Yale Does It! Bulldogs Use Turnovers and Special Teams to Blowout ECU 45-13!

GREENVILLE, NC - It took a season and change, but the Yale Bulldogs (1-2) beat their first FBS opponent since moving up to FBS football last season this rainy afternoon in Greenville, NC as the Bulldogs took down the East Carolina Pirates in a surprising blowout, 45-13.

The Pirates (0-3) turned the football over six times and gave up two touchdowns on special teams, which ultimately proved to be their downfall.

Yale scored on the game's opening drive and never surrendered momentum. The Bulldogs led 24-0 at halftime, and when East Carolina scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the second half to cut the lead to 24-6, Thomas Moore returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead once again to 31-6. It was Yale's second special teams touchdown of the game; Marque Kearney scored on a 61-yard punt return late in the first half that pushed the lead to 24-0.

ECU cut the lead to 31-13 late in the third quarter, but the Yale defense bucked up and shut out the Pirates in the fourth quarter, and Thomas Kearney punched in two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to extend the margin of victory to 32 points.

The Yale rush offense was a revelation today considering the struggle that this team had running the football last season. Yale collectively ran the football 30 times for 213 yards, by far the most the Bulldogs have recorded since joining FBS football last season. Thomas Moore led the way with 152 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. Moore also scored a kickoff return touchdown. Marque Kearney also toted the rock seven times for 57 yards and scored on a punt return touchdown.

The Bulldogs didn't do a lot through the air as quarterback Nate Ellerbee only recorded 88 passing yards and a touchdown, but he also didn't make any mistakes and managed the game well. Thomas Brewer (2 Rec, 15 Yds, TD) caught Ellerbee's only passing touchdown.

Yale middle linebacker Chad Roberts had the game of his life. The senior recorded 14 tackles, including three tackles for loss, an interception, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. Adam East, Robert Carty, and Marcus Rust also recovered fumbles this afternoon for Yale and safety Joe Boyd recorded an interception.

"It was a really tremendous effort by our guys today," beamed Yale head coach Lee Williamson. "Sure, [East Carolina] made some mistakes, but we took full advantage. Our special teams play was the real difference maker. The kickoff return touchdown we scored in the third quarter right after they scored their first touchdown really sucked their momentum away and was huge for us."

Yale will host Arkansas State next Saturday.

Arkansas State Shuts Down Yale 45-0

NEW HAVEN, CT - Arkansas State (3-1) kept up their strong early-season play with a 45-0 shellacking over the Yale Bulldogs (1-3) this evening on the road.

The Bulldogs were coming off an impressive win of their own, a 45-13 victory over winless ECU on the road last Saturday, but tonight's game went about as poorly as it possibly could've. Quarterback Nate Ellerbee threw three first-half interceptions and the Bulldogs found themselves down by four touchdowns at halftime. They weren't able to close the gap at all in the second half, and failed to even put points on the board before time expired.

Arkansas State quarterback Josh Browning threw for 136 yards and three touchdowns. The redshirt junior also ran for 44 yards. Meanwhile, backup Preston Harris only completed two passes, but both were touchdowns and totaled 96 yards collectively. Darren Burns led the way in receiving for the Indians with four catches, 66 yards, and two touchdowns. Shawn Jones (1 Rec, 65 Yds, TD), Derrick Cole (2 Rec, 36 Yds, TD), and Jerome Hogan (2 Rec, 20 Yds, TD) also caught touchdowns. Chad Workman had a workman-like day for Arkansas State on the ground, totaling 22 carries for 130 yards and a score.

After erupting for over 200 yards rushing last week, Yale had much less success on the ground tonight. The Bulldogs rushed for just 77 yards, which is even less impressive when you consider that a significant portion of those yards came with the game well in hand against Arkansas State's second-stringers in the fourth quarter.

Yale is likely staring down the barrel of another embarrassing loss next week as the Bulldogs will travel to Raleigh, NC to take on the NC State Wolfpack out of the ACC.

Re: Yale Bulldogs (NCAA Football 07)

We're going to ignore that game against Arkansas State, haha, but what a win against East Carolina! Really stellar performance with getting off to the early lead and the two return touchdowns. That alone shows you have a couple more FBS wins in you this season, especially if you can get Moore going the way you did in that game.

Always a good thing when you get 2 scores on Special teams, but holy crap. 200 yds on the ground. I don't think you had 200 yds all season last year. Was ECU's rush defense really that bad, or did you change up the playbook?

Crazy to see you have such a great game against ECU and then such a stinker against Arkie State, but guess that is life. Was impressed you still managed 77 yds rushing despite losing 45-0.

Yeah, after that win, I'm definitely thinking we can pick up 2-3 more wins this season (minimum 1 against Harvard, anyways). If we can win a few games, that has to help in recruiting, too. Moore definitely look good, and that was encouraging, especially since Ellerbee, while fairly accurate, doesn't have the arm strength I really need to complete passes downfield (plus the recruiting corps is awful).

Nope, I didn't have 200 yards collectively all last season, I think that's correct.

I didn't really change up my playbook, it just started clicking. The offensive line is somewhat better, ECU's run defense (and defense in general) is pretty bad, and we got momentum early. Momentum is a big deal in this game (and probably overpowered), and can cause some wonky results sometimes. Then again, sometimes you get crazy stuff in college football, like when Ohio State lost by 29 points to a 6-win Purdue team a couple years back.

Wolfpack Shut Down Yale 38-0

RALEIGH, NC - The North Carolina State Wolfpack (4-0) kept their undefeated season humming along with a 38-0 shutout victory over the Yale Bulldogs (1-4) this Saturday afternoon in Raleigh.

The NC State defense completely smothered Yale's offense, holding the Bulldogs to just 40 offensive yards and three first downs. NC State garnered 388 yards of total offense, including 225 on the ground.

The Wolfpack didn't score in the first quarter, but they erupted for 28 second quarter points to put the game out of reach at halftime, 28-0.

Yale will look to get back on track next week at home against Army.
