Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty
The Heimlich Game
Written by Alex Flight on September 28th, 2013 The term "choke" is thrown around quite a bit in sports today to describe a team falling apart when it matters most. For an example of this, go ahead and look at the Wake Forest-Clemson game on Saturday. Wake Forest opened up at 4 score underdogs to #8 Clemson in Vegas, and had they known senior halfback Josh Harris would play sparingly due to injury. The Demon Deacons were not intimidated, however, and would force a 3 and out on Clemson's first drive. After QB Tanner Price was sacked on a scramble attempt following a good start to the drive, it looked like they would punt the ball right back. But Price had other plans as he found TE Spencer Bishop on 3rd and 9 for a 23 yard gain. Later in the drive, Harris' replacement DeAndre Martin would go beast mode. Breaking four tackles on the way to an 8 yard TD, Martin was determined to score and cap off the 72 yard drive to give the Demon Deacons the early lead over the favored Tigers. A holding call would derail Clemson's ensuing drive and they would have to punt once again. Once again Martin would look determined to score, trucking a defender on his way to a 60 yard gain before being caught from behind. He would finish off the drive later on from 1 yard out. Up 14-0 in the first quarter over a top 10 team, there was a lot of excitement back home in Winston-Salem. This only intensified when another holding call forced Clemson to punt for the third drive in a row. Feeling their hand around the Tigers throats, Tanner Price would take a deep shot to Michael Campanaro. Travis Blanks saw it coming and broke from his safety position right away to come away with the interception. In hindsight, this was the most important play of the game. Clemson would finally string together a long drive, and cap it off with a 2 yard touchdown from halfback Roderick McDowell. Wake Forest had an opportunity to take the momentum right back as Campanaro found a hole in the defense and would have had a walk in TD. With defenders right in his face, Price launched the pass but it came down just out of the diving Campanaro's reach. The drive would stall later, and Wake Forest would settle for a 34 yard field goal attempt, but Chad Hedlund would miss it off the upright. After the teams traded punts, Clemson would run out the clock to head to halftime trailing 14-7, looking like they may choke the easy win away and be upset. Looking to get the Demon Deacons off the field, the Tigers made some adjustments at halftime to become more aggressive. It looked like it would pay off early, but Michael Campanaro would pick up the first down on a corner route on 3rd and 7. An all out blitz would backfire later in the drive, and Orville Reynolds would pick up 23 yards and put the team in the red zone. An incompletion on 3rd and 2 forced a field goal attempt, but once again Hedlund hit the upright on the chip shot 25 yarder. Clemson would capitalize on the mistakes and cap a long drive with a 28 yard TD pass from Tajh Boyd to Charone Peake to tie the game. An overthrow of the intended target TE Matt James would lead to a three and out, and now it was the Demon Deacons who found it hard to breathe. Clemson's junior WR Sammy Watkins would beat Wake Forest corner Kevin Johnson badly on a double move, but Johnson was able to grab his jersey to stop the surefire touchdown in exchange for a defensive pass interference penalty. It would prove moot later as Watkins would score on a post route from 23 yards out, splitting the cover 2 defense. Spencer Bishop would drop a pass on 3rd down, and Wake Forest would have to punt. The defense would step up and force Clemson to do the same. Michael Campanaro would find a gap in the defense and pick up 53 yards on a post route. X receiver Jonathan Williams would score on a curl pattern the next play from 11 yards out. Clemson would get to midfield before being stifled once again. On a 3rd down, Wake Forest needed a conversion badly. As Vic Beasley wrapped up Price in the backfield with his fellow Tigers closing in as well, hope seemed lost. But doing his best Johnny Manziel impression, Price broke out of the sack, evaded 2 more defenders, and scrambled to a spot where he could set his feet and and find Spencer Bishop for a 28 yard gain. The tremendous play at players on the field and sideline buzzing with excitement, as the upset seemed closer than ever. Clemson safety Robert Smith had other plans, as he read the next pass concept and jumped the route. With blockers in front of him, he would take it all the way and Clemson was up 28-21. Desperation sat in as Wake Forest tried whatever it took to get a breath of fresh air, and it became worse as Price was sacked on 3rd down. Feeling the heat once again on 4th down, he had to force a pass and once again Robert Smith was there. Wake Forest would have to burn all 3 timeouts just for a chance to get the ball back. With Clemson in FG range already, it seemed like a pointless attempt. But a botched hold kept points off the board and Wake Forest had a chance. Having to go 80 yards in 24 seconds with no timeouts, it was a very small chance. After getting to about midfield, but being tackled in bounds, Wake Forest would hurry to the line for a Hail Mary attempt. As Price wound up for the throw he was hit by Vic Beasley, and this time Beasley held on for the game sealing sack. Wake Forest had choked a 14-0 first quarter lead, and lost 28-21. Even though it was a much more impressive performance than many expected, the Demon Deacons were still upset. "Being that close, having the opportunities we had, we should've won," head coach Jim Grobe said after the game, "I don't care what the gamblers say, our goal is to never lose. Not just cover the spread." On the hot seat heading into the season, this upset would have gave Grobe a great chance to stick around for next season. Instead, it's just another loss, albeit a confidence boosting one. After tweaking his ankle last week against Army, star running back Josh Harris was used sparingly today. He had only one carry for 10 yards. His backup DeAndre Martin stepped up big time, with 92 of his 127 yards coming after contact. It would be surprising for him to not see an increase in touches over the next few weeks. Wake Forest returns home next week to host North Carolina State. Recruits will be plentiful as coaches Jim Grobe and Quinn Morris felt it was a great visit weekend to show off. Because of this, expect them to do whatever it takes to win.

Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty
Down to the Last Play
Written by Alex Flight on October 5th, 2013 Wake Forest had 90 seconds to go 66 yards and get in the end zone to win the game, and it came down right to the last second. With too many recruits visiting to mention them all, this was a must win game for Wake Forest. A 24 yard Josh Harris run and Jonathan Williams 51 yard touchdown reception on the first two plays from scrimmage were a big step in the right direction. North Carolina State would piece together a long drive but miss a long field goal giving the Demon Deacons good field position. Matt James would feel a defender barreling down on the first play and let a pass go right off his hands. Corner Dontae Johnson quickly changed his intended action from laying out James to picking off the pass, having to dive to get back to it. A North Carolina State 3 and out rendered the great play meaningless though. Spencer Bishop would split the safeties and pick up 40 yards on the first play of the drive, flipping the field position. The offense would stall at the 34 yard line and Chad Hedlund would hit the crossbar on his field goal attempt to keep the score at 7-0. North Carolina State took this opportunity to piece together a long drive, ending it with a 4 yard TD pass from Brandon Mitchell to Marquez Valdes Scant. After jumping out to a 7-0 lead, the Demon Deacons had struggled since and now found the game tied 7-7. On the first play of the ensuing drive Tanner Price would take a long sack, but the offense would bounce back and put a drive together. Michael Campanaro would run a sit route and find a spot right in the middle of the linebacker zones for a 6 yard TD. After forcing a punt, Wake Forest had an opportunity to make a big splash before halftime. Facing a 3rd and 10, Price would underthrow his intended receiver and Brandon Pittman would be there to intercept it, Price’s second of the half. Already in FG range, NC State QB Pete Thomas would take back to back sacks and they would settle for a long field goal attempt that was missed wide left. Getting the ball back in good field position, Tanner Price would break a sack and find Jonathan Williams for a 31 yard gain. Later in the drive, Matt James would drop a pass in the end zone, and Wake Forest would have to settle for a 43 yard field goal attempt as time was running out. But Hedlunds struggles on the season continued and he missed it, also wide left. The score remained 14-7 at halftime. On the first drive of the second half, NC State would convert two long 3rd downs, but then stall out inside the 10 and settle for a 27 yard field goal. This one was good. Price would once again underthrow a pass, this time a dig route, and it was intercepted by Robert Caldwell. It was Price’s last attempt of the day as the coaches trotted out Patrick Thompson after NC State had scored a 23 yard TD. On Thompson’s first play, he would take a 15 yard sack. He would bounce back by finding Matt James in between the safeties for a 35 yard gain. Later in the drive Thompson would score on a QB sneak. Chad Hedlund would miss his 3rd kick of the game, and sixth of the season on the PAT. The Wolfpack wouldn’t slow down and score another touchdown on a 21 yard pass from Thomas to Travares Copeland. Down 4 about halfway through the 4th quarter, Wake Forest went to a run heavy offensive focus. They were eventually stopped short on a 3rd down, and hurried up to the line to go for it on 4th. Thompson audibled the play, dropped back, and saw an open man against the Wolfpack blitz. However, it was a zone blitz and a defensive lineman had dropped back to that spot, deflecting the pass away. There was still time left for Wake Forest to get the ball back, but the long drive that they allowed did not help at all. Finally being stopped at the 34 yard line, NC State trotted out the field goal unit. Despite not being a bad weather day, the kick was no good once again, the 5th combined miss on the day. With 90 seconds left, Patrick Thompson had to take his team 66 yards to win the game. Piecing together a drive, it looked like he had done it when he found Matt James at the 3 yard line for a first down. With no timeouts left, they hurried to the line for once last play. But James wasn’t getting up, injured on the play. Thompson must have not known what to do in the situation and failed to get another snap off after being forced to huddle. A devastating 24-20 loss, and Wake Forest enters the game with more questions than they had going into the game. The biggest question is what is the future of the quarterback position on the season? Patrick Thompson has outplayed Tanner Price on the season, but has played in a more conservative system. Price is one of the all time leading passers in school history, and offensive coordinator Quinn Morris has let him be more aggressive, leading the more turnovers. “We’re going to have to look at it over the bye week,” Morris said, “We have two good quarterbacks and we have to go with the guy that gives us the best chance to win. We’ll look at everything, including that mishap at the end of the game today.” Morris was obviously referring to Thompsons poor time management. Wake Forest has a bye next week before hosting Maryland on October 19th.

Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty
Halfway Point Shake Up
Written by Alex Flight on October 13th, 2013 Despite having a bye week this week, there is still plenty to write about in Winston-Salem. Let's start with the headliner. Patrick Thompson has taken all the first team reps this week, and is expected to be the new starting quarterback for the rest of the season. Thompson has played well in about a game and a half, and will replace Tanner Price. Price is 2nd in career passing yards and touchdowns at Wake Forest, and will now struggle to climb to the top spot. The rest of the backfield got shaken up as well. DeAndre Martin has been removed as the teams fullback on the school website, but is now listed along with Josh Harris as HB1. Jordan Garside is now the number one fullback, his true position. Martin has played well and brings a nice power complement to Harris' more finesse style. The last depth chart adjustment is one that might be skipped over normally, but is going to make a big difference. Alexander Kinal is now being assigned field goal and extra point duty, along with his usual punting and kickoff duty. This comes after regular kicker Chad Hedlund missed 2 field goals and an extra point in a 4 point loss to North Carolina State. On the recruiting front, four recruits have committed to Wake Forest in the last week. Alan Walters is the highlight. A 6'3" 4* WR from Simpsonville, South Carolina, Walters expressed high interest in Wake Forest from the beginning and was a highly sought after by the program. He could possibly expect to get playing time early. The other 3 commits will all add a level of toughness to the team. Joe Bell, a fullback; Jordan Howard, a center; and Mike Washington, a tackle should all be welcome additions to a team that has moved to a more power focused attack. All 3 are 1* recruits, but severely underrated, and Howard and Washington are both JUCO transfers. They are expected to compete for playing time right away due to the turnover on the offensive line after this season. At 2-4 on the season, Wake Forest faces an uphill battle in the second half. They will start by hosting 5-1 Maryland, who has been a surprise team this year. Their only loss is a 5 point loss at Florida State. Wake Forest then travels to Miami and Syracuse in consecutive weeks. Miami is long removed from "The U" days, and is 1-4 on the season. Syracuse is 3-3. Wake Forest then hosts Florida State, currently ranked #11 in the country and sitting at 4-1 on the season, and will likely be considerable underdogs against the preseason number 1. They then have another bye week before hosting Duke and traveling to Vanderbilt for an out of conference finish to the regular season. Duke is 3-3 and was ranked in the preseason polls, and Vanderbilt is 2-4 and at the bottom of the SEC as expected.

Re: An Unstoried History: A Wake Forest Dynasty
What Will The Future Hold?
Written by Alex Flight on October 15th, 2013 Coming into 2013, it looked like three 4 year starters would be the key to any Wake Forest success. Tanner Price, Josh Harris, and Michael Campanaro were all expected to have strong finishes to great careers. Halfway through the season that has not been the case. Campanaro and Harris have looked good--Campanaro is the second leading receiver on this team--but Tanner Price has struggled mightily. This struggle led to Quinn Morris and Jim Grobe deciding to start junior Patrick Thompson on this upcoming Saturday. While this news was obviously frustrating for the second leading passer in school history, Price has remained calm and demonstrated his leadership skills. "It does suck, but it's what the coaches felt was the right move," said Price earlier this week in a brief interview. Price has thrown 10 touchdowns to 14 interceptions through about four and a half games this season. "I've been trying to do too much, and it's hurt the team." Despite the struggle it appears this will remain an open competition, and Price will have an opportunity if Thompson also struggles. "I hope he comes out and plays great on Saturday. If he doesn't, I'll be ready. If he does, I'll be ready to take the starting job back on Monday." Transitioning to a further future, Wake Forest has been in talks with several teams for future non conference games. While the 2014 and 2015 schedules are set, they have several slots open beyond that. Notre Dame will be a common opponent over the years in games that are already scheduled in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2020. Outside of that the only major conference team on future schedules is a home and home with Indiana in 2015 and 2016. Wake Forest has seemingly been looking to change that, as there have been extensive talks with Missouri, Purdue, Northwestern, Texas Tech, and Arizona State. It is unlikely deals get done with all these schools, but it is exciting to see a commitment towards playing AQ schools. A full preview of future non conference games already announced is below.
Spoiler
2014-@ ULM, Gardner Webb, @ Utah State, Army
2015-Elon, @ Army, Indiana, Notre Dame 2016-@ Indiana, Army 2017-Utah State, @ Notre Dame 2018-Notre Dame 2019-Utah State 2020-Notre Dame
