Renewing the Faith: Jason Garrett’s Cowboys

After an erratic 2017 campaign filled with injuries and suspensions, the Cowboys were somewhat fortunate to finish above the .500 mark. But Jason Garrett understands all too well that finishing above .500 and missing the playoffs isn’t going to cut it if he wants to be head coach of “America’s Team” for the long term.

Perhaps Garrett’s biggest task is getting Dak Prescott back on track. Prescott was thrilling his rookie season, yet turned in a skiddish sophomore campaign. The controversial QB (in eyes of most fans) will need to prove he can be the franchise leader for the Cowboys and the head coach will be tasked with getting his quarterback on track.

The most critical part of any NFL offseason is the draft. Below is the 2018 draft class for the Dallas Cowboys:

Round 1 (23): Marshall Rock, FS - Stanford
Round 2 (16): Sean Kirtman, LB - LSU**
Round 5 (27): Mike White, QB - W. Kentucky
Round 6 (23): Kemnavus Lager, WR - UCF
Round 7 (23): Devae Rodriguez, LB - Fresno State

**Traded 3rd round pick

Schedule
@ Cardinals (0-0)
vs Bucs (0-0)
@ Eagles (0-0)
@ Texans (0-0)

Re: Renewing the Faith: Jason Garrett’s Cowboys

Cowboys hope Amari Cooper fixes struggling offense

Dak Prescott hasn’t played his best football in 2018 to put it mildly. After 7 games, he’s posted 10 touchdowns, but with 15 interceptions and a poor 58% completion percentage. If the Cowboys want Dak to be their guy, it’s clear he’s going to need help.

Enter Amari Cooper. Acquiring his services was expensive, but it’s in an effort to save the season. It may not do much to help the struggling OL, which is leading the league in sacks allowed, but perhaps a reliable target on the outside will allow plays to develop quicker to get the ball out faster. We’ll see if the front office gets this right.

Re: Renewing the Faith: Jason Garrett’s Cowboys

Dak Prescott to miss 2-4 weeks with shoulder injury

Dak Prescott was injured early in a loss to the Redskins. He looked to be on his way to his best game of the season, before a Washington defender landed on him and hurt his shoulder. While obviously not good for the team, hopefully the break does Dak some good. He leads the league in interceptions by 11 (5 in one game), and is completing less that 60% of his passes.

At 4-6, the season is on the verge of being lost. And that matters, but for the long term development of Dak, maybe it’s not the worse thing for him to get a break from this rut.

Re: Renewing the Faith: Jason Garrett’s Cowboys

Lead by Cooper Rush, Cowboys claw back into playoff picture

It hasn’t been pretty and he hasn’t lit up the scoreboard, but Cooper Rush has played well enough to help the Cowboys win in his first 2 NFL starts. The coaching staff has emphasized protecting the football the last couple weeks and it’s shown in Cooper’s game.

Dak should be back in another game, and make no mistake - he’s the starter when healthy. But it’s advantageous for this team to have a backup QB step in and get this team back into postseason contention.
