The Schedule

The New York Giants schedule is highlighted by its six annual divisional games against the bitter rival Cowboys, Eagles, and Redskins. Also on the schedule this year are defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots and the rest of the AFC East. Big Blue gets its quadriennial game with Gang Green at MetLife Stadium, though the Jets will be the home team. This game will be on Thursday Night Football and is one of three primetime TV appearances for the Giants. The other two are the Sunday night opener at home against Dallas and a thanksgiving night game against the Redskins in Washington.

Re: The Changing of the Guard | Madden '19 New York Giants Franchise

Solid draft. Interesting that you’re only taking two backs into the season. Really hoping nothing happens to Barkley or that could put a lot of the load on Herbert’s shoulder.

Nevertheless, this team instantly looks better without Eli Manning at the helm, imo. Very interested to see the new era of the New York “Football” Giants!

Week 1 Update

Herbert impresses in debut but Giants fall to Cowboys

The Giants rolled out their 2019 campaign with a lot of question marks from last year. One certainly got answered on Monday night as rookie quarterback Justin Herbert threw a mostly sensational game, finishing with 373 yards and 4 touchdowns.

It almost seems that with those numbers and the way Herbert was described in the opener that the Giants couldn't have lost. That is, until they did.

"It's just frustrating, you see a lot of guys go out and have great games and for us as a team to not be able to get the win today leaves a bad taste," said veteran linebacker Alec Ogletree. Ogletree saw firsthand what it meant to miss a chance to keep momentum. The dominoes in the second half fell almost entirely for the Cowboys. It started late in the third quarter when the Giants were up by a score and in possession of the ball. Big Blue was in position to grab a chokehold on the game, but Sterling Shepard put the ball on the ground near midfield, giving the Cowboys life.

Dallas would get a field goal out of that drive, and the Giants would again try to get themselves positioned to command the game. They seemed to have it on a blocked field goal early in the fourth. New York scored off the Cowboys miscue to go up by eleven, but Ogletree's moment was coming.

On the second play of the drive, Cowboys backup Gardner Minshew lined up in the shotgun and ran a screen play to Ezekiel Elliot. Ogletree read it perfectly and was prepared to deliver a bone crushing 4 yard loss, but Elliot never went to the ground, and ran 71 yards from there for a score. The two point conversion made it a 3 point game.

While the defense was trying to figure out what hit them, the Giants offense went 3-and-out, and the Cowboys took the ball and drove down the field for the go-ahead score. Herbert gave the Giants one last opportunity, but ended up missing a wide open Ryan Grant in the end zone on fourth down with less than a minute to go, and the Cowboys ran out the clock to send the collective blood pressure of Giants players, coaches and fans through the roof.

There was a key injury on each side to note. The Cowboys took what could be a big blow as Dak Prescott went down in the third quarter. While backup Gardner Minshew played very well, Prescott's absence could be concerning if it is for an extended period of time. For the Giants, rookie center Elgton Jenkins left the game late and did not return.

Week 2 Preview

The New York Giants will travel to the Pacific Northwest for a Sunday afternoon showdown with the 12th man and the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are led by quarterback Russell Wilson, who is in his eighth year at the helm. The age-old Wilson-Doug Baldwin connection went for over 100 yards last week, but Seattle couldn't generate a ground game and fell to the Ravens 21-13 in their opener. A wild card for the Seahawks in this game could be Greedy Williams. Williams is a rookie out of LSU who was Seattle's first-round pick at #3 this season and who has the potential to make Justin Herbert's day very difficult. As feared by Giants officials, Elgton Jenkins will be out long-term, with Brett Jones replacing him at center.

Week 2 Update

Giants show a little fight but lose badly

"2018 called and told us it wants the turnovers back."

Those were the words of a frustrated Pat Shurmur in the Seattle visitor's locker room in the postgame, in allusion to a game that showed that the Giants had gone nowhere in a year.

Despite looking impressive in week 1, Justin Herbert looked completely lost in this game, throwing two interceptions, fumbling once, and throwing errrantly time and time again.

The run game looked promising for the Giants, but Herbert didn't hold up his end of the bargain enough to get ahead so that the Giants could use it. Shurmur was almost entirely limited to chunk plays by the time the fourth quarter hit.

To be entirely fair to the young quarterback, he did seem to settle in after Shurmur benched him for a series. Kyle Lauletta fumbled on his third play, and Herbert was immediately put back in the game on the next drive and threw decently well, but was burned by his teammates fumbling multiple times, including Cody Latimer fumbling a sure touchdown inside the five.

The defense was also mostly fine, that is, until the offense stopped being able to hold onto the ball. Left out to dry, the defense had to come up schemes to try to keep the Seahawks from scoring on short fields multiple times in just a few minutes, and the older players just could not keep up without fatiguing.

The loss will drop the Giants to 0-2 and puts them in a questioning state early. Dave Gettleman said in the offseason that he will not hesitate to make changes midseason if things aren't going as they need to be. We will see in the coming weeks just how committed he is to this.

Week 3 Preview

The Giants come back home for their first early-day time slot of the season against the Washington Redskins. The Redskins are 1-1 to start the season, with a narrow home win over the Panthers and a narrow road loss to the Eagles. The 'Skins are led by Alex Smith through the air and Chris Thompson on the ground. Zach Brown has been especially productive on defense, leading the team in tackles and already having three tackles for loss. The Giants will play another game without Elgton Jenkins up front, and the Redskins will be without some safety depth as Taylor Rapp has been ruled out for several weeks.

Giants make multiple moves

The New York Giants and Green Bay Packers completed their second trade in as many seasons today, in another player-for-pick deal. The Giants will be sending cornerback William Gay over to Green Bay in exchange for the Packers' sixth round draft pick in the 2020 draft. To fill the empty roster spot, the Giants signed cornerback Keion Crossen off of the New England Patriots' practice squad for a 1-year, $770K contract.

William Gay is 34 years old and was a contributing member of the Giants' secondary in 2018, but has barely been on the field in 2019 so far as a result of getting beat for the job by Donte Deayon. As an older player in decline, "his time has come," according to Dave Gettleman.

The Giants also came to a 1-year extension agreement with Morris Claiborne and have started talking to star wide receiver Sterling Shepard about a possible long-term extension.
