A New Beginning: Journey to Greatness | ULM Warhawks

Lubbock, Texas
- Texas Tech is on a rough 3 game losing streak. Sitting 0-3, 0-1 this would be a perfect opportunity for the ULM Warhawks to take advantage and try and secure a win. On paper though, Texas Tech should dominate in every phase. The offense, Defense, Special Teams. With lack of solid QB play for ULM, this will be a tough one. Thankfully for though Senior QB Dexter Nass is back from his previous injury and has been giving the go to start this week. Sophomore QB Anthony Walker filled in for the first two games and didn't perform well at all to keep his job. Last week loss against Old Dominion Sophmore QB Will Collins had to take over for Walker. Which he did succeed very well. Collins will be backing up Nass this game.

Watch Out For:

Can QB Dexter Nass come back strong and lead this ULM to a win over a tough defense and keep his starting job? Or will, Will Collins be asked to take over once again.

ULM
secondary and Texas Tech WR's. ULM secondary has to play exceptionally well against these wideouts or they will easily be down big quickly if they don't.

Can ULM junior WR Zazl Green getting going? After last week solid performance, can he keep it up and provided help for QB Dexter Nass?

Turnover Battle: ULM has turned the ball over like crazy the first 2 games. Can they finally clean this up? Winning the turnover battle is key for victory in this matchup. QB play HAS to be good!

Score Projection: 20-45

Texas Tech takes this one easily and absolutely dominates ULM. Too many issues with ULM right now. I can't see them playing clean football and not making errors. The QB play is really concerning right now as Walker, Collins both turned it over like crazy. I see Nass doing the same thing. Especially against a good defense like this one. I could be wrong, maybe they do and Nass plays great and gives these 'Hawks a win.

I expect TTech to come out guns a blazing. I don't have a good feeling about ULM in this one. Good luck to you.

ULM Seconday Struggles | Texas Tech Rips Apart ULM Defense.

Lubbock, Texas
- This game couldn't have gotten any uglier for ULM defense if they tried. Texas Tech QB Nic Shimonek lit up ULM defense for 437 Yards, 1 TD and another 112 Yards rushing and a TD. Texas Tech almost had 3 Wideouts above 100 yards each. The secondary was very suspect and played poorly in man to man. Lack of ability to recognize the routes being run lead to wide open guys. Majority of the game this was a shootout as ULM QB dexter Nass put on a show and proved he can be our guy. going for 17/38 343 Yards 3 TDs and a pick. Solid showing, just wasn't enough.

ULM Has dropped 2 straight and giving up an average of 42.5 points a game while only scoring 33.5 a game. ULM has the offense to score the points but doesn't have a defense to show it can stop teams from scoring. Either ULM wins in a shootout or gets blown. Defensively 'Hawks have to change it up to get a win. Next game is the first game in Sun Belt against a 0-5 team, Texas State. Can ULM pull off a win and get back to .500?

You surely were right haha. They came out guns blazing and never looked back. Luckily we were able to keep up until finally Texas Tech Defense clamped down on us and ours couldn’t.

Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks Recruiting Updating | Week 6 Bye Week

Drew Fankfrut, ESPN Staff Writer

October 2nd, 2013

_____________________________________________

Monroe, LA - Via ULM team website Coach Matt Viator had an important update about the up incoming recruits to ULM.
Quote:
Matt Viator: "Good news! Today we have received two verbal and written commits from WR Curtis Smith and G Craig Copeland. They are the first two in the 2013 class to be committed to playing football for ULM Warhawks in the future. We are feeling very confident in the other guys we have reached out to and look forward to meeting with them soon."

For ULM that is great news to receive such early news of two commits. G Craig Copeland will boost that o-line as protection this year from the ULM o-line has been a big concern. Then WR Curtis Smith will help a lot when next year class of 2014 will be graduating 4 WR's so depth will be needed. Whoever plays QB next season for ULM will appreciate an additional weapon as well.

Bad News

After the loss at Texas Tech, coach Matt Viator also releases news on following injuries to Junior DT Derion Ford who will miss rest of the season with a broken foot and fellow Junior HB Ben Luckett will miss rest of the season as well with a torn Achilles. Both were special teams players. Viator input on the injuries:
Quote:
Matt Viator: "It's sad to see these guys go down. Both Ben and Derion are competitors and always giving it 100% no matter what we ask of them. They might have not been starters, but the younger kids looked up to these guys because their work ethics were so good. Next year, we can't wait to see how these two bounce back."

As usual, Alabama is still undefeated and Ohio State is still keeping up with them. Georgia has been a surprise with not being in the top 10. Florida and Florida State seemed to like being within one of each other.
Heisman watch has changed up quite a bit as the C Bradley Bozeman has fallen out of the race for now. Instead, QB Kent Myer has taken his place and HB Quinton Davis has been added into the picture as well. OU QB Travis Johnson has been excellent this season so far and is heavily favored to win Heisman.

Sun Belt conference play is mediocre at best. At this point, it's looking right Arkansas State or New Mexico State will be the champs for Sun Belt. Not a surprise for considering the talent in the Sun Belt is rather weak.

In other News for Sun Belt teams

Rumor has it New Mexico State might go independent after the season is over depending on how they perform and rumored Arkansas State is looking elsewhere to play in a conference according to the front office at Arkansas. But it is unlikely things will change so soon. Maybe in 2015 being the earliest as possible.

Tom VanHaaren Matchup Roundup

Tom VanHaaren, ESPN Senior Writer

October 10th, 2013

______________________________________

San Marcos, Texas - Battle of two bad defenses. Who will prevail? On paper, the teams are dead even pretty much. Defensively they both struggle a lot stopping the rushing attack and giving up points. The difference maker is who can score more points and ULM averaging 35.3 a game compared to Texas State 19.5 a game will be the difference maker in this game. QB Dexter Nass lead ULM in Texas Tech game with a very solid performance against a decently good defense. Playing a bad one like Texas State, look for Nass to have a big game. HB Ashton Carter IV will be getting most the carries this game as HB Derrick Weton will be getting a limited amount due to lack of good play for ULM.

Texas State loves to run Read Option and go no-huddle to keep defenses on their toes. With a solid HB duel and QB with decent speed, this could be too much for ULM defense to handle. If ULM defense can step up and stop it, leaving it in Texas State QB hands to throw it might be proven to be a costly one as the Sophomore QB James Cotton hasn't been very reliable this season throwing the ball for Texas.

What to look out for:

Can ULM defense shut down the read option and force this QB to throw the ball? If so, ULM has a very good chance winning this game as long they can shut down the WR's when they do throw.

Can ULM finally get its running game going with HB Ashton Carter IV? Derrick Weton hasn't been able to produce results coach Matt Viator is looking for in the run game.

Texas State defense show up today to play? Or will QB Dexter Nass light them up and come out with a big W for ULM and get back on track after two-game losing streak.

Will Texas State QB James Cotton be efficient or will he be a turnover machine and cost them this game?

Score Projection: 38-35

ULM will sneak out of here with this one barely. The read option will be proven to be too much for ULM defense and it'll be a shootout game. Thankfully though, Nass will lead ULM on one last drive for the game-winning field goal to get ULM back to .500. If Cotton can get it going early and be dominate through the air, look out ULM, this will be a long game and possibly a blow out.
