Re: Rock Chalk, Jayhawk! | Maize's Kansas Dynasty
A quick note on this offseason and the coaching carousel that I just posted. I had to get a little creative because there was a few strange coaching changes.
Lance Anderson (Stanford DC) took over at USC - I replaced him with Jack Del Rio and updated the coach info. to match. Darrell Dickey (TAMU OC) took over at Kansas State and I replaced him with Chris Klieman. Same with Ilaisa Tuiaki at Akron, replaced with Tom Arth. Georgia Southern's OC took over at Utah State and I updated his info to match Gary Andersen. Appalachian State's DC took the HC job at Washington State, I replaced with Jay Hill. The Georgia Southern and Appalachian State coaches were default created coaches in the game since they were Teambuilder teams. I thought it would be fun to get real coaching changes into the game, even if that means not having their exact win/loss if they've coached previously. I updated playbooks and styles to match as best I could. This recruiting class and the next will include all real players for Kansas. In the Big XII, I will update recruits to match real life prospects this year. I probably won't do that in 2021, it's a lot of work! But that gives me a few more years of real recruits - even if that's not exactly where they end up. |

Re: Rock Chalk, Jayhawk! | Maize's Kansas Dynasty
Signing Day 2020: Meet the New Jayhawks Unexpected as it was, Kansas kept the momentum going; after a bowl appearance and the best season in a decade. A 6-7 record might not seem like a lot to some, but it's a huge improvement for the Jayhawks. That was enough to entice recruits to come join the rebuilding effort. The Class of 2020 could go down as the first major piece in that rebuild. A full class of 25 players signed, with many enrolling early having an opportunity to play next season. Not only was the class large, but it was Kansas' third-highest ranked recruiting class ever. The Class of 2006 remains the best ever, ranked 39th overall. 2011 was close, ranked 40th and similar to this year's class. The '20 Class is ranked 44th overall, 7th in the Big XII ahead of Baylor, Texas Tech and Iowa State. Aided by the class size, the ranking also shows that Les Miles and his coaching staff have started to build their pipeline. There is clearly a focus on Texas and Louisiana, while trying to win closer battles including targeting the best in-state players. This year, that strategy included big wins like landing the commit from running back Ky Thomas and defensive end Nate Matlack. Thomas and Matlack were two of the top five players in Kansas, both deciding early on signing with the Jayhawks. Heading into the offseason, Kansas had five scholarships available and they focused their efforts on “depth and diamond digging.” That, in the words of Les Miles, is how Kansas would use those lost scholarship spots in the Class of 2020. The coaching staff has also put an emphasis on finding a four-year players and not oversigning junior college players. That could mean the next two seasons will be reliant on first and second-year players. Yet, Les Miles knows this is the way to build the program the right way. Thus, all five players signed in the offseason were high school recruits that filled an area of need. The highest ranked player that committed in the offseason is Jevyon Ducker. The versatile running back from Nebraska had multiple FBS options, but saw Kansas as a good fit for his abilities. Given how the team has used multiple backs and used Pooka Williams in the passing game, Ducker liked the opportunity in Lawrence. Same with defenders Donovan Johnson and Rashad Muhammad. They both were recruited by Kevin Kane, who enjoyed highly productive senior seasons. Johnson comes to Kansas from Helen Cox High School in Louisiana, bypassing a preferred walk-on spot with in-state LSU. Muhammad comes from Arkansas, a pass rusher that has improved in run support. He still will need to bulk up to stay on the field, but the coaching staff likes that a player like Muhammad offers a skillset and a high ceiling. Surprisingly, Miles added a scholarship placekicker to this class. Tyler Loop is rated as a top five kicker in the Class of ‘20, proving in high school to be a consistent kicker. Loop might not offer the leg strength of someone like Liam Jones, but he could take over immediately on short distance kicks and extra points. Les Miles and Special Teams Coordinator Joe Robinson know the kicking game likely cost the team wins last season. If nothing else, points were left on the field. That’s a big enough concern that Kansas targeted Loop, offering him a chance to play early. Finally, the last scholarship went to an under-recruited lineman from Oklahoma. Ryan Chapman, a small school lineman, was considering going the Junior College route but received the FBS offer that he coveted. Players like Chapman are the “diamonds” that Miles has often referred to in the recruiting process. While only a one-star player, Miles is saying that all players coming in will have a chance to work into the two-deep. This class will be critical to building depth and the coaching staff is hoping they’ve struck on players who can play early. Pressure will be on this coaching staff to prove they can do more than recruit. Developing talent will become more important if Kansas truly wants to compete with the top of the conference.
