Re: Between The Hedges | Georgia Football (NCAA 14)

Bulldogs News
September 15th, 2013

‣ Recruiting heats up with first commitment

Despite having a bye week Georgia found themselves nabbing their first recruit of the season. Bobby Mueller is the 20th ranked outside linebacker and falls in as #332 of all prospects. Mueller comes in at 5'11" and 214 pounds. He ran a 4.58 40 meter dash, bench pressed 425 pounds, and squatted 680 pounds. Mueller hails from Eustis High School in Eustis, Florida. Mueller likely won't find himself starting in his first year on campus but has the potential to be a starter by his junior or senior year.

In other recruiting news, Georiga is betting the farm for recruits in the upcoming game against #10 LSU. While the names have not been released there are reports that up to 8 recruits will be visiting Sanford Stadium for the marquee matchup. This matchup has the potential to sway many recruits towards Georgia if they can beat LSU and will be a high stakes game for recruiting.

‣ Gurley gets the nod for North Texas

After an intense battle for the top spot on the depth chart, head coach Mark Richt announced Todd Gurley as the starter for the upcoming matchup against North Texas. Gurley has been in competition against Keith Marshall for the top spot after Richt said the players would stop equalizing the work load in the run game.

Gurley currently is averaging 3.9 yards per carry while Marshall is averaging 1.4 yards per carry. This likely played a part in the decision as Marshall has not seemed as comfortable in the run game as Gurley has. Regardless of the prior circumstances one of these running backs will need to make a major impact if Georgia wants to live up to the pre-season expecatations.

‣ Bulldogs focused for game against North Texas

After a poor start, Georgia is looking to right the ship against North Texas (1-2) at Samford Stadium. Georgia will have to stay focused if they want to pick up the victory and not overlook North Texas.

North Texas comes in at 1-2 after losing two consecutive games to Ohio and Ball State. Those came after a 38-17 win against Idaho to start the season. The two losses are only by a combined 8 points as North Texas has been competitive in every match up so far. However, they have not faced any competition quite to the level of Georgia.

North Texas comes in with the #35 offense in the NCAA at 405 yards per game and their defense comes in a #55 in the NCAA with 330 yards per game allowed. Compared to Georgia, who has the #110 offense at 294.5 yards per game and #93 defense with 376.5 yards per game, they seem to have the upper hand but look for Georgia to right the ship against the lesser talent of North Texas.

Redshirt sophomore Brock Berglund leads the passing attack for the Mean Green. Berglund is 48-89 passing for 679 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions on the year. Redshirt junior Reggie Pegram will lead the rushing attack and has accured 241 yards on 55 carries for 3 touchdowns. Complementing this attack is junior Tanner Smith who has hauled in 11 passes for 180 yards and 1 touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball Lajaylin Smith leads the defense with 24 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. DQ Bowers is going to attempt to challenge the receiver on the outside. Bowers has 17 tackles on the year with a sack, an interception, and 4 pass deflections on the year.

Kickoff is set for 4:30 PM EST at Sanford Stadium and the game will be carried on ESPNU. The Bulldogs really need to make an impression on all the critics this game if they want to have any chance of making an arguement at the end of the season if the title shot appears for them.

Huge game out of Gurley and nice job securing that first win. Always nice to get that monkey off your back.

Solid win - North Texas forgot to show up it looks like. Hopefully this win keeps the momentum moving in the right direction.

Thanks, Cheese. It was nice to finally get our run game going. We have struggled significantly with that and this game was an improvement.

Thanks for the comment Proof. They showed up. They actually scored on their first drive to take a 7-0 lead. However, they abandoned the run and that finished them.

Re: Between The Hedges | Georgia Football (NCAA 14)

Bulldogs News
September 23rd, 2013

‣ Gurley cements starting job

After having one of the worst rushing attacks in the nation Georgia has bounced back behind the legs of Todd Gurley. Georgia's offense flourished with a running game as they beat North Texas 48-7. Georgia rushed for 218 yards as a team with 151 yards and 4 touchdowns coming from Gurley.

This was a relief for Georgia fans who saw both of the talent running backs on their team produce little yards on the ground. This seems to be due to a rotation that inhibited both running backs from gaining any momentum when it came to carrying the ball. Before the North Texas game head coach Mark Richt announced an end to the rotation and annoucned Gurley as the starter.

However, the re-emergence of the running game came against a weaker opponent. This week Georgia hosts #18 LSU and will really find out if the running game is revitalized or if it was a fluke against North Texas.

‣ Big weekend for Georgia recruiting

Georgia has a unique ability to make a large recruiting impact this week against LSU. Coach Mark Richt and his staff have elected to have 9 recruits attend the LSU game. The matchup between two teams ranked in the top 20 will also be one of the highlight games of the weekend as well.

One of the recruits visiting is the #1 FS in the country, Mike Smith. Smith comes from Fargo, ND and stands tall at 6'5" 210 pounds. Georgia has already offered Smith a scholarship and the rumor is that if Georgia impresses this weekend then Smith will sign with the Bulldogs.

Other recruits visiting are the #2 DE in the country Sam Sharpe, #13 G Brandon McCauley, #1 SS Chad Dickson, #6 TE Will Fowler, #5 DT Maurice Fields, #1 QB Aaron Hawkins, #10 T Andre McDonald, and #2 OLB Alex Smith.

That list is very impressive and Georgia would be happy to have any of them sign with the Bulldogs.

‣ Tigers come prowling to Sanford Stadium

A week after getting beat by Auburn 35-14, LSU comes into Athens looking for redemption. The LSU was embarrassed at home by Auburn but that isn't going to define thier season. Head coach Les Miles continued to talk about the importance of learning from the game and moving on in his post game press conference. It can be almost assured that LSU will come out this week looking to impress after last week's effort.

The QB position is still up in the air as redshirt senior Zach Mettenberger is listed as probable following an abdominal tear. Mettenberger is 20-43 on the season with 302 yards and 4 touchdowns. While Mettenberger has been hurt sophomore Stephen Rivers has stepped up to lead the Tigers. Rivers is 19-39 on the year with 251 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Les Miles has been tight lipped on who will start the game for the Tigers but the Bulldogs will surely hope that it is Rivers due to his inexpereince.

The running back position is strongly anchored by sophomore Jeremy Hill. Hill has rushed 84 times for 505 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. The powerful 6'2" 235 pound Hill will be a force that wears down the Georgia defense. Receiver Jarvis Landry will also be looking to cut through the Georgia secondary. LSU's leading receiver, Landry, has 11 catches on the year for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Defensively, redshirt senior Lamin Barrow is leading the team with 21 tackles, and 6 tackles for loss. His ability to fly across the field and interrupt the running game will be huge for LSU if they want to stop Todd Gurley. LSU also has 3 interceptions on the year from their secondary. One each from cornerback Jalen Mills, safety Ronald Martin, and safety Craig Loston. The secondary will be tested by Aaron Murray in this game as he continues to improve with improvements in the running game.

Look for this battle to be a tough one for both teams. If Georgia can get the running game going they will put themselves in a good position to win. On the defensive end of things Georgia will need to come up with a solution to stop Jeremy Hill. Georgia's rush defense looked weak last week before North Texas abandoned it due to the defeicit.
