HAWKS MOVE TO 3-1 ENTERING CONFERENCE PLAY

The Warhawks and Baylor Bears met in Waco in week 4. Both teams would be playing their last game before starting their conference schedules. In this game, Garrett Smith, the Warhawks QB would earn him self player of the week honors in the Sunbelt, despite his poor play pertaining to his assigned position.

ULM'S smith and Baylor's Zach Smith would account for seven interceptions between the two (3,4). Garrett, however, would account for five TD's as he threw two and ran three more in himself. He also passed for 213 yds and ran for 70 more. Derrick Gore was the workhorse for the offense as he rushed the ball a season/career high 35 times for 170 yds.

Baylor did hold a 24-14 halftime lead which included two pick sixes. Most thought that Smith had made two many mistakes and that the Warhawks were going to lose their second in a row. The defense, along with Smith's determination kept them in the game and eventually got them the win. The Warhawks start conference play in week 5 as they return home to face Tulane.

MONROE,LA
Well, our editor was wrong last week when saying the Baylor game was the Warhawks last game before conference play kicked off. This week the Warhawks return home to face C-USA foe, Tulane. Tulane has a dynamic QB who can certainly hurt the Warhawks with both his arm and legs. The defense should look to spy him when possible to help with containment.

Garret Smith, the Warhawks QB had a dominate game against Baylor, atleast in terms of scoring TD's. He accounted for all five touchdowns but also threw 3 INTS. He will, of course, attempt to eliminate those mistakes in this weeks game and going forward. The Hawks have a chance to enter their next game and conference play (we think) with a lot of momentum and a 4-1 record.

Mayfield getting hurt really put a damper on the Sooners Offense. Nice win.. Grabbing 3 out of 4 Non-Conference W's should at least set you up for a bowl game and hopefully with the "MO" moving forward into conference play maybe a double digit "W" season.

Yeah, I didn't love winning that game because I like a challenge and even with Mayfield out, they should have done pretty well. All of my games have been close though and I definitely dont feel like a win is guaranteed every time I play so that keeps it fun for me.

WEEK 5 2013

ULM WARHAWKS 3-1 (0-0)

VS

TULANE GREEN WAVE 2-2 (0-1)

FINAL SCORE
ULM-38
TULANE-34

MISSED FG,XP LEAD TO WARHAWKS VICTORY

MONROE, LOUISIANA

Coby Neenan is the Green Wave's freshman kicker. Although, he did not lose this game all by himself, he probably feels like he did. Neenan would clank a extra point off the left side of the goal post and miss a field goal in the second half. if those were made they would have equaled the total the Green Wave lost by.

Now, if he had made those kicks, whose to say they would have won anyway. Maybe they would have lost in overtime, maybe they would have won in regulation. All we know now, is the ending result of today's game and the fact that Neenan probably still fills sick.

The game started off with both teams running backs getting into the endzone in the first quarter. First, Derrick Gore of ULM would run it in from two yards out. Later in the quarter, Dontrell Hilliard would run it in from the same distance to tie the game at 7-7 after one.

Tulane's rushing attack was dominate during most of this game. So much in fact, Johnathan Banks didn't throw a single pass in the first quarter. The second quarter would start with the Warhawks taking the lead after a 39 yard FG by Kicker Craig Ford. After that, the Green Wave would go on a unanswered three touchdown streak as Banks would hit Dontrell Hillard on a 12 yd pass, Darnell Mooney on a 21 yarder, and Terren Encalade on a 35 yarder. Neenan would miss the XP after Encalade's touchdown.

Those scores put the Warhawks down 27-10 and with Tulane getting the ball in the second half, things did not look great. Garrett Smith also contributed to the Wave's scoring streak by throwing two of his three INT's in the second quarter. He would slightly redeem him self after hitting Xavier Brown on a 6 yard pass with one second left in the half to bring the score at halftime to 27-17.

In the third quarter, both defenses decided to hold their ground. The Warhawks had the lone score in the third as Gore rushed for another two yard score to make it 27-24 going into the fourth.

In the forth, The Green Wave would strike first, but late into the quarter, with 01:55 left in the game, they would take a lead that looked impractical to overcome as Banks hit Stephon Hunderson for a 32 yard TD to make it 34-24 with less than two minutes to go.

On the Warhawks next possession, on 2nd down, Garrett Smith would get pressure that forced him to scramble to his right. This scramble made a Tulane defender hesitate enough to leave Marcus Green wide open streaking down the sideline for a 79 yard touchdown. The time on the clock was 1:35 and the Warhawks were still in a tough position down three 34-31.

With that said, the Warhawks decided to attempt an onside kick as one of their timeouts had already been used. The onside kick, however, was unsuccessful. This led to the Warhawks ESPN chance to win at 3%.

This would all change after Juwan Offray made a key tackle on fourth down just before (1 yard) Dontrell Hilliard got a first down on a pass out of the backfield. This would give the Warhawks possession with no timeouts and very little time remaining.

Garrett Smith would come up clutch again, running the two minute offense to perfection and ending with a 10 yard pass for the lead, and win to Josh Pederson. This TD came with five seconds left. The Green Wave could not run the kickoff back and the Warhawks won 38-34.

ULM STAYS HOT WITH SHOOTOUT WIN
MONROE, LOUISIANA

Week six brought the Hilltoppers to town for the Warhawk's first conference game of the season. The game started off much like previous games, with ULM losing the toss and receiving the ball after WKU decided to defer to the second half.

Like previous games, the offense would march down the field and score VIA a rushing TD for the first score of the game. This TD, was by halfback Ben Luckett who is playing FB this season. After that score, ULM's defense would hold WKU to a three and out. The very next offensive play, Garrett Smith hit Marcus Green for a 55 YD TD. The throw was a bit underthrown, but lucikly WKU's defender over ran Green who had stopped to come back to the ball. Once he had the catch, he ran diagonal past the defender to the endzone.

On the Hilltopper's next offensive play, backup QB Drew Eckels was hit while unloading a pass. This pass was intercepted and taken to the house by FS Nick Ingram. The score was now 21-0 and it looked like the Warhawks would run away with the game.

The Hilltoppers would get a touchdown later in the first quarter and another in the second. ULM's Craig Ford would hit three FG's in the second quarter to bring the score at half to 30-14 in favor of the home team.

During the second quarter, Garrett Smith went down with a injury which is will more than likely keep him out for at least a couple of weeks.

Neither team would score in the third quarter.

In the forth quarter WKU would do their best to come back, but fall short as time expired with the final score of 47-40 giving ULM their first conference win.

WARHAWKS STAY HOT

SAN MARCOS, TX

The Warhawks enter the second half of the season as the leaders of the Sun Belt conference. Troy is closely behind with only one total and zero conference losses as well. The Warhawks will get a chance to play against Troy, but first they would have to get past Texas State. This being the first game that backup QB Caleb Evans has started. ULM would win the toss and elect to kick. The defense would do their job and get the Bobcat's offense off the field.

ULM would continue to follow their familar patter of marching down the field and Derrick Gore running it into the endzone from four yards out. Craig Ford would knock a FG in from twenty-six yards out to make the score 10-0 still in the first quarter. Texas State would also get going as Damien Williams hit Mason Hays on a 47 yard go route bomb for the score 10-7. The Warhawks would continue their first quarter dominance when Gore ran it in for his second TD of the game from twelve yards out. 17-7 ULM at the end of the first.

The second quarter would be a bit slower in the scoring department as Williams ran one in one himself to make the score 17-14 still in favor of the Warhawks. Late in the second quarter, ULM was driving and in the redzone. Coach called a curl route to the X receiver. Evans dropped back and hurled the ball toward Marcus Green. As the ball reached its destination, the Bobcat defender stepped in front of Green and picked the ball off. The defender would attempt to run the ball out where he was dropped at the 1 yard line leaving his team in tough field position. This would come back to bite the Bobcat's as on the next play, HB Anthony Smith would be tackled in the endzone for a saftey. 19-14 ULM at Half

The third quarter would see the Warhawks take charge shortly after receiving the kickoff, Derrick Gore would run in his third TD of the game. This time from 11 yards out. At this point Gore would also be inching toward his 100 yard goal. Ford would add another FG in the third to bring the score going into half at, 29-14 ULM.

The Bobcat's offense would still struggle in the second half. ULM scored another TD and TX State would add on two more points with a saftey of their own after Gore was stopped in the endzone. Tx State moves to 2-5 (0-3) and ULM moves to 6-1 (2-0). Up next ULM will face Georgia State.

WARHAWKS BOWL ELIGIBLE AFTER WIN OVER PANTHERS

MONROE,LOUISIANA

This would be a tough game for the Warhawks. They would be hit hard with the injury bug and it would initially be a struggle on both sides of the ball. Three players were injured for this game who had to be out for more than a few plays. Caleb Evans went down early in the first half with a injury that held him out for the remainder of the game, although he should return in week 10. Marcus Green would also go down in the first half, after catching his first pass of the game he got hit and did not get up. He is slated to miss 11 weeks aka the rest of the season. Lastly SS Collin Turner was injured as well and looks to be gone for at least one more week.

With Evan's injury, Sophomore Will Collins took control of the offense. Glenn Smith scored the first points of the game after the Panthers received the opening kick and easily drove down the field. Smith ran it in from 5 yards out to get GA State the 7-0 lead which would last through the end of the first quarter.

Just after the second quarter began, the Panthers would go up by two touchdowns (14-0) after QB Conner Manning kept it on a read play and ran it in from 46 yards out. ULM would manage a touchdown of their own on the next drive as Derrick Gore continued his excellent season with a 9 yard TD. The panthers would add a field goal and at half the core was 17-7 in favor of the away team.

It would be a tale of two halves however, as Georgia State would be held to one touchdown in the second half all while the Warhawks scored three to keep their winning streak alive.
