Yep! He lost the starting job to Justin Worley originally, and then once Worley went down with an injury in Peterman's sophomore season, he lost the job to Josh Dobbs, who held it for the rest of his time at UT. Peterman, of course, ended up transferring to Pittsburgh eventually, and ended up playing well enough to get a job in the NFL, so I guess it worked out okay for him.

Volunteers Underwhelm in Gruden's Debut, Defeat Austin Peay 28-7

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Tennessee Volunteers (1-0) opened up the Jon Gruden era this afternoon with a 28-7 victory over the Austin Peay Governors.

Today's game was never really in doubt as Austin Peay was clearly overwhelmed in all facets of the game, but the Governors (0-1) still kept it close and didn't allow the Volunteers to get their backups as many reps as they might have liked in the second half.

The Governors actually cut the lead to 14-7 late in the second quarter, but the Volunteers followed up with a 40-second touchdown drive that saw redshirt freshman quarterback Nathan Peterman find Jason Croom for his first career touchdown pass.

The Volunteers followed up that touchdown with another touchdown late in the third quarter for their final score of the game to claim a 28-7 victory.

Peterman, who beat out junior Justin Worley for the starting quarterback position in fall camp, played an efficient game, throwing for 196 yards and a touchdown while completing 20/32 passes. Rajion Neal was the real star for the Volunteers, though. He carried the football 23 times for 176 yards and three touchdowns.

The Tennessee defense really locked down aside from Austin Peay's one touchdown drive. The Governors had just 185 yards of total offense this afternoon while Tennessee reached 411 yards.

Neal Carries Tennessee to Another Victory

KNOXVILLE, TN - Rajion Neal rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries and also caught three passes for 29 yards to lead the Tennessee Volunteers (2-0) to their second victory of the season in as many games with a 31-17 victory over Western Kentucky (0-2)

The Volunteers dominated the game and outgained the Hilltoppers 418-231. The Volunteers got out to an early 17-0 lead and led 24-7 at the half. A 50-yard pick-six for the Hilltoppers in the third quarter made things interesting with the Volunteers' lead cut to seven points, but Tennessee held on for the victory. Rajion Neal paced the UT offense on the ground in the closing minutes, capping it off with a touchdown in the final minute to put the game away and hand Tennessee the 31-17 victory.

Nathan Peterman threw for 224 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also rushed for 30 yards. His pick-six in the third quarter was costly, though, and made today's game a lot tighter than it otherwise would have been. Marquez North was his top target with 85 yards receiving on seven receptions. Jason Croom caught both of Peterman's touchdown passes and ended with just two receptions for 21 yards

The Volunteers' defense held Western Kentucky Brandon Doughty to just 144 yards passing and two interceptions. Antonio Andrews (14 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown) had some success for the Hilltoppers on the ground, but it ultimately wasn't enough to boost the Western Kentucky offense that scored just 10 offensive points today.

Tennessee faces their first big opponent of the season next week as they will travel to Autzen, Oregon to take on the #3 Oregon Ducks.
