the UTEP program. Sitting at 6'3", 245lbs, Poland has above average speed, and showed signs of + athleticism for a guy his size. He is one of the better pass rushers that showed interest in UTEP. With 2 defensive ends graduating after the 2013 season, Poland will definitely have a chance to prove his case to avoid redshirting.

DT Jason Parker | Channelview, TX | ** | -- Jason Parker is another 2 star prospect that was recruited to increase the depth on the D-Line. Sitting at 6 foot flat, weighing 261 pounds, Parker will almost definitely see playing time next year, as their are 3 defensive tackles graduating, and only 2 freshman waiting to fill in the ranks.

OLB Jon Jones | Keller, TX | * | -- Despite being listed as only 1 star, Jones has a lot of upside, especially the fact that due to his size, listed at 6'0", 209lbs, he may transition very well into a strong safety type of role. Jones has shown ability to shed his blocks, and has above average speed for a linebacker. One of his more appealing talents is that Jones takes pride in being able to lay the boom on offensive players.

Game Notes
Sep 28, 2013 | The UTEP Miners are looking to rebound after last weeks home loss as they head up to a very weak Colorado State team. CSU's offense is averaging only 15.7 points a game, which will be going up against a very strong UTEP defense. On top of that, CSU QB Garrett Grayson will be a game time decision. CSU's defense is in the lower 10 of the country, allowing 438.3 yards per game. Look for UTSA to come out with something to prove after last week's debacle, and they take it out on poor CSU. Kirk agrees. Final prediction: UTEP 35 - CSU 14

Re: The Coaching Career of Jeremy Pratt (NCAA 2014)

Costly UTEP Turnovers Lead to Rams Walk Off Win

Fort Collins, CO -- The Miners were upset on the road against the Colorado State Rams, who picked up their first win on the year due to a 45-42 shootout victory.

The Miners struggled to protect the football, with Quarterback Jameill Showers turning the ball over 3 times, 2 in the air, and one on the ground. Showers did complete 24 passes for 277 yards and 4 touchdowns. Unfortunately, Colorado States quarterback Garrett Grayson was a force of his own, throwing for 1 TD and rushing for 3 more.

The Miners failed to stop the run today as the Rams managed to rush for over 200 yards and 4 touchdowns. Senior Ram Chris Nwoke rushed for 140 yards on 22 carries, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

"It's hard to win football games when you can't stop the run."said UTEP Coach Pratt. "It forces you to move guys into the box, and when that happens, the quarterback dumps it right over your heads. Colorado State did a hell of a job executing that today."

The Miners would strike first with a 3 yard rushing touchdown from Junior back Josh Bell. The Rams would answer almost immediately, with Grayson running into the endzone untouched as the first quarter came to a close.

The UTEP and Col St. QB's would battle for offensive supremacy in the 2nd quarter as well, as Showers found tight end Craig Wenrick for a pair of touchdowns, and Colorado State Grayson would run for a pair of his own, including a 60 yard QB draw. The Miners would kick a field goal to go up 24-21 at the half.

The Rams came out blazing in the 3rd quarter however, stunning the Miners, scoring 21 straight points while holding UTEP to 0. One of the scores was a pick six thanks to an errant throw from Jameill Showers.

The game was somehow not over yet though as in the 4th, the Miners made their comback. Jameill Showers hooked up with Junior Devin Patterson for a 51 yard fieldgoal. Showers made his final mistake of the game as he threw an interception that was fallen on on the Rams 1 yard line. The defense stood up however, and tackled the Rams running back in the endzone for a safety. Showers would recover and find another tight end, Senior Kevin Perry to tie the game at 42 with 1:30 left.

The Rams managed to spoil the UTEP comeback however as they marched right down the field, kicking a 25 yard field goal as time expired, solidifying their 45-42 victory.
