Week 3 Update

Giants roar back to get into win column

Last week it looked like the Giants couldn't do much right.

This week it looked like they could do no wrong, as Justin Herbert slung the ball all over the field, Saquon Barkley was effective when he needed to be and the defense was not bad overall in a resounding 44-27 win for Big Blue against Washington.

"I think there's a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde feel around here right now, where we're taking bad with good. I think we have shown that we can be a good team, it's just about being that all the time," said head coach Pat Shurmur.

Herbert looked every bit today like the quarterback the Giants wanted with the twelfth pick in the draft. He threw five touchdown passes and zero interceptions, a marked improvement from the two and two from a week ago. He also showcased an ability to run, getting close to 100 yards on the ground.

The Giants defense was much of the story of this one, though. As Herbert piled the points on the Redskins, the defense held Alex Smith and company to just six points in the first half. The unit did have a period of struggle for about 20 minutes in which they gave up 3 scores, but the Giants were well ahead at this point and the defense buckled down again at the end of the game.

Notably, the Giants' defense forced its first turnover of the season, a Janoris Jenkins interception that allowed New York to run out the clock on its first win of the season.

Week 4 Preview

The Giants will again go out on the road in an attempt to get back to .500. This one will be against the Minnesota Vikings, who are off to a 2-1 start. The Vikings lost their only other home game to this point, a 21-10 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams. Kirk Cousins is the Vikings' leader under center, and he comes in completing 63% of his passes and having thrown for 708 yards in three games. On the ground, Dalvin Cook is the main man, with Alfred Morris getting about a third of the carries so far. Jeffery Simmons has been a pleasant surprise for Minnesota, as he is the team's sack leader as a rookie. Former Giant Linval Joseph is right behind him, and they have 2.5 and 2 sacks, respectively.

Week 4 Update

Defensive struggle goes Giants way

Two weeks ago the Giants went on the road and couldn't stop a nosebleed, but they leave Minneapolis tonight with a win over the Vikings in which they didn't allow a touchdown.

Especially spectacular for New York was defensive leader Alec Ogletree, who had 10 tackles and two picks and had this to say after the game:

"It's been a long time, we've been bad on defense for a while, even before this year, but we knew that we had it in us this whole time and it was great to see it come out today."

The defense certainly showed a lot, but Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins was not alone in throwing struggles, as Giants quarterback Justin Herbert also threw three picks. Herbert said that the Vikings had a lot of things well-covered, and that he forced a few throws that he probably shouldn't have.

Herbert ended up not being needed much because of the offensive star of the game, Saquon Barkley. On two separate occasions, Barkley ran for 40 or more yards to hit paydirt. The first one came three plays after a Morris Claiborne interception, and went to the right past a crashing Vikings blitz 46 yards for a score.

The second one was much more important, though, as it came in the fourth quarter. Already on the drive Justin Herbert had converted a 4th down with a sneak. The Giants had been held off the scoreboard for the entire second half, and held a one-point lead. On first down, on the first play after the two minute warning, Barkley again went right, broke a tackle, and went 56 yards to make the lead eight.

Alec Ogletree picked off Kirk Cousins on the first play of the next drive, and Barkley sealed it with three runs for a first down. The win pushes New York to 2-2, and a team that many people had questions about seems to be right back in the thick of things.

The Giants will stay out on the road this coming week, but they will be much closer to home as they will play the rival Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are coming off a 10-6 loss to the Packers, but are 3-1. Carson Wentz is the Eagles' quarterback, and he is averaging 201.5 yards per game with six touchdowns. Jay Ajayi has been most of the rushing attack for the Eagles, and he is averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Defensively, the Eagles are led by a stable of veterans that includes Jalen Mills, Malcolm Jenkins, Nigel Bradham, and Jordan Hicks. Deionte Thompson has stepped in and been very impressive, with 23 tackles four games into his rookie season.

Sterling Shepard

Giants extend Sterling Shepard

On Tuesday the deal was done. Sterling Shepard will be returning to New York next year, which is a sigh of relief for Giants fans, as Shepard has grown into one of the better receivers in the National Football League. In total, Shepard's extension will last 4 years through the 2023 season, and will earn him $45 million. The money breaks down as $8.61M in 2020, $10.1M in 2021, $11.9M in 2022 and $14.4M in 2023.

The Giants also signed an extension deal with punter Riley Dixon and are in talks with cornerback Eli Apple and depth safety Darian Thompson.

Week 5 Update

Giants get rolled in Philly

It's been an up-and-down kind of season for the Giants so far. A heartbreaker and a bad loss to start, then two wins including a thriller against the Vikings last week. Now, they're back to square one. From Pat Shurmur:

"We can't respond to great games like we had last week like we did today. The Eagles are a really good team, and they are going to fight you, and you can't lay down. We laid down today, and part of that's on me, and part of that's on the guys on the field being mentally focused enough to go out there and make plays."

Nobody played particularly well in this one, starting with the quarterback. Justin Herbert was erratic, and he missed on several throws and threw 3 interceptions in the first half alone. The offensive line was part of the reason for that, and it was also the reason the Giants couldn't generate a running game, as it appeared nonexistent.

Defensively, there were some moments. Alec Ogletree picked off Carson Wentz's first pass of the day. There were two other interceptions, but as a whole the unit gave up far too many big plays. They couldn't stop Wentz and Jay Ajayi when it mattered. Tackling was a problem, as New York had trouble getting guys on the ground. This hurt them on plays like Dallas Goedert's touchdown, on which he broke a two-man tackle at the 30.

The Giants fall to 2-3 on the season, and with the trade deadline looming a few weeks away and several aging players on the roster, it will be interesting to see how the front office handles this season. Either way, expect Shurmur and Gettleman's changes threat to stay in effect for the team should they not live up to expectations.

Week 6 Preview

The Giants will play at home in week 6 for the first time this month as they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium. The Bucs won their first game of the season in week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers, and are 1-4, in last place in the NFC South. The Bucs are led under center by Jameis Winston, who has thrown for over 1,200 yards and has a 12-1 touchdown to interception ratio. Ronald Jones II and TJ Yeldon split carries for Tampa, though Jones gets about twice as many. Mike Evans has been on a tear, averaging 6 catches and 92 yards per game. Defensively, Lavonte David is the clear leader, with 46 tackles. Kwon Alexander has also been impressive, averaging almost one sack per game.

Don't sleep on the all-time single-season passing yards record holder you're right though it is a much improved team talent wise. Still a ways to go but I like where I'm at.

Week 6 Update

Giants run their way back to .500

When the Giants drafted Saquon Barkley with the number two overall pick in 2018, they expected him to be able to produce right away. After the day he had on Sunday against Tampa Bay, I think it's safe to say he is the guy the Giants thought they were getting.

"All the credit has to go out to the offensive line, you know you guys like to rag on them and they've definitely not always been perfect but they're some of the hardest working guys on the team and they deserve that respect. I can't find holes that don't exist and they gave me a lot of holes to run through today."

Barkley's words postgame seem to indicate that maybe the Giants are moving in a new direction for the better. Whether they are or not will probably need to be seen against a better opponent, but either way, Barkley's day was incredible, as he amassed a whopping 218 yards and two scores on the ground.

Almost as big a credit for the Giants' win today has to go to their defense, who struggled a bit in the first half but clamped all the way down in the second. The only points that the Bucs scored after the halftime break came on an Eric Reid pick-six, and the defense also produced a safety that changed the tide of the game.

The Giants couldn't win without some offense, though, and they got their offense in the second half by handing the ball to #26. Saquon has arrived, and the league is officially on notice.
