Kansas State Roughs Up UMass 48-3

MANHATTAN, KS - After a close call against No. 23 Wisconsin to open the season, some thought the UMass Minutemen (0-3) might show some promise this season. It's all come crashing down over the last couple weeks, however, with last week's loss to Maine and now today's 48-3 pasting against Kansas State (2-1).

The Wildcats outgained UMass 445-182 and dominated in all facets of the game. The Minutemen briefly pulled to within 17-3 late in the second quarter, but a touchdown less than a minute later extended the Kansas State lead to 24-3 at halftime.

The Wildcats continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring UMass 24-0 in the second half to win by 45 points.

Daniel Sams threw for 209 yards and scored two total touchdowns this afternoon for Kansas State. John Hubert starred for the Wildcats, however, as he rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. Hubert's 183-yard performance was the least rushing yards UMass has allowed a starting running back to amass this season as the Minutemen rush defense has been a sieve thus far in 2013.

UMass, meanwhile, struggled to generate any type of offense. Mike Wegzyn struggled passing the football, only throwing for 128 yards and a pick. To make matters worse, he was constantly under pressure and was sacked five times. The running game performed no better as Jordan Broadnax rushed for just 68 yards on 25 carries, which is a paltry 2.7 yards per attempt.

The good news for next week is that UMass is returning home to Foxborough. The bad news is that they already lost to Maine there a week ago. The worse news is that an undefeated and likely ranked Vanderbilt team will be coming to town. UMass will need all the luck they can get to knock off an upstart Commodores team.

Vanderbilt Stays Undefeated With 34-19 Road Victory at UMass

FOXBOROUGH, MA - No. 22 Vanderbilt (4-0) kept their undefeated season alive with a 34-19 road victory over the winless UMass Minutemen (0-4) this evening in Foxborough.

The Commodores got on the board in the first minute of the game when Kenny Ladler returned a fumble 42 yards for a scoop-and-score touchdown to put the away team up 7-0.

UMass scored two field goals to cut the lead to 7-6, but Vanderbilt pulled ahead late in the second quarter with 10 points to extend their lead to 17-6 at halftime. Vanderbilt continued to pull ahead in the third quarter with another 14 points to take a 31-6 lead going into the game's final quarter.

The Minutemen offense finally started to click in the closing minutes of the game, but it was too little, too late and the Minutemen unsurprisingly fell 34-19 this afternoon.

Despite the loss, it was somewhat of a success for UMass. The defense, which has struggled all year, held Vanderbilt to only 377 yards of total offense. More impressively, they held Vanderbilt to 116 rushing yards, which was by far the best performance of the season for the rushing defense.

Vanderbilt quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, a darkhorse Heisman candidate coming into today's game, played well, especially in the second half. He threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns.

UMass quarterback Mike Wegzyn passed for 253 yards and threw another interception, giving him six so far this year. Jordan Broadnax also had a solid game on the ground, rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 61 yards in the air, including a 48-yard screen pass in the first quarter that set up UMass' first score of the game.

UMass is off next week, but they will be back in action in two weeks at Bowling Green in their MAC conference-opener.

FCS East has a decent running QB, we couldn't stop him at all, killed us on a few third and longs.

Yeah, he was a problem in our game, too.

Six Turnovers Doom Bowling Green in 35-30 Loss to Winless Minutemen

BOWLING GREEN, OH - The Massachusetts Minutemen (1-4, 1-0) picked up their first win of the year this afternoon on the road at Bowling Green (2-4, 1-2). It took six turnovers for the Minutemen to pull off the narrow 35-30 victory, but, as they say, a win is a win.

UMass led by as 35-7 in the third quarter before Bowling Green started to mount a comeback, bolstered by a 52-yard scoop-and-score fumble return touchdown late in the third quarter.

Bowling Green's offense came alive in the second half and the UMass offense fell asleep at the wheel, allowing the Falcons to pull to within 35-30 with 4:44 left, a streak of 23 unanswered points.

The UMass offense, which had struggled in the second half, finally put together a nice drive after the ensuing kickoff, however, as they methodically drove the ball down the field and eventually made it to inside the Bowling Green five-yard line before time expired as they drained the last half quarter of the game to seal the defining victory, the first win of head coach Lee Williamson's career.

"I felt like we got a little lucky with the turnovers, but we'll take any win we can get," explained Williamson. "I thought we played really well today, but we got a little comfortable when we got up big and let our foot off the gas, which was disappointing. We have a lot of work to do, but today's a nice start."

The UMass defense held Bowling Green to only 98 yards rushing, though the pass-happy Falcons' offense had little reason to run the football after falling behind early. More impressively, the Minutemen forced six turnovers, including four interceptions of Bowling Green quarterback Matt Schilz and two fumble recoveries.

Offensively, UMass was without starting running back Jordan Broadnax, who suffered an injury during practice this week and is also expected to miss next week's game against Miami University.

Even in Broadnax's absence, the Minutemen rushed for 180 yards as a team. Matt Carini led the way with an impressive 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Stacey Bedell also added 65 yards on the ground.

Mike Wegzyn passed for 222 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception for UMass. D.J. Woods (6 Rec, 50 Yds, 2 TD) caught two touchdown passes and Bernard Davis (4 Rec, 46 Yds, TD) caught Wegzyn's other touchdown pass.

UMass will host Miami University next week. The Redhawks are off to a surprising 3-2 start this season, including 1-0 in MAC play.
