georgia tech reclaims city ownership in cathedral blowout

by: beast10 — cfb week 10

georgia tech was dialed in on revenge saturday following cathedral’s 50-14 victory last year at bobby dodd stadium.

the yellow jackets, ranked atop of the nation this time around, defeated no. 20 cathedral 42-17 saturday at father dalmoro stadium. they extended their record to 7-1 over the spartans.

head coach bo pelini’s cathedral team struggled as georgia tech’s defense, and offense proved to be too much.

frankie abbot tossed three interceptions and a season-low 176 yards in the loss. his receivers were for the most part shadowed all game by the GT secondary. only aiyden holliday finished with over 25 yards receiving, impressively tallying eight receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.

UC’s offense had 300 yards in total.

cameron blackshear, making his first career start, rushed for 111 yards on 24 carries. previous starter, akeem houston, scored once on the ground.

“it’s a reasonable gut check,” pelini said. “our win last year of course may overshadow the fact that we just played the top team in the country. regardless, i loved the fiery tonight. our guys embraced this challenge.”

georgia tech had a stellar performance from its quarterback willie holmes, who completed 10-of-11 passes for 188 yards, a score, while adding a trio of rushing score and 112 yards.

“this game had been circled since we first hung up the schedule,” said holmes, who started last season as a true freshman. “they put an arrow on their chest. this one was our statement.”

running backs marcus blankenship and najeem griffin (PICTURED) both scored once while rushing for 65 and 54 yards, respectively. senior receiver eric kirkpatrick hauled in six passes for 107 yards.

wisniewski, holliday up for hardware

by: beast10 — cfb week 11

nicky wisniewski managed to remain a coaching favorite even past the hiring of an entirely new staff. meanwhile, aiyden holliday, a transfer from florida state, is having one of the best college debut seasons in recent history.

both cathedral standouts were named semifinalist for multiple national cfb awards, committees announced monday.

wisniewski, a first year starter at outside linebacker, was named a headliner for the bednarik and butkus award, honoring the top defensive player and linebacker, respectively. the junior has recorded 56 total tackles this season, 18 coming for loss, including an ACC high of nine sacks. the boynton beach, florida native, in addition, has forced two fumbles, recovering one.

“a very well deserving athlete,” head coach bo pelini said in a statement. “nicky has got everything you want in a linebacker. just a complete dog. he wants to make every play.”

holliday is featured on the list for the biletnikoff, acknowledging the nation’s top receiver. the redshirt sophomore is up to 58 receptions for 1,067 yards receiving in his first cfb season. the georgia native has scored 10 times through the air while totaling 81 yards rushing on 13 carries.

note: we played his former team, florida state, and he got absolutely shut down .. which was a cool storyline. been lights out against every other team.

“holliday has given our offense a huge spark this year,” pelini said. “he’s our playmaker. we want to give him the ball as often as possible. we know we can depend on him to make things happen.”

cathedral defense rules virginia in 34-21 rout

by: beast10 — cfb week 11

the no. 25 ranked cathedral spartans bounced back from a tough rivalry loss saturday with a 34–21 throttling over virginia (5-4).

defense was most impressive in the win, holding the cavaliers to just 200 yards of offense — the least amount allowed all season. the unit had six sacks in total, led by linebacker nicky wisniewski’s pair, making for 11 on the year for the nargruski finalist.

“we were emotional,” wisniewski said. “last week did it’s damage on us. we couldn’t leave any doubt on the field today.”

picks were added by corner tijani mcbride and linebacker elcee ballard. safety r.j. parrish returned a fumble 39 yards for cathedral’s opening touchdown.

the spartans, now 6-4, are bowl eligible for the second straight season.

offense, which has generally outperformed its defense this season, did not have the best outing.

frankie abbot threw two interceptions and was held to under 200 yards passing for the second straight contest. running back cameron blackshear (PICTURED), however, added dimension by rushing for 115 yards and two scores on 28 carries.

bryce larsen led UC receivers with 85 yards on six receptions while hauling in a score. aiyden holliday finished worth five catches for 59 yards.

virginia’s senior qb marquise evans struggled to stay on the field following numerous grueling hits. he threw just over 100 yards, a score and an interception.

taylor spicer was the only UVA receiver to finish with more than a singe reception, totaling nine for 100 yards and a touchdown.

senior corner blake miller added two interceptions.

spartans blow past former conference rival old dominion

by: beast10 — cfb week 12

cathedral is years past its previous status as a C-USA team. they made sure of that saturday with a 49-24 victory over old dominion, a revisited rival who they have, in the past, struggled against.

the no. 23-ranked spartans led this one 37-15 before the half. huge plays such a defensive safety, and ensuing 74 yard kickoff return by jalen house-brown (PICTURED) fueled the sellout crowd at father dalmoro stadium.

“i give a lot of credit to our defense these past two weeks,” uc coach bo pelini said. “they have came up with the stops we needed. the front seven is generating pressure and our secondary is making plays. this game could’ve easily been a shootout.”

that is how it began, as the two teams traded long td throws of 36 and 63 yards on each opening possession. cathedral quickly broke away in their eventual 500 yard offensive outing.

frankie abbot completed 20-of-36 passes for 343 yards, a touchdown and interception. he added two ground scores and 35 yards while cameron blackshear and akeem houston pitched in 40 and 44 yards, respectively. both scored once.

aiyden holliday had a career day receiving with eight catches for 166 yards. deshone kilroy caught the opening 36 yard touchdown and finished with three receptions for 74 yards. senior bryce larsen totaled 57 yards on six catches.

nine spartans got on the board with at least one reception.

r.j. parrish had an impressive day in the secondary with six tackles while tying a single-game school record with two interceptions. parrish, a junior, now ties former DB donte’ mclaurin for third on UC’s all-time interception list.

ishaq graves had two sacks.

spartans close regular season at VT’s lane stadium

by: beast10 — cfb week 13

cathedral’s next opponent is no. 5 virginia tech who will play hosts to saturday’s night game at lane stadium.

the hokies are 9-1 this season with their lone loss coming to then-top ranked georgia tech in week six. they have been anchored by a top 10 statistical defense, including the no. 2 ranked secondary in the country.

offense has been no pushover, led by senior and second year starter jason harris who was thrown for 26 touchdowns to 10 interceptions this season. also in the backfield, keith robinson, has contributed 1,077 rush yards and 10 scores.

robert harris is the biggest threat outside for VT with 53 receptions for 866 yards. he has 10 receiving scores which is top 10 in the conference.

the spartans trounced a far less superior VT team last season at home.

cathedral stuns no. 5 virginia tech on the road

by: beast10 — cfb week 13

virginia tech had a 66 yard touchdown reception from mike thompson called back as time expired, prevailing cathedral as victors in a 49-42 decision saturday at lane stadium.

this was a stunning victory for the spartans, ranked no. 20 in AP polls. virginia tech was riding high with a 9-1 record and ranked fifth in the country.

frankie abbot played a huge role as the senior quarterback threw for a career high 481 yards and four touchdowns. aside from three interceptions, he found receivers for touchdowns of 34, 40, 43 and 47 yards.

abbot added a score himself from six yards out during the third quarter.

“we had an answer for every shot they took,” head coach bo pelini said. “one thing about frankie is, the kid never hangs his head. he gets to the sideline, figures out the issue and gets ready for the next series. i love that about him.”

the spartans seemed out of it following a 21-7 first quarter in which they trailed. cathedral reversed it in the second, prompting a back and forth affair until the final minutes.

with 30 seconds remaining, abbot flipped a run at the line of scrimmage which led to the go-ahead 15 yard touchdown from akeem houston.

“that was a heads up call,” pelini said. “it saved his tail, because earlier he made an audible and tossed a pick from the two.”

cathedral had 603 yards of offense and 29 first downs in the thriller.

aiyden holliday tallied eight receptions for 125 yards, deshone kilroy added another six for 118, and bryce larsen paced the team with nine catches for 117 yards.

all scored, along with victory throne-noble.

VT’s jason harris was highly efficient, passing 13-of-19 for 266 yards and four touchdowns.

his receivers made unbelievable catches all game against the UC secondary. robert thomas had six catches for 159 yards and scored twice.
