S1W9 - MIA Trades Wake

As the season is beginning to look more and more like a lost cause as injuries continue to ravage this roster, the Miami Dolphins did the unthinkable - and unpopular! - and traded their stud defensive end Cameron Wake. The return for the 2nd leading sack man in the league: a 3rd and 7th round pick this year.

Here's the word from coach Adam Gase:

Quote:
Cameron has been nothing short of spectacular not just this year but for his entire tenure as a Miami Dolphin. He's the consummate professional and a player we built our defense and franchise's culture around. Throughout the season, we had an open-door policy with the player and his expectations for this season.

Being towards the end of his career, both the franchise and the player agreed he needed to be playing in meaningful games this season. The way the season started, it looked like we would be in the thick of things right from the start. Since the hot start, we have cooled off and suffered some serious injuries that will certainly hold us back. The Carolina Panthers, one of the top teams in the NFC, came calling and we thought this deal was a win-win for us and Cameron.

We want to make it public that Cam never once demanded or asked for a trade. We told him from the start we would do what was right by him as he has done for us throughout his career. The Miami Dolphins will be forever grateful for the last nine and a half seasons he has spent here and he will go down as one of the best to ever dawn a Dolphin jersey!
Cameron Wake currently has 103.5 sacks in his career, good for 29th most in NFL history.

The Carolina Panthers are adding an absolute missing piece to their defensive unit as he has more than double the amount of sacks as the next highest guy on the team. With phenomenal linebackers, a solid secondary and now a revamped defensive line, the Panthers have got to be considered the favorites to win the NFC South and challenge for the #1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

solid thread buddy
It is definitely not easy to rebuild a team like this. I'll let you comment on the trade we just swung (post directly above this) and you'll realize that I didn't make life much easier on myself going forward haha.

Thanks for checking in as always!

It'll be interesting to see how that trade shakes out in the long term for both teams, the Panthers defense just got better! But building up your draft capital will be huge to rebuilding this team!

Panthers got a major upgrade, hopefully you see some good talent in the draft, otherwise you came out on the losing end of this one!

Jordy Nelson turns back the clock and does his best Superman impression to haul in this deep pass from Derek Carr to put the Raiders into scoring position early in the first quarter.

The injuries continue to pile up for the Dolphins as their top safety - rookie Minkah Fitzpatrick - suffers a broken thumb after stoning Marshawn Lynch at the doorstep. He's scheduled to miss up to a month of games at the very least.

Derek Carr celebrates his first TD toss of the game, this one a 3-yard pitch-and-catch to new weapon Jordy Nelson.

One of the leading candidates for Defensive Player of the Year, Khalil Mack makes his presence known with his first sack of the game as Christian Ponder had no idea he was even coming.

Kenny Stills makes an impressive grab over the defender to bail out his inexperienced quarterback. The receiver had one of his better games of the season against the Raiders and has seemingly made a connection with Christian Ponder over the last two weeks.

Jeremy Langford fumbles near the goal line but luckily his lineman is there to scoop it up and rumble into the end zone, saving the Dolphins from blowing a huge opportunity.

Derek Carr refuses to slide after earning a first down and pays the price as Jerome Baker bears down on him and causes a fumble that Charles Harris scoops up to give Miami possession.

DeVante Parker can make any QB look good! Ponder throws one high and away from the defender and the young, athletic Parker goes up and gets it at its highest point and hauls it in for the big TD.

Backup RB Doug Martin celebrates his 10th - yes TENTH! - rushing touchdown on the season. Even while playing behind Marshawn Lynch, Martin has found himself more than useful in this Raider offense for Jon Gruden.

Christian pondering what went wrong as he opens the 2nd half with a pick-six on the very first play from scrimmage. Staring down your receiver is never a good idea. Things can only get better from here, right?

Or not! On Miami's very next offensive play, instead of going to the ground coach Adam Gase wanted to show confidence in his QB and allowed him to throw again. Not only was it another interception but Karl Joseph returned this one for a touchdown as well!

Kenny Stills shakes young Gareon Conley for an easy TD. Playing opposite of DeVante Parker has its perks and Stills was able to haul in four balls for 40 yards and this TD while still playing in a very limited offense.

After cutting the lead to seven, the Dolphins needed to force a punt. On 3rd down, Marshawn Lynch unleashed this vicious stiff arm and rumbled 69 yards down to the 1-yard line. Two plays later, he was in the end zone and the win was sealed in Oakland's favor.

It's not elite draft capital but it is something. We have so many holes on this roster that I figure as many tickets for the lottery I can get my hands on is worth it at this point.

There are some legit defensive ends in the draft so if we can get our hands on one of them they should be able to come in and attempt to fill the shoes of the exited Cameron Wake. I hated to make the move but it made too much sense for the franchise and the player.

As always fellas, thanks for checking in and sharing your opinions!

Bradberry celebrates an early sack. While the front seven played well, aside from this sack the Carolina secondary struggled throughout the ball game.

C.J. Anderson poses for the cameras after putting the Panthers on the scoreboard in the first quarter of the game. Little did he and his teammates know that those would be the last points the team scored.

Looking to cement his name as one of the best in the league, DeVante Parker makes yet another amazing catch as he elevates on this jump ball and boxes out the defender to make the long 40-yard reception.

Danny Amendola flexes after hauling in his third touchdown of the season. He has proven to be a viable option in the end zone as he works the back end line of the end zone with great effectiveness.

Jerome Baker celebrates a sack on Cam Newton with fellow linebacker Kiko Alonso. Newton tried to use his legs throughout the game but the Dolphins were able to keep his ground attack in check.

Not an efficient day on the ground but Jeremy Langford was able to pound in his first touchdown of the season six yards out.

A slight play action and Amendola's elite route running allows the slipper receiver to shake loose for a long gainer over the middle. His ability to get open has withstood the test of time and he's proven a very reliable target for all of Miami's quarterbacks this season.

You knew he would be jazzed up for this one and while he didn't get the win, Cameron Wake was able to collect two sacks in this one. He defended the run with ferocity and was able to harass Christian Ponder consistently in this one.

Late in the game C.J. Anderson would leave with what looked like a serious ankle or foot injury. The hope is for a speedy recovery to return before the playoffs begin.

Julius Peppers and Luke Kuechly combine for a hit on Kalen Ballage that sees the rookie cough up yet another fumble. In a late game situation where the offense is looking to burn clock, the back needs to learn to tuck it away and protect it at all costs.

Just a couple plays later, Cam Newton tries to make something happen with his legs and ends up fumbling as well. When you see a hard hitter like Reshad Jones, now the league leader in forced fumbles with four, coming full speed at you, you may want to get down!

A confident throw here by Christian Ponder sees DeVante Parker haul in his 7th touchdown of the season. He is now tied with seven other receivers for the most touchdown grabs on the season. He's also tied for 8th in the league for receptions with 49 and 5th in the league in receiving yards with 759.
