2013 Season Preview

Screen Shot 2019-10-22 at 10.26.11 AM

The 2013 schedule looks much different for the Scarlet Knights then in years past. No longer does Rutgers play in the Big East as they earned the conference promotion after winning the title last season. With the promotion comes some much stiffer competition, something Rick Ross and co. wanted to do from the beginning.

With just 3 non-conference games opposed to the 4 in Big East play, Rutgers will open the season on the west coast, taking on Fresno State of the Mountain West, the first time Rutgers has head out west in quite some time. The Knights don't play another non-conference game until October 19th, when they face their rival Army, to close out a 3 game set, started back in 2011. Rutgers actually dropped Eastern Michigan from their schedule to play Army. Rounding out their non-conference schedule is a home game vs MAC opponent Kent St.

In conference play, Rutgers toughest game looks like it will be on the road vs #12 Virginia Tech, other than that they lucked out as some big time programs will travel north to Jersey. Florida State, #19 Miami, and Notre Dame will all head to Rutgers for their conference matchups.

Game Notes
For the first time since 2008 and just the second time ever these two teams match up. Five years ago in New Brunswick it was all Fresno State in a 24-7 win in which a young running back named Ryan Matthews would torch the Rutgers D for 163 yards. This go around Fresno State is led by their passing game and senior QB Greg Watson. Watson is making his first career start as he was the long time back up to Derek Carr.

The Fresno State running game will feature a first time starter as well in red-shirt junior Joshua Quezada, so it will be an interesting matchup vs the Rutgers defense that had to replace so many starters from last seasons team.

The Scarlet Knights will be led into the game by senior First Team All-ACC QB Chas Dodd. Dodd is looking to improve on his passed two season and take himself and Rutgers to the next level, their season clearly hinges on his performances. With Jawan Jamison gone into the NFL, its now Savon Huggins turn to man the backfield. The redshirt sophomore is a former 4-star recruit and can make an immediate impact if things go well.

Fresno State Key Players (Stats are from last season)
SR QB Greg Watson (89) - 5/13, 61 yds, 2 int

rJR HB Joshua Quezada - First career game

SR WR Jalen Saunders (89) - 42 rec, 692 yds, 7 TD
rSR WR A.J. Johnson (83) - 11 rec, 177 yds, 2 TD

SR SS Derron Smith (89) - 49 Total Tackles, 3 Int, 2 FF

Week 1, Season 3
August 24, 2013
Fresno, California

Offense
One of the biggest question coming into this season was how good Rutgers ground game could be now that Jawan Jamison is onto the NFL. Well, fans got their answer on Saturday afternoon when Savon Huggins led his team to a 29-24 win through rainy, wet conditions.

Huggins a red shirt sophomore making his first start, would run for 131 yards and two scores. His first score came on a beautiful 15 yard run where he dragged three Bulldog defenders into the end zone with him. His final score in the 4th quarter would be the eventual game winner, giving RU a 29-17 lead in the 4th quarter.

Senior QB Chas Dodd played turnover free football and threw for just under 300 yards and a score in the game. He connected with redshirt junior Brandon Coleman 7 times for 106 yards. His best performance of his career.

Fresno State fans can't seem to think what if? As their starting QB Greg Watson went down in the 2nd quarter with a strained tricep. His back up Brian Buller did a wonderful job filling in, throwing for 2 scores and almost leading his team back.

Buller would have two long scores in the game, a 43 yard strike to AJ Johnson which was reviewed but upheld, and a 38 yard dime to Victor Dean. The latter brought the Bulldogs to within 5 points, with over 4 minutes left in the game.

Rutgers could have put the game away earlier but the team started just 2/8 on their 3rd down conversions.

Fresno States run game was led by junior Joshua Quezada who began his career at BYU. Quezada took the ball 22 times for 64 yards in his first game at Fresno State.

Defense
The second biggest question coming into the season was how would Rutgers defensive secondary perform with a litany of new players. After one game it is a little tough to tell, though there is definitely some work to do.

Rutgers secondary didn't record an interception to open the season, after recording a school record 23 last season. Twice did they allow a Fresno State wideout get behind them for long scores, this with a back up quarterback in the game. Something that won't fly in the ACC for a very long time.

Leading the way on defense for Rutgers was Darrell Givens and Justin Mills. Givens would record a team high 8 tackles, while Mills recorded 2 sacks in his first career start for the Scarlet Knights.

Fresno State middle linebacker Ryan Boschma was a force with 7 tackles and 4 of them coming in the backfield.

Special Teams
Rutgers and Coach Ross may have to look into going for it on 4th down a lot more often as it seems their sophomore kicker Robby Harrell just doesn't have the leg needed for deep kicks. His long last season was just 42 yards with gusty winds in his favor.

Harrell would finish 3/4 on his kicks, but his miss from 49 yards is worrisome too many.

Fresno State kicker Garrett Swanson was perfect for the Bulldogs, hitting his only attempt from 35 yards, and nailing all 3 of his extra points.

Up Next
The Scarlet Knights make their ACC debut next week vs 1-0 Kansas State. K-State is coming off of a 38-17 home win over ACC foe Notre Dame.

Game Notes
Two of the newer members of the ACC square off this weekend as #25 Rutgers takes on Kansas State. The Scarlet Knights are making their ACC debut, while Kansas St. is in their second year in the conference. Kansas State is coming off of a conference win vs Notre Dame 38-17 to open up their season.

These two schools have only met once back in 2006 in the Texas Bowl and what a time it was for Rutgers. Not only was it the schools first bowl victory in a 37-10 win, but the likes of Ray Rice, Mike Teel, and Brian Leonard, were roaming the campus and had the Scarlet Knights ranked as high as #7 in the country.

Week 2, Season 3
August 31, 2013
Manhattan, Kansas

Offense
Rutgers offense was forced to punt 5 straight times on Saturday afternoon, the most ever under Coach Rick Ross. Chas Dodd struggled in finding receivers for most of the game and when he did the Scarlet Knights averaged just 8 yards a completion.

Rutgers had a chance to take an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter but a 4th and goal at the one was stuffed by the Kansas State D-Line. With the change of possessions at the 1, Rutgers would force a Safety within the next few plays.

Kansas State would score the first touchdown of the game, when JUCO transfer Jake Waters would find true freshman TE Cody Small on a short 1 yard TD score. Waters threw for 201 yards in the game and the lone score. Of his 21 completions he would find 8 different targets in the win.

The Rutgers run game only ran for 105 yards combined today but the unit kept Rutgers in the game all along. Savon Huggins broke free on a long 52 yard run to get RU inside the 10. Rutgers would score on the drive on an 8 yard reception from senior Jeremy Deering.

True freshman running back Chris Ball put Rutgers up 17-16 in the 3rd quarter with a 9 yard run, the freshman's first career score.

Leading the way for Kansas St. was receiver Tremaine Thompson who finished with 108 yards through the air. His 31 yard reception in the 4th quarter on a 3rd down help set up the go ahead field goal.

Like their passing game, Kansas St. spread the love out in the run game as 7 players saw carries, none more than DeMarcus Robinson. The 3rd string back led the way with 15 carries and 39 yards.

Rutgers seems to have an inability to score touchdowns in the red zone. Something that plagued the team during Coach Ross' first season.

Defense
Both teams played a turnover free game this afternoon. Kansas State was able too force Rutgers to go just 3/11 on 3rd downs and 0 for their first 7!

The only sack of the day was recorded by Wildcats Bo Tillman, who would force Rutgers to punt from their own 10 yard line.

Sophomore corner Patrick Johnson continues to improve for the Scarlet Knights as he tied for the team lead with 10 tackles in todays game.

Special Teams
It's rare that a kicker wins player of the game honors but Anthony Cantele did just that. The red shirt senior was 4/4 on the day including nailing a 57 yarder to open the scoring in the 3rd quarter, giving the Wildcats a 13-10 lead. Cantele totaled 11 of his teams 19 points.

For Rutgers it is now clear not being able to kick field goals from 45 yards+ is seriously hurting the team. Especially when the offense is struggling and cannot convert on 3rd downs, let alone 4th. Harrell didn't get an opportunity to kick today other then a single extra point attempt.

Up Next
Things won't get much easier for the Scarlet Knights as they welcome Florida State to SHI Stadium in New Brunswick. The Seminoles are coming off of a 31-24 loss at the hands of Notre Dame in South Bend.

Coming off of a disappointing 19-17 loss to Kansas State, things aren't going to get easier for Rutgers as they welcome the Florida State Seminoles to New Brunswick. This is the first time ever these two teams have met in football and what a match up it promises to be. The Seminoles are coming off of a season opening loss in South Bend 31-24, and they are led by the controversial QB Jameis Winston.

Along with Winston, Florida State boasts a dynamic running back duo with a pair of redshirt sophomores in Devonta Freeman and Karlos Williams. On defense the Seminoles bring a fearsome secondary consisting of Xavier Rhodes (who had 3 interceptions vs Notre Dame) and Antwon Smith. There is no doubt Rutgers will have to be on top of their game to win in this one. A win will provide a much needed boost in the eyes of the national audience.

Herbies Pick: Rutgers

Week 3, Season 3
September 7, 2013
New Brunswick, NJ

Offense
Rutgers offense was humming today at least for the first half, as the Scarlet Knights scored all of their 35 points in the first two frames. Savon Huggins ran for a career high 175 yards and two scores, while Chas Dodd added two throwing scores of his own, in a 35-32 Rutgers win.

The Scarlet Knights poured it on in the first half of play, scoring from every which way you can think of, minus defensively. Senior wideout Jeremy Deering got the scoring started with a 30 yard TD reception on the teams opening drive. Shortly after a FSU field goal, Savon Huggins would make it 14-3 with his first score on the day.

Despite taking the lead, Dodd would throw two interceptions in the first quarter, luckily for Rutgers, sandwiched in between was a Jameis Winston pick.

Scoring again, Huggins would make it 21-3 with a career long 72 yard TD run in the 2nd quarter. Huggins was touched once before switching directions and running around the pile for the long score.

Rutgers would build the score to 28-6 before Florida State would finally answer.

The Seminoles would have a couple long scores of their own despite the rainy conditions. Running back Devonta Freeman who ran for 153 yards in the game, broke free on an 80 yard TD run of his own, starting the Florida State comeback in the 2nd quarter.

Down 35-18 to open the 2nd half, WR Bobby Watson, a JUCO transfer for Florida State, would bring the "Noles to within 10 with a long 63 yard TD run. Watson would again make his presence known in the final quarter with a 10 yard scoring reception from Jameis Winston bringing his team to within 3.

Jameis Winston would get the ball back with a chance to tie or win the game with 3 minutes left, but would fumble on sack by Rutgers Michael Larrow.

Defense
Both defenses gave up a ton of yards today despite the swampy conditions. Florida State despite giving up so many points would force Chas Dodd interception in the first quarter. Gerald Demps and Jeff Luc were the aggressors.

One of the many pro prospects on Florida State's defense, Telvin Smith led all tacklers with 10 in the game, including a tackle in which Savon Huggins lost 6 yards.

For the Scarlet Knights it was freshman Roderick Watkins who had his best performance to date, with 9 tackles, 3 for loss. Michael Larrow, who forced the huge Jameis Winston fumble in the 4th quarter, recorded 2 sacks in the win.

Special Teams
Rutgers kicking woes continue as this time sophomore Robby Harrell missed short from just 40 yards out, granted it was raining. Coach Ross has said punter Anthony DiPaula may be called upon from here on out. Rutgers was just 1/3 on 4th down today.

Part of Rutgers first half explosion was thanks in part to Brandon Coleman who took a kick-off 97 yards for a TD. The longest in Rutgers history, longer than Mohamed Sanu's 93 yarder, two years ago. The return would make it 35-12 Rutgers and was their final points scored in the game.

Florida State kicker Jason Myers was 2/2 on the day hitting his longest kick of 43 yards. Florida State was 0/2 on 2-point Conversions, those 4 points would have given them the win.

Up Next
Rutgers, now firmly planted in the ACC after getting their first win, will head to Chapel Hill and face the 2-0 Tar Heels. Coming into this week the Tar Heels were receiving some Top 25 votes, though they fell just short.

Game Notes
Rutgers and UNC meet up in a big ACC Coastal matchup. Bigger then many people may actually realize. Rutgers comes in with a 2-1 (1-1) record after earning their first ACC win vs Florida State. The Tar Heels enter the contest at 2-0 (1-0), and just pulverized a Big 10 opponent in Minnesota 33-7. Rutgers is fighting to earn their way back into the Top 25, while North Carolina just missed out this week, falling a few votes short.

The last time these two teams met up was in 2011, Coach Ross' first year at the helm. Rutgers won that game in Chapel Hill 27-24. Now conference opponents, Carolina is much stronger with RB Giovani Bernard and Brynn Renner running the show in their senior seasons .
