The North Carolina Tar Heels start the season off strong as was expected with a 42-14 victory over FCS program James Madison. The 1st string defense were the real stars of the show, allowing only 216 total yards and 1 touchdown through three quarters before giving way to the 2nd and 3rd string players for experience and to avoid unnecessary injury. Preseason All-American Quinton Coples lead a disruptive defensive front who totaled 5 sacks and 7 TFLs on the day. Donte Paige-Moss and JUCO transfer Sylvester Williams were major factors in that stat line with Paige-Moss racking up 2 sacks and a forced fumble and Williams with 4 of the TFLs. Jabari Price also forced an interception.

David Wooderson, the freshman newly starting quarterback, had a relatively successful premiere throwing for 268 yds and 3 TDs, but his 4 total turnovers (3 interceptions and 1 fumble lost) are reason for concern moving forward. Wooderson was strongly helped out by his main back in Giovani Bernard, who rushed for 92 yards on only 10 carries with 3 touchdowns. Bernard opened up the scoring with a 12 yard TD and later added a 47 yard burst to earn himself POTG honors.

True freshman tight end Eric Ebron really emerged as one of Wooderson’s favorite targets, catching his first touchdown on the Tar Heel’s second drive of the game, and adding another late in the 3rd quarter. Giovani Bernard showed his versatility catching 5 passes out of the backfield for 58 yards, and gives Wooderson a nice safety blanket. Wooderson also found his high school teammate Nick Roach on an explosive 41 yard streak for the longest passing TD on the day.

The Tar Heels will face a much more equal opponent next week when the Rutgers Scarlet Knights come to town.

Nice first win there dude, already seeing that connection pay off in college. Good luck against my boys next week, for some reason NCAA gives them some love in this game, i'll never understand. Much better than they should be. Keep em coming!

Rutgers Scarlet Knights
North Carolina Tar Heels

Despite a late offensive surge from Chas Dodd and the rest of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, the Tarheels hold on to win their second game of the season. The Heels defense picked up where they left off against James Madison, sacking Dodd 5 times in the first half and forcing two interceptions. Linebacker Kevin Reddick had a spectacular day with 7 tackles, 3 for loss, a sack, and an interception. Rutgers was held to just a single touchdown heading into the half.

Meanwhile, the UNC offense was moving, but struggling to end possessions in the endzone. David Wooderson was innacurate at first, but began finding his safety target out of the backfield in Gio Bernard. Despite many drives into the redzone in the first half, only one ended with a touchdown. Casey Barth however was able to drill three field goals to keep a two possession lead.

Late in the third quarter, the Heels were able to stretch their lead even more with a nicely thrown pass from Wooderson to Dwight Jones. Jones made several big plays earlier in the drive and ended with the most receiving yards for Carolina.

The Heels were in seemingly in control and cruising to victory midway through the 4th quarter when the Knights offense picked up strong. Receiver Mohamed Sanu broke off several big gains and ended a quick 82 yard drive in less than 2 minutes with a touchdown. On the following Heels possession, Wooderson was stripped by Steve Beauharnais. Chas Dodd found Brandon Coleman for a second touchdown with 47 seconds left on the clock, putting the Knights down now only by three. The attempted onside kick was recovered by Carolina and Wooderson knelt the remainder of the time away to survive a late game scare at home.

Carolina will face off against Virginia next week at home in the 'South's Oldest Rivalry'.

Virginia Cavaliers
North Carolina Tar Heels

Despite the wet and rainy elements, true freshman quarterback David Wooderson continues to show improvement under Mike Leach and the air raid based offense. Following a slow start yet again, the Heels offense exploded in the second and third quarters putting up 40 points against a (2-0) Cavaliers team that many favored to win this match-up.

Wooderson set a collegiate career high in touchdowns with 4, and spread the ball around well as four different receivers were on the end of each. Johnny Adams made two spectacular diving catches and recorded his first touchdown on the season, as well as Erik Highsmith. Nick Roach made the most of his time on the field in the third quarter and caught a 76 yard touchdown with his first snag of the game. Wooderson was under heavy pressure but managed to slip under a sack, giving Roach enough time to find himself wide open over the middle. The high school teammates seem to have a special bond and have linked for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 4 connections.

Much of Carolina's success through the air should be attributed to the strong rushing games from both Gio Bernard and A.J. Blue. They combined for over 150 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns.

Virginia's offense struggled in this one, and the Heels defense continues to play above their expectations. It was senior outside linebacker Zach Brown who led the way in this one with 4 tackles, 2 for loss, and an interception. Kevin Reddick and Tydreke Powell also added sacks, as the Tarheels make it three games in a row with at least three sacks.

Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco had difficulties with the wet ball and completed just 43% of his passes with 2 interceptions. Receiver Kris Burd was a bright spot for the Cavs however as he ended the game with 6 receptions for 133 yards and a touchdown and generally gave the Heels secondary trouble all game. The rest of the Cavs offense just couldn't keep up with Wooderson and the Tarheels, as Virginia loses their first of the season and in conference and North Carolina continues their now three game winning streak (all at home) and grab their first win in the ACC.

The Tarheels will make their first road trip of the season, as they head to Atlanta, GA next week to take on the (3-0) Paul Johnson lead Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the infamous triple option.

AROUND THE NCAA:
Week 4

Who’s Hot?

The now #2 Florida State Seminoles after knocking off Landry Jones and the previous #1 Oklahoma Sooners 39-17 on their home turf in Tallahassee. Redshirt junior quarterback E.J. Manuel was nearly perfect, throwing for 252 yards and 4 touchdowns, 3 of which were caught by Bert Reed, which was enough to earn him NCAA honors as player of the week.

Nick Foles and the Arizona Wildcats. After upsetting Oklahoma State last week, the Wildcats maintained their early season momentum with another huge win over conference opponent and #4 ranked Stanford, 38-28. Foles threw for 403 yards and 3 touchdowns, as early Heisman favorite Andrew Luck and the Cardinal could not keep up. Arizona deservedly moves up in the polls this week at #21.

Who’s Not?

Notre Dame. Fighting Irish Fans were anticipating a great game this week as rival #13 Michigan State came to town, but sophomore halfback LeVeon Bell wasn’t going to allow it. Bell ran for 155 yards on 29 carries with 3 touchdowns, and added a receiving touchdown from Kirk Cousins as well. The Spartans won the game handily 31-14, knocking Notre Dame out of the polls.

What to Watch For

#8 Oregon @ #21 Arizona. Can the #8 Ducks go into Tucson and beat the scalding hot Wildcats?

#2 Florida State @ #25 Clemson. Clemson enters the polls for the first time this season after knocking off Auburn. FSU is coming off a big win versus previous #1 Oklahoma but how will they fare on the road in Death Valley?

#14 Arkansas @ #1 Alabama. Alabama has taken over as the top team in the country but will face a tough Arkansas team boasting two of NCAA’s current leading rushers in Ronnie Wingo and Darren McFadden. How will Bama face off against their toughest opponent to date by far?

#20 Missouri @ #6 Oklahoma. Will the Sooners be able to bounce back after being knocked from their #1 spot against an undefeated Mizzou?
