Troy and UTEP meet up for the first time in the schools histories. The Trojans stumble into this one, down 1-4 on the season while UTEP is actually performing well beyond expectations with a 2-3 record having upset Kansas and nearly stunning Tennessee in their most recent game. UTEP is led by Walter Dawn on offense, the sophomore halfback is having a break out year and will expect to continue his success against the Trojans as the Miners open up into their Sunbelt schedule.

For the Trojans, this season has been a massive disappointment, their offense which was supposed to be one of the best in the Sunbelt. A win could right their ship, it's not as if their season is over but they would need a strong showing in conference play to rectify their terrible opening near half of football.

The Trojans offense has a strong trio of starters, if they can develop a rhythm against the Miners early, it could set the tempo for a potential Trojan victory. The odds are in favor of the Miners right now, and this defense is looking for an opportunity to make a statement, they've done just enough to keep two victories under their belt, but this defense wants to show they can play. Alvin Jones has been on fire this season, and it's time for the rest of the defense to step up and join him. This defense shouldn't be ranked the worst in the NCAA, and Tyler McCray is a defensive oriented coach, the defensive coordinator Tom Mason is on the hotseat.

Projected Score: UTEP 20-14

Re: Blazing a Trail - Coaching Legacy of Tyler McCray (NCAA 14)

Denzel Chukwukelu rips down Brandon silvers, the sophomore had a huge game with three sacks.

17 @ 30

Miners defense leads the charge against the Trojans

In what has been their best defensive and special teams performance to date, the Miners claimed their second Sunbelt victory with a big win over the Troy Trojans on Saturday afternoon. A rainy afternoon with a subtle haze of grey set a tone for a defensive battle, and the Miners would hold the Trojans to under 300 yards of total offense including just 39 rushing yards. Not to mention the four turnovers that hampered Brandon Silvers otherwise solid afternoon. On special teams, the Miners would also add a touchdown on a punt return, showing the other two phases that had been deficient thus far coming to life in this one. Denzel Chukwukelu would earn player of the game honors for his three sacks. Whenever Silvers tried to slip the pocket, the sophomore defensive end was right there to kill any shot he would have of getting any serious yardage, which has been a major issue for this Miners squad.

The weather was certainly a factor, and it looked like it would lead this one to be a close one, especially as the score was in a near deadlock at 0-3 in favor of the Trojans at the end of the first quarter. Neither team's offense could keep a drive going, though in a battle of field possession it was the Trojans that would strike first with a long field goal. From then on though, the Miners would light up the scoreboard and rattle off twenty points in the second quarter.

It all was opened up on a Miners field goal, which knotted the game at 3 a piece, Brandon Viles knocking in a short field goal. After a defensive stop, Terry Juniel was able to follow his blockers, breaking two tackles as he would go for 66 yards and the touchdown. The first special teams touchdown of the season and a big one which broke the score open to a 10-3 lead. After stopping the Trojans yet again, it would be the Miners knocking in their second field gaol of the afternoon, a 26 yard chipshot after a drive would stall deep in the red zone.

The Trojans wanted a score before the half to prevent coming back to a 13-3 deficit where their offense was simply not performing. Plans don't always come to fruition however, Brandon Silvers would throw his second interception of the afternoon and give the ball back to the Miners on their end of the field, and Tyler McCray came out aggressive. It would work beautifully when the defensive back would shade the inside shoulder of Eddie Sinegal, and think he was going to break, the misstep allowed Ryan Metz to loft a beautiful pass to the sophomore wideout who reeled in the ball and went untouched for the 43 yard score. The longest offensive touchdown of the season for the Miners and they would head into the half leading 20-3.

The Sun Bowl was loud, but the Trojans got the ball coming out of the break. Their offense would finally show signs of life, with Brandon Silvers making some excellent throws and the ground game actually getting some gains, Brandon Silvers would find Damion Willis open on a post route, and the wideout would turn upfield, outrunning the rest of the Miners for the touchdown, bringing the score closer at 20-10. But the defenses for both squads would rise to the occassion, both teams trading possession. It would take a third interception from Brandon Silvers for the Miners to be set up in good field possession, and pushing the ball to the two, on second and goal the playaction bootleg would have Ryan Metz finding tight end Josh Weeks for his only reception of the afternoon and the touchdown which would seemingly ice the game for the Miners now up 27-10.

The Trojans couldn't get much going and after a fourth interception thrown, it would give the Miners the ball in good field possession midway through the quarter. Churning down the clock, their ground game would punish the Trojans as Walter Dawn eclipsed the century mark yet again in this final frame. The offense would get stopped late in the fourth, and Brandon Viles would knock in his third field goal of the game, another chipshot from 25 yards out. The Miners would be up 30-10 and the Trojans wouldn't have much time to do anything.

Give the Trojans credit for continuing to fight, and after a good kick return, their offense would churn out the yardage and first down, going sixty-three yards across 7 plays, before Brandon Silvers would find Emmanuel Thompson open in the flat, hitting his wideout who turned upfield and would fight his way into the endzone for a late touchdown. 30-17.

The Miners were able to go into victory formation and kneel the ball after burning the last of the Trojans timeouts thanks to two rushes from Walter Dawn for 14 yards that moved the chains the one time they needed after the Miners recovered the onside kick. Burning out the rest of the clock, UTEP would improve to 3-3 on the season, sitting at .500 halfway through. UTEP has next week off. Troy falls to 1-5 on the season, and one that had them pegged as one ofthe favorites in the Sunbelt has seen their season fall into a tailspin. 1-3 in conference play and just two losses away from losing bowl eligibility, everything that could go wrong for this squad has. Troy takes on the 5-1 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in their game.

"This was the best all around team performance that our team has put in this season. We gave up some yards at the end, but all in all this is the level I expect this team to play to, and when we play like this, there's no telling what will stop us. I expect my team to go out and play to win every week. I've been impressed with the heart they've shown this far, we got off to a bad start, but we're rolling now, and our goal remains to be bowl eligibility" Spoke Tyler McCray to the small press gathering following the game.

Sights from the Game

(1)Alvin Jones pulled in an interception, jumping the read on the pass, one of four for the Miners on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
(2)Damion Willis hauls in a long touchdown heave after breaking past what had been a stingy Miners secondary for the first Trojan touchdown of the afternoon.

(3)Nik Needham would jump a route, leaping in front of Tevaris McCormick for the interception that once again killed the Trojans momentum.
(4)Late in the first half, the Miners pushed the offensive trying to score again, and they would when Eddie Sinegal would break free and Ryan Metz would deliver a beauty to his wideout, connecting for another touchdown.

There we go. Dawn went beast mode again, and the Miners are well on their way to being bowl eligible. Those payday games were some good training for the rest of the schedule! I have high hopes for the season!

NCAA Week 8 Recap

#15 UCLA Bruins (5-1) 17 @ #3 Stanford Cardinal (7-0) 34

Josh Rosen threw for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but it wouldn't be enough for the Bruins who fell short against the Stanford Cardinal. The ground attack led by Bryce Love was just too much, Love led the Cardinal backs with 134 rushing yards and a single touchdown, a total of six Cardinal combined for over 250 yards on the ground. Connor Wedington had a pair of touchdowns, for an otherwise uneventful aerial attack from the Cardinal. Stanford is standing strong at 7-0, and a matchup against USC Trojans and the Stanford Cardinal looms.

#22 Texas Christian Horned Frogs (5-2) 21 vs #11 Oklahoma State Cowboys (6-1) 14

Kenny Hill had a touchdown pass and a touchdown run for the Horned Frogs who scored 14 points in the final four minutes of this contest to steal victory from the previously undefeated Cowboys. This upset hurts the Cowboys chances at a title game birth, sending them down all the way to #1. Mason Rudolph had a rough outing, throwing for two interceptions despite completing over 70% of his passes. Ultimately it would be the 215 rushing yards the Horned Frogs picked up and the turnover differential that lead the way to TCU's victory on Saturday. TCU improves to 5-2 and returns to the top 25 with this big victory.

#25 Florida State Seminoles (3-3) 7 vs #13 Clemson Tigers (5-2) 13

A back and forth defensive battle would be a true tug of war until the very final frame when a pair of Greg Huegel field goals would lead the Tigers past the Seminoles in this ACC tilt. Florida State has struggled this season, while Clemson is nearing the end of its ACC schedule, having already collected a conference record of 4-2. Kelly Bryant threw for 227 yards and overcame two interceptions by adding 40 on the ground. Jacques Patrick ran for 121 yards in the loss for the Seminoles.

#9 LSU Tigers (5-2) 28 vs Ole Miss Rebels (2-5) 23

LSU managed to stave off an opportunistic Ole Miss squad that was looking to try and claim a huge upset over the Danny Etling led LSU Tigers. Etling would have an up and down performance, throwing for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns with 2 interceptions. Jordan Wilkins had a huge performance rushing for 122 yards and adding all 3 Rebel touchdowns on Saturday, nearly leading to a stunning upset of the LSU Tigers.

In the first head to head matchup between these two teams, it's a battle of two teams going in opposite directions. For the Miners, they are coming off a huge victory that is looking to continue their momentum as they barrel their way through the bulk of their conference schedule. For the Warhawks, it's been a rough season and they are proving to be one of, if not the worst team in the college football ranks.

UTEP is led by Walter Dawn, the sophomore is expected to continue to have big performances, after usurping the starting role. He is near the top of the conference in rushing yards and his game against Tennessee truly stands out as a testament to what he can do when he's on. He is a very talented player and when he breaks into open space, he gets even more dangerous.

Defensively, the Miners have struggled this year, but in their last contest against the Troy Trojans the defense really stood strong, and buckled down. On top of that they had four sacks and four interceptions. If that kind of production continues from the defense it's incredibly difficult to even think about UL-Monroe eking out a win here.

For the Warhawks, their biggest challenge will be to not turn the ball over. A negative turnover differential coming into this game against a team that has thrived on forcing turnovers. Garrett Smith has 10 interceptions coming into this one, averaging at least one pick a game. If the Miners start forcing turnovers this one will be over quickly.

Prediction: 27-10 UTEP

Re: Blazing a Trail - Coaching Legacy of Tyler McCray (NCAA 14)

Ryan Metz lines up to throw the game winning strike. Ryan Metz had a career day against the Warhawks, leading the Miners to victory

38 vs 31

Ryan Metz's career day leads the Miners past a determined Warhawks squad

The rain was pouring, both teams were caked in a layer of mud and exhaustion was starting to wear on. Both teams spent the past 55 minutes beating up on one another. The next play could define this game that was tied in a deadlock at 31 a piece. Each team trying to get that one play that could put their team ahead. Ryan Metz called the cadence, and on the snap he would drop back, surveying the field.

Looking from left to right, two of his wide outs were locked down, but as he shifted to his third target, a streaking Tyler Batson, he saw the Trojan's defensive back slip in the mud as he tried to turn upfield to chase down Batson on the streak. Ryan stepped forward into the pocket and launched the ball. Catching Tyler Batson in stride, the senior wideout would look back once and see he wouldn't be caught. Sprinting into the endzone, he tossed the ball to the referee before raising a finger on each hand skyward. Celebrating as his team would catch up to him, swarming the senior.

That touchdown pass would put the Miners ahead for good on a Saturday afternoon mud bowl. Ryan Metz earned player of the game honors for a huge performance, passing for 454 yards and three touchdowns. He would also add over 40 yards on the ground with a pair of rushing touchdowns, raising his total to five. The junior quarterback has had a rough season of sorts, but this breakout performance came at the right time.

"It felt good. The conditions weren't good for the defensive backs and our wide outs were making great cuts. Terry [Juniel], Eddie [Sinegal] and Tyler [Batson] all were showing their corners up and I just made sure to hit them when they got open." Spoke Ryan Metz to the reporters following the game. It was a bit of an understatement, as Metz truly looked great in this one. His throws were on point and with high velocity.

This game was back and forth all day, as the rain poured down giving the defense trouble, unable to make good cuts and offensive players from both sides were running right past defenders. Stuck in mud took on a whole new meaning in this one.

Garrett Smith scored for the Warhawks early, after a fumble on the Miners first offensive play by Ryan Metz set the Warhawks up inside the twenty-five for their first offensive drive. It would only take three plays for Smith to connect with Marcus Green for the touchdown reception, a 7 yarder to open up this one. UTEP would respond with two touchdowns, though it would take most of the first quarter for their offense to get going, but once they would get into the red zone, he would find a hole and take off, going untouched twelve yards for a touchdown, his first of five total touchdowns and tying the game up. A quick three and out would give the Miners back, and on a first down play, Ryan Metz would be flushed out of the pocket but find Eddie Sinegal who broke past his coverage to reel in a huge 74 yard touchdown pass late in the first to give the Miners a lead heading into the next frame.

The Warhawks would respond by taking the lead back. It would take most of the second quarter but the Miners offense would struggle and ultimatley it was the Warhawks that won the field position battle. Walter Dawn would have only 20 yards in the first half averaging just 1.7 yards per carry as he was contained. Running back Derrick Gore struggled this afternoon in a big way as well for the Warhawks who deviated quickly from running the ball due tot he weather conditions. He would finish with just 6 yards, despite on his touchdown carry of 13 yards in the second quarter. That score would knot the game at 14 a piece. Ryan Metz would throw an interception that set the Warhawks up for a field goal and a three point lead. Tyler McCray didn't want to go into the half down and came out aggressive mixing a decent ground game with a great passing attack that got them inside of the redzone, and with six seconds on the clock he would bring out his field goal team. The field goal would be good leaving one second on the clock, and the kickoff would lead to halftime and a 17-17 deadlock.

The Warhawks came out firing after getting possession by virtue of winning the coin toss. Garrett Smith would guide his squad downfield and he would find RJ Turner open on a post, the wideout turned upfield and blazed past the safety for the go ahead score. Both teams trading possession until late in the third. On a second and short, the Miners decided to take a shot downfield, and Eddie Sinegal would break past his corner again. Ryan Metz would lay the ball out in front of him and he would reel it in, just barely outracing the cornerback to the end zone, tying the game on a huge 87 yard touchdown pass, and the teams moved into the fourth in a 24-24 tie.

There was a certain sense of energy in the air, and both teams started pulling all the shots in trying to secure a victory. Garrett Smith would notice the Miners safety cheating up, and on a streak, he would find Xavier Brown, who caught the ball in stride. No one would catch him and he would go the rest of the distance for a 75 yard score, giving the Warhawks an early lead as the fans started to grow louder.

The Miners would start to move the ball on the ground, Walter Dawn finally getting some creases and hitting the hole hard. His misdirection running style was hampered by weather conditions but in the fourth fatigue started to set in and the Miners offensive line started beating the Warhawks defensive, and they churned the ball downfield. Pushing the ball downfield, they would get into the redzone, and an option keeper would have Ryan Metz punch the ball right up the middle for the tying touchdown.

Louisiana-Monroe would come out gunslinging and after picking up a big first down that pushed them to midfield, they would get smothered, a sack and an offensive holding would send them all the way back to their own 33, and on a third and long an 8 yard completion would still require a punt. The Miners would get the ball back and after a solid return they would be near midfield. With their rushing attack working and the Warhawks stacking the box, they ran a passing play that would be connected to Tyler Batson as the senior would go up over the top to reel in a big pass. His touchdown reception would put the Miners up ahead for good.

The Warhawks would have a fast three and out on their next drive, and the Miners ground game churned out enough yards to burn out the rest of their clock. The Miners emerging victorious in this shootout, 38-31. Ryan Metz would earn player of the game and go on to also be named Sunbelt player of the week for his huge performance. The Miners improve to 4-3 on the season and will face the 3-5 Georgia State Panthers next week. For the Warhawks, a rough season sees their bowl hopes gone as they fall to 1-7 and are ineligible for the post season.

Sights from the Game

(1)Tyler Batson looks up at the crowd after his late touchdown put the Miners ahead for good on a heated November conference battle.
(2)Both lines stare eachother down at the point of attack. This back and forth battle saw both trenches locked in battle. It was the Miners who did just enough to claim victory.

(3)Terry Juniel skies for this ball, out leaping the defensive back who fell out of position as he reels in a long reception. The long ball was effective for both teams on Saturday.
(4)Garrett Smith had himself a game, and while his team wouldn't win, his performance was what nearly led to the upset of the Miners in this contest. On this throw, he connects for a touchdown pass.

Re: Blazing a Trail - Coaching Legacy of Tyler McCray (NCAA 14)

Gotta love a 4th quarter comeback, it gets the blood pumping! Good job pulling it together after they took the late lead, the team seemed to really rally.

Hell of a game by Metz, it's gotta feel nice that the passing game worked so well and took a bit of heat off of Dawn.
