Re: #SWARM: A Westlake State Dynasty - Part II

I've decided I'm just gonna do weekly articles for the most part. Just don't really like summing up 3-4 weeks into one post. Some will be really short (if I get blown out, or blow out some trash team, I'm not doing more than like 200 words on that s--t, and if I have some boring games in a row, I'll group them into one post), and the ones for good games will be longer, win or lose. This way I can add more storylines week to week, which I really like doing.

Preciate it. I got the quote idea from Guru's UConn dynasty (check it out if you haven't, it's what I hope to create with this), but yeah man I put effort into this for sure. Stay tuned, you ain't seen nothing yet lol.

And you the man for that thread on turning off fatigue. Got some great games coming up, thanks to you bro.

RUDE AWAKENING FOR SWARM

Darriel Mack Jr. (#8, in white), breaks free for one of his 3 touchdowns

52-6 beatdown at hand of UCF -- 35-3 at the half -- 313 yards, 6 scores for UCF on the ground -- Mack Jr. goes for over 300 total yards, 3 scores

Westlake, OH -- This was never going to be an easy game for the Swarm. What nobody expected was a 52-6 home blowout. UCF came out swinging, picking off Swarm QB Robert Hollis, setting up a 45 yard drive capped by a TD run from tailback Bentavious Thompson, who had 3 total scores on the day. After a UCF stop, QB Darriel Mack Jr. marched his team right back downfield and the drive ended in another score, this time on a jet sweep from wideout Otis Anderson.

The Swarm managed a field goal. Then Thompson took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to the house. 21-3. At this point, the game wasn't quite over yet. A couple stops were traded, then Thompson ran in another TD. Then the Knights picked off Robert Hollis again, and Mack only needed one play to go the distance. 35-3 at the half.

The Swarm were demoralized after that, giving up 17 more points in the 2nd half, and managing just one more field goal.

THRILLER IN TAMPA! SWARM MOUNT COMEBACK TO WIN 47-44 IN OT

TOP: Robert Hollis fires a strike to fullback Markus Carey (#82) to send it to OT BOTTOM: Hollis falls into the end zone for the game winning score

Robert Hollis finds Markus Carey for game-tying TD with 12 seconds to go, scores winning TD in OT -- Clutch defensive plays spark comeback -- Favors impressed with Hollis' clutch gene

Tampa, FL -- What. A. Game. The Westlake State Swarm defeated the USF Bulls 47-44, in what was undoubtedly one of the best games so far this year. The Swarm were coming off a 52-6 embarrassment at the hands of UCF, and were determined to not go down to the 1-3 Bulls. It looked like a defensive battle, with Swarm corner Mark Thompson opening the scoring, picking off an errant Jake Frye pass, and going the distance. The only other points that quarter came on a USF field goal from 31 yards out.

But then the 2nd quarter rolled around, and points came in bunches, with the Bulls outscoring the Swarm 21-13 in the period. Wideout Brandon Butler played a huge role in getting the offense some points, first setting up a field goal with an impressive 69 yard catch, then catching a TD pass with 9 seconds to go in the half.

I still don't know how Butler (in white) caught this ball.

The 3rd quarter saw USF score a quick 10 points to go up 34-20, then pick off Robert Hollis. It wasn't looking good for the Swarm, and a 3 score lead may have seen this game play out differently. But Marques Cannon jumped a screen for a short pick-6 the very next play.

Cannon's pick-6 saved the game for Westlake State.

USF came right back, with Jon Small scoring his 2nd TD of the day after a quick drive.

Absolutely nothing was going well offensively for either team in the 4th. Westlake State couldn't move the ball, and UCF kept getting stuffed just shy of field goal range. But the Bulls had the ball with under a minute left, and just had to get a first down to close it out. Frye threw over the middle to WR Kevaughn Phillips, who caught it, took a step, and got rocked by FS James Small, knocking the ball loose. Joe Moss was able to fall on it to give Westlake hope.

42 seconds left, 2 timeouts for Robert Hollis, 48 yards to the endzone. He found Butler for a quick 18 yard gain, then found tailback Evan Scott for a 27 yard gain, but that was called back for clipping. 2nd down saw a 2 yard gain. 3rd down saw Hollis miss a wide open Marquis Sims. 4th and 8. Hollis dropped back, rolled left, saw no one, and ran right at 2 UCF defenders. By some miracle, he avoided them both, and got all the way down to the 16 with 15 seconds to go.

On 1st and 10, Hollis found seldom used fullback Markus Carey, lining up as a tight end, for a 16 yard score to send the game to OT.

OT was over pretty fast. USF was held to a field goal, then Hollis scored the winning TD on the 3rd play of the Swarm's drive.

Head coach Zack Favors was impressed with Hollis.

HEAD COACH FAVORS CRITICIZED AFTER 59-40 LOSS TO NAVY

TOP: Rob Reese runs in a score BOTTOM: Derek Page gets stiff armed by Joshua McCutcheon

49-13 halftime lead for Navy as they put up over 400 rushing yards -- Swarm came in completely unprepared, looked lost all game

Westlake, OH -- After an exciting OT win at USF, the Swarm lost 59-40 to Navy this week. The game was far worse than the scoreline would suggest, with the Midshipmen going up 49-13 after 2 quarters of play.

Running back Rob Reese ran for 114 yards and 4 scores on just 8 carries. Half of the Swarm's 40 points were scored in the 4th quarter, when Navy just stopped really playing.

Head coach Zack Favors is being criticized for failing to prepare his squad for the triple option, and trying to run nickel packages for much of the first half. He had this to say:

Good to see this back in action. Know that army loss was tough, but an overall decent start to the year

ANOTHER NAIL-BITER AS SWARM WIN IN OT

Brandon Butler makes catch of the year to put Swarm up late -- No picks from Robert Hollis -- Swarm surrender just 193 passing yards

Greenville, NC -- Westlake State moved to 5-2 (2-2) on the season with a 30-24 OT win over now 3-3 (1-2) ECU.

The game started off badly for the Swarm, with bad playcalling resulting in 2 easy scores for the Pirates, putting them up 14-0 midway through the first.

Early scores from TE Ben Norris and HB Trace Christian put ECU up 14-0
Then the Swarm made some adjustments, finally stacking the box, and immediately forced a 3rd and long. Senior corner Mark Thompson picked off aKingsley Ifedi pass, and from there, the Swarm were able to get down the field and kick a field goal. The defense was lights out, shutting the Pirates out for the entire second and third quarters. But ECU's defense wasn't breaking either, allowing only an 80 yard TD catch from Brandon Butler and another Logan Ross field goal to make it a 14-13 game heading into the 4th.

At the start of the 4th, ECU made a goal line stand to force yet another field goal. They came back with a field goal of their own to make it 17-16. A few stops in a row, and the Swarm had the football at their own 20 with 2:44 left. After an incompletion and a sack, they were facing a 3rd and 16. Robert Hollis lobbed it up to Brandon Butler, who made a contested catch 2 yards shy of the marker. The Swarm had to go for it, and got it on a read option.

The very next play, Hollis saw saw Butler downfield and lobbed it up to him. The pass was slightly overthrown, and hit ECU safety Justin Robinson in the helmet. Somehow, Butler was able to stay in the air and corral the ball off the bounce, landed, shed a tackle, and went in for a score. WSU opted for a 2-point conversion, which succeeded, making the score 24-17 with 1:20 to go. Hollis was stunned that Butler made the catch, saying the following about his #1 receiver:

Quote:

He'll be scary good as a junior, it's a privilege to play with him.

Catch of the year?

ECU had a chance to force OT, and they took it, with Ifedi leading a quick drive, aided by some defensive confusion on 3rd and long, that ended with tailback Trace Christian scoring his 2nd TD of the game.

A last second Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete, and the teams headed to a short-lived OT.

Westlake State elected to defend, and on the very first play, Ifedi scrambled, picked up the first, but lost the ball after being wrapped up by Joe Moss. Free safety James Small came in to scoop it up, and went the distance, ending the game.

The last play of the game

Head coach Zack Favors applauded his team's improved defense.

The Swarm will return to Westlake to face off against #25 Army (6-1, 3-1), who boast the nation's #1 rushing attack, at 329 yards per game.
