2020 Season Review

2020 Season Review

With a solid first season in the books for the Houston Oilers, we'll take a look at how things fared for all members of the organization, from the players all the way up to the front office.

A Tale of Two Halves
The inaugural season for the Oilers started off pretty bleak, as the team dropped 6 out of its first 8 games. However, the team was able to bounce back and win 5 of its final 8 games to finish a respectable 7-9. Part of the early struggles can be attributed to QB play, which was bookended by Josh McCown who started off as poorly as could be, but finished the year off on fire. Meanwhile, PJ Walker, the local Roughnecks hero, had his own share of ups and downs through the middle of the season. Rookie Jalen Hurts got very few reps but was able to play the full final half of Week 17 and secure the teams final victory.

The standouts this season belong to rookies Jonathan Taylor and Chase Young, as well as Jadeveon Clowney. The team top two picks played like studs, with Taylor leading the league in rushing. Clowney, the teams top FA signing, had a great season alongside the draft's #1 pick in Young. Below is the full stat sheet for all key contributors to the team this year.

Team Statistics

Offense - HC/OC Josh McDaniels

McDaniels' unit finished the year 12th in total offense. Passing was the major concern for the unit as it finished 29th in yards and dead last in interceptions (38). Rushing wise the unit excelled, finished 2nd in total rush yards, with Taylor winning the rushing title. The team was efficient, finishing top-5 in 3rd-down conversions and redzone scoring, which helped propel it to 6th in scoring.

Overall: B

Defense - DC Rob Ryan

Ryan's unit could do only one thing this season, get after the quarterback. Outside of that the unit struggled on its way to finished dead last in total defense, passing yards allowed and scoring. Against the run the unit fared fine, finishing 22nd. Another area of struggle was creating turnovers, as the team ranked near the bottom in interceptions and forced fumbles.

Overall: D-

GM Performance

It's tough to rate the GM's performance after just one year, but let's take a look at the best and worst moves made by the front office.

Best Expansion Draft Picks
TE CJ Uzomah, DE Henry Anderson

Worst Expansion Draft Picks
DT PJ Hall, DE William Gholston

Uzomah and Anderson were the biggest contributors of those drafted. PJ Hall never played a down for the Oilers and Gholston spent most of the season banged up.

Grade: C

Best FA Signings
EDGE Jadeveon Clowney, CB Logan Ryan, OG Ron Leary, WR Braxton Miller

Worst FA Signings
None

Safe to say that the first Free Agency class was a success. The biggest one being the signing of Braxton Miller, an overlooked weapon that led the team in receiving. The QB selections were middle of the road but that was expected.

Grade: A

Best Draft Picks
EDGE Chase Young (1st), RB Jonathan Taylor (2nd), LB Khaleke Hudson (5th)

Worst Draft Picks
OL Josh Jones, LB Shaquille Quarterman

Young, Taylor, and Hudson all look to be longterm players for the Oilers. Meanwhile, Jones (3rd) and Quarterman (4th) account for subpar middle-round picks. Jones, who started at RT most of the season, was overwhelmed most of the time. Quarterman made the 53-man squad but did little before being signed to the Practice Squad and eventually being signed away by the Cleveland Browns.

Grade: B

Best Trade
None

Worst Trade
OL Forest Lamp

A 4th and 7th from this upcoming draft was given in return for Lamp, a slightly expensive price for his average performance at LG and C. Lamp was also signed to an extension following the trade and if his play doesn't improve this trade may look even worse.

Grade: D

Overall: B-

2020-21 End of Season Report

Browns Come Up Gold

MVP - RB Kareem Hunt 9 ATT 69 YDS 1 TD

Tampa Bay, FL -The Cleveland Browns are Super Bowl champions. No, you did not read that wrong. Heavy rains in the AM led to a sloppy field in the PM and it showed as both offenses struggled to do much outside of kicking field goals. With both teams notching four field goals a piece, it was the plays by Kareem Hunt that put the Browns over the top.

Hunt scored the games lone score on a 10-yard run. He didn't get a lot of touches, but he made the most of them, posting a 7.6 AVG per touch and picking up key third and longs that would otherwise have led to punts instead of getting Cleveland into field goal range.

Re: We Still Luv Ya Blue! || A Houston Oilers Expansion || Madden 20 GM Mode

Was expecting a 1-3 win season and top pick, pleasantly surprised by second half. Though this team is not near playoff caliber so I could have used the higher pick, but overall was a fun first season!

The Panther players were either traded to teams during expansion draft, or kept inside NFC South to strengthen the division.

Kinda tough replacing the team, but did enough Redskins as the relocation team for previous franchises. Also wanted the second Houston team to be NFC, so came down to ATL or CAR and ATL's stadium was deciding factor. Might keep Panthers alive in spirit as the defunct NFL turned XFL powerhouse team.
