Re: The New Monsters

Bears Bash Legion Of Gloom

Week 2‘s Monday Night Football contest was a good example of how quickly things can change in the NFL, as the revamped Chicago Bears trounced the crumbling Seattle Seahawks, 34-3. The rout was a result of the Bears excelling at what had been the mainstays of the Seahawks when they were a playoff-caliber team- defense and a strong running game. The Chicago defense has not allowed a touchdown since its first series of the season (thanks to a holding call on J.R. Sweezy negating a long touchdown reception by Jaron Brown), and it took the Seahawks until the 3:21 mark of the 3rd quarter to convert a 3rd down. And while the Chicago front 7 failed to record a sack, it did pressure Russell Wilson into 3 picks. On offense, both Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen reached the century mark. Howard ground out exactly 100 yards on 20 carries, while the vast majority of Cohen’s 111 came on a 75 yard touchdown scamper.

The first of two interceptions by Kyle Fuller came on the game’s third play from scrimmage and was returned to the Seattle 16. Howard reached the 3 on the next play and scored on the following one. Chicago led 20-0 at the half and when the Seahawks finally got on the board by way of a field goal, the Bears’ next offensive play was Cohen’s TD. Danny Trevathan closed out the scoring with a 46 yard pick-six.

As a result of the victory, the Bears are 2-0 for the first time since 2013, when a 3-0 start unfortunately deteriorated into an 8-8 finish. The 2015 Seahawks started out 0-2, but rebounded to go 10-6 and reach the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the divisional round by Cam Newton and the Panthers- but this Seattle team is missing many of the key pieces of that earlier squad. It has been 16 years since the Bears were 2-0 and Seattle was 0-2, but hopefully Chicago will not repeat what happened from Week 3 on, going 2-12 in the next 14 games. The 2002 Seahawks also did not fare well, finishing 7-9.

There were several casualties during the game, with linebackers Khalil Mack and Sam Acho and right guard Kyle Long all going out for the Bears. Mack will be good to go and Long (thumb) has yet to be ruled out for next Sunday. Acho, however, has a shoulder tear that is expected to take a month or so to mend. The Seahawks lost both Doug Baldwin and Tyler Lockett. Lockett is expected to start in Week 3, but Baldwin sustained an abdominal tear and will be out 3-4 weeks.

Game Notes
The Bears are looking to move into unfamiliar territory as they will improve to 3-0 with a win down in the desert, but the Cardinals are not as bad as some 0-2 teams- their Week 2 loss to the Rams came in overtime. That said, if the losing continues for the Cards, there are going to be more strident calls for rookie Josh Rosen to replace Sam Bradford.

Re: The New Monsters

Disaster In The Desert

Teams that were apparently headed in opposite directions did 180‘s on Sunday afternoon in Arizona as the Chicago Bears surprisingly found themselves on the receiving end of a thumping by the Cardinals. A road game on short rest following last Monday night’s rout of the Seattle Seahawks was not excuse for the turd dropped by Da Bears. Four turnovers, no takeaways and an early injury to Mitchell Trubisky fueled the first defeat of the head coaching career of Matt Nagy, and it was a fugly 30-6 one.

For the second time in three weeks, Chicago’s defense allowed a touchdown in the game’s initial series. Unlike opening day, however, more opposing TD’s were to come. On the Bears’ first play from scrimmage, Jordan Howard lost a fumble at the 29, and the Cards converted it into a field goal for a 10-0 lead. The next Chicago possession reached the Arizona 39 but fizzled out with an incomplete pass on third down, and on the play Trubisky got pummeled by Corey Peters, resulting in a shoulder strain that prematurely ended the signal-callers day. Arizona then went three and out, with the Bears beginning their third series at their 16. Chase Daniel’s first snap yielded a sack-fumble combo by Robert Nkemdiche, with Markus Golden getting the recovery at the 1. David Johnson lost 3 yards on the next play, but Sam Bradford hit J.J. Nelson for another touchdown. With score 17-0, the game was essentially over, as the Bears, hindered by two more Daniel turnovers (both INT’s) were unable to overcome the early deficit.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

THE FAB 5 - WEEK 3

1. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (3-0)

A much closer game this week, but the defending SB champs still have not lost in the 2017 regular season.

2. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (3-0)

Overcame a rare bad performance by Drew Brees with help from Alvin Kamara.

3. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (3-0)

Pulled an upset in The Battle of Los Angeles to join the AFC playoff conversation.

4. HOUSTON TEXANS (3-0)

Gained entry to the group by virtue of being one of the last 5 unbeaten and untied teams.
It also doesn’t hurt that the offense is putting up big numbers.

5. CAROLINA PANTHERS (3-0)

It’s already looking like the NFC South is down to a two-team race.

Mayfield And Rosen To Make First Career Starts In Week 4

Two rookie quarterbacks will be making their first career starts in Week 4, under differing circumstances. Sam Bradford’s groin injury is expected to take a month to heal, making Josh Rosen the Cardinals’ starter by default. Rosen could play well enough to make the job permanent. His numbers will go up against the 91.9 QBR and 5-2 TD-INT ratio that Bradford compiled before getting hurt. In finishing Arizona’s win over Chicago, Rosen went 5-of-6 for 47 yards and a TD.

With his Browns at 0-3 and Tyrod Taylor’s QBR at 75.7, Hue Jackson has given in to the pressure to start Baker Mayfield. Mayfield’s debut will come against the Oakland Raiders.
