West Virginia Retains Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy With 24-7 Victory Over Syracuse
SYRACUSE, NY - West Virginia (5-6, 2-4) retained the Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy with a 24-7 victory this afternoon at the Carrier Dome against the Syracuse Orange (3-7, 1-5). With the victory, the Mountaineers averted their seventh loss of the season, and will be bowl eligible with a victory in their regular season finale at home against Temple next Saturday.
It was an ugly outing tonight for West Virginia as they struggled offensively once again, but the Mountaineer defense stepped up in a big way, holding Syracuse to just seven offensive points while scoring a touchdown of their own.
West Virginia scored a touchdown on their first drive of the game as Rasheed Marshall scored a 21-yard rushing touchdown to put the Mountaineers up 7-0. Syracuse tied the game at 7-7 on their following drive as quarterback R.J. Anderson found Andrew Fontenette on a 28-yard strike.
The Mountaineers pulled ahead once again midway through the second quarter as Brian King intercepted Anderson and took it to the house from 79 yards out to put WVU up 14-7. In an instant, it went from Syracuse driving the ball for a go-ahead score to being down by a touchdown.
Neither team scored again until the fourth quarter as both teams struggled offensively, but Brad Cooper nailed a 23-yard field goal to extend the West Virginia lead to two scores, 17-7, with 6:02 left in the game. The Mountaineers added some insurance with Rasheed Marshall's second rushing touchdown of the game a couple minutes later to put the Mountaineers up by three scores, 24-7.
R.J. Anderson struggled for Syracuse, completing just 13/36 passes for 133 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Walter Reyes rushed for 116 yards on 15 carries, but the Orange neglected to run the ball as much as they probably should have, even though they were having success on the ground and Anderson and the passing attack were struggling.
West Virginia also struggled in the passing game. The Mountaineers amassed a season-low 47 passing yards as Rasheed Marshall completed just 6/18 passes and threw an interception, his 10th of the season. He did have success on the ground, however, rushing it 16 times for 56 yards and two touchdowns. Quincy Wilson also had a solid day on the ground with 61 rushing yards on 16 carries. Senior fullback Moe Fofana also returned to the lineup after missing the last three games with an injury, and made his presence felt today with 37 yards rushing on just six carries.
West Virginia will host Temple next week in both teams' season finales. With a win, the Mountaineers will finish the regular season at 6-6, including 3-4 in Big East Conference play, and will be eligible for a bowl game for the second consecutive year.
