Fight Mass! - UMass Minutemen (NCAA Football 14)

I've decided to put my WVU dynasty with NCAA Football 2004 on hiatus after season five, at least for now. I was originally thinking of restarting with NCAA Football 2004 with some harder sliders and better recruiting house rules, but then I started dabbling with NCAA Football 14 again and came across some settings that have really revitalized the game for me (resetting fatigue after each quarter).

I have to admit that the lack of rotating conference schedules also starts to get kind of annoying as you progress in dynasty in NCAA Football 2004. Playing in the Big East with the round-robin schedule alleviates this to some degree, but I still had to face the same opponents in the same order each year, which obviously isn't the way the Big East's round-robin schedule worked in real life.

So, I decided to dive back into NCAA Football 14 for the first time in a while. I wanted to do a rags-to-riches type dynasty, and the logical place for me to go is UMass.

The Minutemen are one of the worst teams in the game, and are located in a pretty barren recruiting ground, which will hopefully make things interesting and keep it relatively challenging.

They also play at Gillette Stadium in the game (in real life, I believe they only play there for their bigger games), so if/when I am able to move the Minutemen into a major conference they will have a stadium that doesn't look out of place.

The settings I'm using have allowed the offenses to open up the game some more. I've often had issues getting the CPU offense to play up to par in this game in the past (especially in the red zone), but with these settings I've had good success at keeping the CPU offenses producing.

I've created a new coach named Lee Williamson who will take over as UMass' coach in the 2013 season on a five-year contract. At this point, I plan to stick with UMass throughout this dynasty (as opposed to moving to a better conference job if one becomes available), and will instead move UMass into a better conference if the opportunity presents itself.

Stylistically, this will be similar to my WVU NCAA Football 2004 dynasty.

2013 Massachusetts Minutemen Roster

(Number / Name / Rating / Height / Weight / Class)

(Redshirted players are shaded red)

OFFENSE

QB
11 Mike Wegzyn (72) 6'5, 215, RSo
9 Todd Stafford (66) 6'6, 240, Fr
15 A.J. Doyle (64) 6'3, 226, So
16 Brandon Hill (63) 6'5, 218, RJr
7 Elijah Barrows (62) 6'1, 180, RFr

HB
28 Jordan Broadnax (70) 5'9, 175, Jr
38 Matt Carini (69) 5'10, 200, RJr
21 Lorenzo Woodley (69) 6'0, 205, Fr
23 Stacey Bedell (68) 5'10, 185, RFr
22 Jamal Wilson (68) 5'10, 190, RSo

FB
44 Daquan Mack (59) 6'1, 245, Fr

Backfield Notes: Our backfield is solid for MAC standards. Mike Wegzyn is a decent MAC quarterback and as a redshirt sophomore, he has plenty of room to grow still. If UMass is to have a successful season this year, Wegzyn will have to play well. We are weak at fullback, but our offense doesn't use the fullback much, so this won't be a huge inhibiting factor.

WR
1 Tajae Sharpe (72) 6'2, 175, So
88 Bernard Davis (68) 6'1, 180, So
82 D.J. Woods (67) 5'10, 160, Fr
19 Brian Dowling (65) 5'9, 190, Jr
89 Derek Beck (64) 6'4, 205, So
8 Jaurice Jones (64) 6'1, 180, Jr
3 E.J. Burston (64) 6'2, 170, Fr
10 Shaquille Harris (63) 6'2, 185, Fr

TE
87 Rob Branchflower (77) 6'4, 250, RSr
83 Sharif Custis (63) 6'3, 215, Fr
60 Dan Foesel (60) 6'3, 240, RSo
85 Brandon Howard (53) 6'5, 250, RSo

Receivers Notes: Rob Branchflower is one of the best tight ends in the MAC. Aside from him, however, the Minutemen are lacking for talent, though they are young at receiver and this unit could be pretty good in a couple years once these guys are upperclassmen.

T
69 Tyrell Smith (67) 6'5, 285, RFr
71 Michael Boland (65) 6'7, 295, So
70 Anthony Dima (64) 6'7, 302, RSr
68 Jordan Page (64) 6'5, 302, Fr
63 Josh Bruns (58) 6'5, 290, RJr

G
65 Elijah Wilkinson (62) 6'4, 330, Fr
62 Cameron Mock (62) 6'7, 305, Fr
64 Al Lenus (60) 6'2, 295, So
61 Sam Zeff (57) 6'5, 277, Fr
76 Jamie Cassleberry (55) 6'6, 280, RSo

C
78 Matt Sparks (65) 6'4, 275, So
72 Fabian Hoeller (61) 6'3, 301, Fr

Offensive Line Notes: There's not a lot to like along the line aside from the fact that nearly all of these guys are underclassmen and should be solid in a couple years. For now, though, the UMass offensive line is going to struggle.

DEFENSE

DE
35 Stanley Andre (71) 6'2, 240, Sr
93 Kevin Byrne (69) 6'3, 290, RSr
54 Trey Seals (64) 6'4, 231, Jr
97 Daniel Maynes (62) 6'2, 230, RJr
77 Adam Richard (59) 6'3, 220, RFr
38 Peter Angeh (59) 6'2, 240, Fr

DT
49 Galen Clemons (64) 6'2, 275, RJr
95 Brandon Potvin (61) 6'1, 262, RSr
75 Robert Kitching (58) 6'1, 300, So
91 Tyler Major (55) 6'1, 290, RSr

Defensive Line Notes: We're pretty strong at defensive end. Stanley Andrew is one of the better defensive ends in the conference, and Kevin Byrne is pretty good, too. We're thinner at defensive tackle, though.

OLB
90 Kassan Messiah (74) 6'4, 215, So
37 Tom Brandt (67) 6'1, 215, RSr
47 Tim Brandt (65) 6'1, 212, RSr
43 John Robinson (62) 6'2, 225, So
40 Peter Ngobidi (60) 6'2, 220, Fr
29 Byron Cooper (56) 6'1, 200, RFr

MLB
50 Jovan Santos-Knox (71) 6'2, 235, So
55 Shane Huber (62) 6'3, 223, Fr
51 Steve Casali (58) 6'2, 225, Fr

Linebackers Notes: The linebackers are the strength of this defense. Kassan Messiah is one of the better linebackers in the MAC. Jovan Santos-Knox is a good middle linebacker, too. We're pretty young here, too.

CB
17 Randall Jette (73) 5'11, 175, RSo
20 Trey Dudley-Giles (70) 5'10, 170, So
39 Mike Lee (68) 6'1, 185, RSr
2 Antoine Tharpe (66) 5'10, 190, Sr
13 D'Metrius Williams (65) 5'11, 170, So
26 Quayshun Smith (62) 5'9, 160, Jr

FS
6 Ed Saint-Vil (69) 5'11, 190, RJr
46 Joe Colton (69) 5'8, 188, So
30 Ryan Carter (65) 5'11, 188, RSr
41 Arthur Williams (65) 6'3, 190, Fr

SS
21 Khary Bailey-Smith (71) 6'2, 190, So
32 Ryan Collins (58) 6'1, 188, RJr

Secondary Notes: The secondary isn't too shabby, either, though we're lacking for speed here. Randall Jette is the best player in the secondary, but Khary Bailey-Smith should rack up a lot of tackles this year at safety, especially given how leaky this year's defense is likely to be. He'll be depended on to keep the defense from getting gashed too badly.

SPECIALISTS

K
98 Blake Lucas (75) 5'8, 166, So

P
41 Jeff Strait (73) 6'0, 197, RSr

Specialists Notes: This is probably the strength of the team. Blake Lucas is a good place kicker, and Jeff Strait is also very good. Strait will be important as I expect Coach Williamson will be sending out the punting team early and often this year.

Re: Fight Mass! - UMass Minutemen (NCAA Football 14)

I’m a former UMass grad and remember distinctly playing with this exact roster in NCAA 14. Blanchflower is a beast and Tamar Sharpe is an NFL talent but not in this game lol. The defense is shockingly young and dynamic especially on the back end. The offensive line is young which is great for building up the squad. Good luck!

Excited to follow along. I've just kicked off a fresh dynasty where I'm starting as DC at EMU so it will be interesting to see how different our results are in the MAC.
