Re: Fear the Mullet: Mike Gundy's Oklahoma State Cowboys

Coach Mike Gundy
Resume
1990 Oklahoma State (WR)
1991–1993 Oklahoma State (QB)
1994–1995 Oklahoma State (OC/QB)
1996 Baylor (PGC/QB)
1997–2000 Maryland (PGC/QB/WR)
2001–2004 Oklahoma State (AHC/OC)
2005–present Oklahoma State (Head Coach)

Record: 114-53

After graduation, Gundy immediately joined the Oklahoma State football staff at the age of 23. He coached the receivers in 1990, the quarterbacks from 1991-1993 and in 1995, and served as offensive coordinator during the 1994 season in the final year for Gundy’s college coach, Pat Jones. Gundy coached in Stillwater under each of the three previous Cowboy head coaches (Jones, Bob Simmons and Les Miles).

He spent one season at Baylor (1996) as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator before heading to the ACC, where he coached at Maryland from 1997-2000. He returned to Stillwater in 2001 as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, and he also coached OSU quarterbacks.

Gundy is just the third Oklahoma State graduate to assume the head coaching duties in Stillwater. Jim Lookabaugh (1939-49) and Floyd Gass (1969-71) were the others.

The Man, The Myth, The Mullet: Recently, Coach Gundy has won over college football fans with his sweet hair. Gundy is well known through the college football world for his ambient personality, and now he has the hair to boot.

Re: Fear the Mullet: Mike Gundy's Oklahoma State Cowboys

2018 Preview

Offense
The offense is led by redshirt senior quarterback Taylor Cornelius. Gundy expects Cornelius to take the reigns of this offense and have a very productive year. On the ground, the Cowboys will be led by Justice Hill, who is one of the best returning backs in the nation. With a good year, Hill could very well declare early and head to the NFL. The receiving corps, led by redshirt junior Tyron Johnson, is young but talented. Expect Cornelius to distribute the ball well among the group. The wild card for the Cowboys offense is the line. With 3 starters returning, the Pokes seem poised for another big year on offense.

Defense
The Pokes return an experienced defense led by inside backer Justin Phillips. The secondary struggled last year, but corners AJ Williams and Rodarius Green had great springs and should contribute more this year. Up front look for Jordan Brailford, who had 11 TFLs and 5 sacks as a redshirt sophomore, to have a big season.

Special Teams
Punter Zach Sinor returns for another Heisman campaign (in case you missed his lobbying last year). The redshirt senior averaged 43 yards per punt last season, and will be in the talks for the Guy award. Place kicker Matt Ammendola returns, he was 23/29 last season.

Outlook
The Pokes return a lot of experience for this season. If the defense can improve on last year, expect the Cowboys to contend for the Big 12 title. Offensively, Justice Hill will carry the load, and if Taylor Cornelius plays as well as he did in the spring the Cowboys will put up points.

Projection: 8-4
