2020 Pre-Season Headlines (Arizona State)
To be Updated... these headlines will change and very unorganized clutter atm, but gives me something to focus on when I get around to writing it up within the next day or two.
- Consistency?: Coaches and fans expect more from QB Tony Dobzinksi his sophomore campaign...
Spoiler
Originally a 3-star prospect out of Okeechobee, FL - it didn't take long for Coach Karter to announce name Dobzinski as the Sun Devils starter in 2019. This wasn't a surprise, as Coach Karter flew down to Florida and visited the prospect in his home to personally extent the scholarship offer. He started 11 games going 7-4 and missed 2 games, a loss to Oregon and a win over Colorado, due to an injury he sustained @ Washington State. He was efficient in short-medium range throws and struggled hitting the deep ball. There was inconsistency in his game and he was frequently baited by defenders in throwing errant passes that turned into interceptions. QB Tony Dobzinski warms up with his teammates during spring training. The hits would pile on and the freshman QB was banged up. ASU was 4-4 when traveled to Washington State and won, but he was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter and would miss the next two football games. Despite erratic pocket behavior and 'happy-feet', he did show signs of composure, frequently coming through in clutch situations when a completed pass or play was needed the most. Perhaps this was best on display during their upset of #8 Michigan State when they traveled to East Lansing and defeated the Spartans on the final play of the game when Dobzinksi hit star WR David Parsons on a seam route down the sideline and he took it all the way to the end zone for a 75 Yd TD and a most-memorable ending that constituted an ESPN Instant Classic. That play became a highlight and finish that will be featured on sports media outlets for years to come. Even though Tony Dobzinski has their full support as the starting QB of the Sun Devils, Coach Karter and the staff acknowledged the inconsistency and did their best to either upgrade the position or at least bring in some competition. They heavily recruited in-state prospect and #1 pro-style QB Mark Barron, but he ultimately decided to sign with USC, a team that trounced ASU earlier in the season 52-28 @ the Sun Devils home stadium. Coach Karter publically stated he was disappointed in losing out on the hometown QB but stated he wished him the best and looked forward to seeing him play in the NFL. He must of thought really highly of Barron if he's already dubbing him a future NFL QB before he ever takes a snap in college. ASU signed a 3-star QB prospect Daniel Myrick from Newport Hills, Washington. He is a two-sport (football & basketball) athlete standing at 6'7'' and 237 lbs. Although he is expected to receive significant time on the basketball court as a Forward, with Tony Dobzinski, Brandon Glover, and Chase Little returning it doesn't appear as he's going to jump up the Depth Chart and will likely receive a redshirt.
- Running Back by Committee?: A productive backfield gets a new Light...
Spoiler
When Stevie Light walks into the weight room you're staring at a player built for football. When you watch him on the field, you can see that he's a rare athlete that combines speed, size, strength, and agility. At 6'2", 217 lbs and running a 4.52 in the 40 yd dash - the kid from Kenai, Alaska is more than just a youtube sensation. 6'2", 217 lbs #17 ATH Kenai, Alaska 40: 4.52 - BP: 375 lbs - SQ: 315 lbs His productivity made for one heck of a highlight reel and his athletic ability was undeniable, which earned him a spot on the SPARQ 100 and got him ranked as the #17 ATH by Rivals.com. He's an electrifying playmaker with the ball in his hands that can run, catch, and return kicks. Scouts however were concerned with his competition, or lack of. Alaska isn't known to be a breeding ground for football players and even though Stevie put together a highlight reel that compiled more than 1,000,000 views on YouTube, his lack of competition impacted his overall grade as a prospect.
- Nico Broussard rushed for 184 att, 916 Yds, 4 TD and contributed 258 Yds on 26 catches out the backfield. 5'10" 194 lbs from Knik-Fairview, AK. - FB/RB Mike Rodriguez and his role with the team. He averaged 6.6 YPC last season and scored 6 TD. - Everett Hollins So(RS) averaged 5.2 YPC and scored 4 TD's as a reserve and adding 88 yards receiving with 1 TD on a 65 Yd pass in the crucial moments against Washington State. - Freshman WR #15 Pierre Whitaker 6'3", 216 lbs, Hereford, TX. - David Parsons due for a breakout year in his senior season? He's been climbing up draft boards since his sophomore campaign. - JUCO Jr. CB George Montgomery 5'10" 181 lbs Clearwater, FL - starting Nickleback - more trouble than he's worth?

2020: Press-Conference following 31-28 win over California
ASU: S. Light 304 All-purpose Yds (9 Car, 38 Yds, 4 rec, 93 Yds, 1 TD, 4 KR, 82 Yds, 3 PR, 91 Yds, 1 TD) CAL: G. Washington 25-36, 299 Yds, 3 TD Press-Conference following 31-28 win over California, their 3rd consecutive away game, and the 3rd loss they've avenged from last season. The next two games feature Oregon and Utah at home, the only two remaining teams they lost to in 2019. If they win those two, they will have successfully avenged all their losses from the year before. Coach Karter emphasizes becoming victims of your own success. Talks about ego, blocking out the media, and keeping a chip on your soldier. When you're the underdog, you're constantly underestimated and overlooked. But when you're king of the hill, you walk around with a target on your back. (will be cleaned, edited, and perfected in near future) Last edited by War Daddy Rambo; 03-09-2018 at 04:01 AM. |

UPSET! #2 Arizona State falls to Washington State
PLAYERS OF THE GAME WSU: A. Reese 31-39, 320 Yds, 4 TD ASU: N. Broussard 18 Car, 105 Yds, TD 2020 has been the year of revenge for the Sun Devils - as they went on to defeat every team that beat them in 2019. They were ranked #2 in the country for the last 3 weeks. It was finally somebody else's turn for revenge - after throwing an early interception Washington State's QB Andre Reese was practically flawless on the field enroute to a 37-24 victory in Sun Devil stadium. He finished 31/39, 320 Yds, 4 TD and the lone INT in the beginning of the 1st Quarter. Last year Andre Reese would watch the Cougars fall in an ESPN classic as the Sun Devils shut down his attempt of a last second comeback by stopping his WR on the 1 Yd line with no timeouts left and not enough time to get to the line and stop the clock. It was a miraculous effort by the then Jr QB who drove his team down the field and put them a Yd away from victory but ultimately ran out of time. This year he didn't waste any time as he threw 3 TD in the first half putting the Cougars up 21-17. Both defenses turned it up and played a stellar 2nd half limiting WSU to 2 FG's. Tony Dobzinski would hit D. Parsons on a 41 Yd TD pass midway through the 4th qtr to close the gap 27-24. Reese would have none of it. He would drive his team down the field, chew clock, and cap it off with a 3 Yd TD pass to one of his favorite targets E. Davis to give them a 31-24 lead. E. Davis finished with 5 rec, 88 Yds, and 2 TD. After the defense forced a turnover on downs on the following drive, they rubbed some salt in the wound when they kicked a 48 Yd FG with :29 seconds left on the clock, clinching the victory and the upset. (will be polished later. TBC...) Last edited by War Daddy Rambo; 03-09-2018 at 03:56 AM. |
