The Coaching Career Of John Smith: An ECU Dynasty

It’s a new day for East Carolina. Coach John Smith has been hired to help bring ECU back to being a respectable football program. A hire that some people have said is downright horrifying, Smith has no experience at the college level.

What Smith does have, however, is the reputation of being one of the most feared high school coaches ever. Smith has a reputation of being fiery, cocky, and not afraid to fake a punt at any time.

However, in his last year coaching high school, Smith saw one of his key players go down. He struggled to replace this player, and that led to a miserable 6-4 record. His personality also rubs off negatively on recruits.

Smith had this to say at a press conference:

“I am going to take this team to a National Championship – I can guarantee you that much. WE WILL RUN THROUGH OUR OPPONENTS! WATCH OUT!”

House Rules:
John Smith can only use up to 450 points on each recruit do to his fiery personality, although his knack for scouting and finding talent will allow him to do full scouting.

I will not use cheese plays – I think that’s pretty cheap.

I also can’t leave ECU until I either (1) get fired or (2) win an AAC conference championship. I cannot assign ECU or any school that I may join to a new conference UNLESS we win a National Championship.

I will create a playbook in week one of each year that has removed all cheese/money plays and added in some cool plays and formations (fight song, monster, shovel option, HB Pass). And then that IS IT for the year, I don't care if the playbook doesn't fit my scheme because college football coaches don't just install new plays and run new schemes on a week to week basis.

I can't go after the un-recruited 5 and 4 stars. And 3 stars that are surrounding North Carolina are fair game after Week 8. I will also add all of the players I want preseason BUT then after the preseason I can only add up to 5 different players. It doesn't matter if they were already on my board.

I may only redshirt someone if they will seriously get VERY LITTLE playing time and not help the team at all.

This scrambler is a threat in and out of the pocket. A rare left handed QB, Ahlers, an 82 OVR, is going to have all of the tools that he needs to be successful. He wears the Number 12 after his idle, Tom Brady. Although he grow up in North Carolina, Ahlers still loves Tom Brady as a QB. In his Sophmore year, Ahlers still has a lot of potential to be filled.
2. Bryan Gagg

Gagg is a QB who doesn't do any one thing right. In fact, he gets a lot of things wrong. He isn't fast, nor is he a real threat in the pocket. The only way that he could get playing time is when Ahlers is injured or to chew the clock. Despite all of this, Gagg is a freshman who could garner some playing time in the future. We'll have to see.
3. Alex Flinn

After redshirting him this year, it'll be interesting to see how Flinn competes with Gagg for the Number 2 spot. He's someone who I have high hopes for. Although he's not very fast, he can get the job done. His agility is above average as well as his acceleration. He plays smart. He can put on a spin move when necessary and he can break a tackle. He can catch out of the backfield as an average receiver. Although he isn't amazing at any one thing, he's reliable and he can get the job done.

2. Trace Christian

A solid backup, Christian can fill the void when Pinnix gets tired. Like Pinnix, he's a balance between speed and power while not being amazing at either thing. He brings less to the table in each skill than Pinnix. As a Sophmore he could transfer, although he did redshirt earlier in his career. Look for him to get solid playing time for a backup.

A freshman for the Pirates, Mauney is all potential -- and nothing to show for it ratings wise. A speed RB, Mauney is all speed and no power. His speed could carry him into some formations and plays such as the wildcat and a jet sweep, although he won't get significant playing time. Mauney cannot catch to save his life, nor does he carry the ball very well. It will be interesting to see how he pans out.

The star WR for the Pirates, Farrier has the skillset to get it done. A speedster on the edge, Farrier can get past the defender and really make the defense pay for any little mistake. Since Ahlers is left handed, look for him to line up on the left side of the field. The key to him is to unlock that man to man by setting up the short pass -- and then burning them downfield. I'm super excited to play with him.

A possible breakout player for the Pirates, Proehl will get the job done through a mix of raw speed and catching ability. His route running is average, while his raw athleticism is still only a bit above average despite his above average raw speed. He needs to work on his awareness of the game and his Football IQ. His juke moves are average. Look for him to take the second WR spot behind the undisputed number one Farrier.

Omotosho offers above average speed for his 6'2"/180 frame. As a Junior Omotosho offers experience to a WR position that is filled with big shot, high risk, very talented prospects. His catching ability is a cause for concern, as he has below average catching. His ability to carry the football suggests that he could come in to play a wildcat or a jet sweep. Otherwise, Omotosho is a reliable target at the Number 3 spot for WR.

Snead is a stud. With 4 more years of eligibility left and already at a 75 OVR, there's no telling where this kid could end up. Hopefully he will turn into a star WR. Only time will tell.

Henley offers what Snead can't, above average raw speed. His athletic ability is that of Snead, although his general catching is worse. This kid still has a lot of room to grow, although it will be a tough journey. Hopefully he turns into something special, but for right now he's stuck on a team with to much WR depth. I hope to include him as much as possible, but it's going to be tough for him to find playing time.

Although he's sixth on the depth chart, that doesn't reflect his real skill. He has above average speed with good awareness. The rest of his game is below average except for his juke moves, which show flashes of being wipe out moves. I wish I could use this kid more and develop him through games, but he's sixth on the depth chart for a reason. I will most likely redshirt him next year for him to get the best out of his college career barring something unexpected. We'll see how I can get him into the gameplan.

7. Andre Pegues

As it turns out, he doesn't do anything else well. He's an average blocker, while having below average catching. Hopefully The Bird can make an impact this year as a Sophmore.

Hopefully we get to keep him, although a transfer to a school that will offer him playing time would be good for him.
