Re: 2001 Growing Pains: A Panthers Franchise
Lewis traded; Anderson, Biakabutuka Demoted Randall Cunningham is slated to be the backup behind Chris Weinke. --After another showing of ineptness on offense and defense, George Seifert shook thinks up. Days before the Panthers travel to Dallas to take on the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, Seifert traded quarterback Jeff Lewis to Baltimore. In exchange, the Panthers received backup quarterback Randall Cunningham and a 7th round pick in next year's draft. George Seifert-"Randall has been around the league a while. His veteran presence will only help this team." The departure of Lewis can only mean that Chris Weinke will now take the reigns of Carolina's offense. After Lewis was unable to get the Panthers in the endzone through six quarters, Weinke drove the Panthers to 21 points in the second half against the Falcons. In other news, starters Rashard Anderson and Tim Biakabutuka have been demoted for the time being. Jimmy Hitchcock and Richard Hundley have been marked in as starters for Monday night. Biakabutuka is only averaging around 3 yards per carry so far this season, and Anderson has been burned by both Freddie Mitchell and Shawn Jefferson in back to back weeks.

Re: 2001 Growing Pains: A Panthers Franchise
Week Three Preview --After allowing 47 points against the Eagles and Falcons, the Panthers look to right the ship this week when they take on the Cowboys. After trading quarterback Jeff Lewis to the Ravens, the Panthers made clear that rookie quarterback Chris Weinke will be the starter going forward. The Panthers also benched Tim Biakabutuka in favor of Richard Hundley to try to get something going in the running game. Richard Hundley-"I am glad for this opportunity to show what I can still do. I know Chris is going to look to me to provide steady yardage and make it simple for him." On defense, cornerback Rashard Anderson has been demoted to third string after getting burnt in back to back weeks. Jimmy Hitchcock is slated to make his first start of the season. The Cowboys defense let Tiki Barber and Kerry Collins do what they wanted last week when they played the Giants, allowing Barber to rack up over 160 yards while allowing Collins to pass for over 250. They eventually would allow the Giants to kick a last second field goal to win 26-24. Safety Darren Woodson-"We have to get this defense together. We know we got a team coming in, Carolina, who are wanting their first win of the season. They are hungry and we will be ready for them."

Re: 2001 Growing Pains: A Panthers Franchise
Panthers Win Ugly in OT —It definitely wasn’t pretty, but the Panthers will take anything at this point. In an ugly game of miscues and penalties, kicker John Kasay booted through a 44 yard field goal in overtime to give the Panthers a 19-16 victory. John Kasay-“It feels good to finally get that first win. They say this one is the toughest. Hopefully it means more good things are in store for this team.” The Panthers made plays when they needed to, and it also helps when a little luck goes your way. Down 6-3 with under two minutes remaining, quarterback Chris Weinke was rushed out of the pocket. Weinke rolled to his right and fired a prayer in the endzone at receiver Muhsin Muhammad. At the same time, Muhammad ran away from the spot trying to find a place to get open. Luckily, receiver Donald Hayes was heading up the field and was able to snag it away from safety Darren Woodson for a 30 yard touchdown pass. Weinke was also almost intercepted in overtime when he misfired a pass to Wesley Walls. Fortunately, the ball was dropped. Chris Weinke-“They say it is sometimes better to be lucky than good and we definitely had luck on our side tonight.” While the running game was lacking once again, Hundley and Biakabutuka did just enough and had some good runs in overtime that set up Kasay’s winning field goal. The Panthers defense needs to be commended on a heck of a game. Though they did give up over 150 yards to future Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, they did pick off Cowboys quarterback Tony Banks four times and held him to under 150 yards passing. Panthers cornerback Jimmy Hitchcock made the most of his first start, recording two of those interceptions. The most crucial of them came in the second half. With the Cowboys inside the 10 yard line poised for a score, linebacker Dan Morgan picked off Banks in the endzone. The Panthers (1-2) go on their early bye week with some momentum now before they play the Redskins in two weeks. Re: 2001 Growing Pains: A Panthers Franchise
Week Five Preview --With their first win under their belt, the Panthers look to keep it going this Sunday at home against the Washington Redskins. Coming off of a bye, the Panthers are rested and ready to somehow overcome the Redskins great secondary. Muhsin Muhammad-"Their cornerback depth is really good with Champ, Primetime and Darrell Green back there. It will really be a test for us." Not only is the secondary formidable, the Panthers defense also has the task of stopping running back Stephen Davis. Through four games, Davis has already amassed 465 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Davis has helped George open up the playaction pass, and George's arm can certainly make all the throws. Fortunately for the Panthers, if there is one thing they have done it is force interceptions. The Panthers are +1 in turnover differential and have 8 interceptions in their past two games.

Re: 2001 Growing Pains: A Panthers Franchise
Davis, Redskins Run Over Panthers —It seems no matter who the back is, expect them to carve up the Panthers defense. On a day where there were few bright spots, Redskins halfback Stephen Davis ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns as the Redskins beat the Panthers 57-9. Nothing could stop Davis in this game as he bulldozed his way through the defense, breaking tackle after tackle. And in relief, backup Michael Bates was able to rack off 5 yards a carry and a touchdown of his own. Quarterback Jeff George was having a good game as well before going out with injury. George threw for 127 yards and a touchdown before injuring his hand on a sack by Sean Gilbert. No matter, as rookie Sage Rosenfels did what he needed to do throwing for a score of his own. On the other side, the trio of Deion Sanders, Champ Bailey and Darrell Greene locked down the Panthers receivers all game, causing quarterback Chris Weinke to be afraid to throw the ball. In fact, on the Panthers first series Weinke was brought down by a coverage sack by lineman Kenard Lang for a safety. It went from bad to worse, as cornerback Champ Bailey returned the free kick back for a touchdown for an early 9-0 lead. And the rout was on. By halftime, and down 30-6, the Panthers kept handing the ball off to halfback Richard Hundley because they were gaining more yards on the ground than through the air. It amounted to little, as the Panthers had to resort to three field goals when they got into scoring range. Randall Cunningham came in for relief of Weinke after he had to be treated for an injury, which resulted in him getting picked off on his first pass attempt. (Left) Linebacker Shawn Barber picks off Cunningham; Stephen Davis stiff arms linebacker Dean Wells to the ground. (Left) Defensive tackle Sean Gilbert slings Jeff George to the ground; (Right) Receiver Lockett burned Hitchcock all game. Defensive Tackle Dan Wilkinson sacks Cunningham. Code:
