Re: Cowher Power!: A Pittsburgh Steeler/Alternate NFL Timeline CFM (1993-???)

AFC West

[center]Denver Broncos

1991 Recap
12-4
Offense: 12th in yards/12th in scoring
Defense: 5th in yards allowed/3rd in points allowed

Dan Reeves enters year 12 as the head man for the Denver Broncos. In his first 11 seasons he guided the Broncos to 3 super bowl appearances and was one win away from a fourth in 1991. The Broncos will look to get over the hump in 1992 after losing to the Bills 10-7 for the AFC crown. Leading the offense will be John Elway, who is coming off his 4th Pro Bowl bid as an NFL quarterback. The offense will need to adjust quickly as George Henshaw will make his debut as an NFL play caller this season. On the defensive side of the ball the Broncos will continue to employ their 3-4 defense as Wade Phillips enters year 4 as the Broncos defensive signal caller.

Kansas City Chiefs

1991 Recap
10-6
Offense: 5th in yards/10th in scoring
Defense: 13th in yards allowed/7th in points allowed

Marty Schottenheimer enters the 1992 season coming off 2 straight trips to the AFC playoffs. Last season the Chiefs won their first playoff game since December of 1969. They will look to take the next step this season. They will do so with a new starting QB. Dave Krieg will be the signal caller for Schottenheimer's squad. In 1991, Krieg led the NFL with a career high a 65.6 completion percentage. The 34 year old, 3 time pro bowl QB will look to give the Chiefs offense some more pop in their passing game. On the defensive side of the ball the team will transition to a 4-3 front as Dave Adolph replaces Bill Cowher as the teams defensive play caller. Luckily for Adolph he will have players like OLB Derrick Thomas and DE Neil Smith at his disposal.

Los Angeles Raiders

1991 Recap
9-7
Offense: 23rd in yards/15th in scoring
Defense: 21st in yards allowed/12th in points allowed

Year 4 of the Art Shell era begins for the Raiders in 1992. Jay Schroeder returns as the starting QB for the Raiders as he continues to hold off 1991 first round pick Todd Marinovich. Joining him in the back field will be the 32 year old Eric Dickerson who rushed for just 536 yards in 10 games at a 3.2 clip for the Colts in 1991. It will be interesting to see if veteran Marcus Allen continues to be shelved if Dickerson's '91 was the accurate picture of his current physical skills. Shell's Raiders will look to finish stronger than they did in '91. After a 9-4 start the team lost its final 3 regular season games to fall to 9-7. The team followed its late season collapse with a 10-6 loss in Arrowhead Stadium to the rival Chiefs. On Defense the Raiders will continue to employ their 4-3 look. Townsend and Long will look to bring pressure while youngster Anthony Smith looks to build off his 10.5 sack sophomore season.

San Diego Chargers

1991 Recap
4-12
Offense: 13th in yards/21st in scoring
Defense: 19th in yards allowed/21st in points allowed

A new era begins in San Diego. Bobby Ross enters year 1 as the coach of the Chargers. Ross comes to the NFL after compiling a 31-26-1 record in 5 years at Georgia Tech. Tech went 11-0-1 in 1990 and won the Citrus Bowl. He provided a 39-19-1 record at Maryland over 5 seasons before that. Leading Ross' team will be Stan Humphries at QB. Incumbent starter John Friesz was lost for the season due to a knee injury during the pre-season. Humphries comes to San Diego via a trade from Washington where he served as Mark Rypien's back up. In his limited playing time he has compiled 1,106 yards with 4 TDs to 11 INTs. His go to targets are likely to be WR Anthony Miller, who made the pro bowl in 1989 and 1990 before a dip in his targets in '91, and swiss army knife Ronnie Harmon, who led the team with 55 catches in 1991. On defense the Chargers return leading tackler Junior Seau who compiled 129 of them in 1991. Leslie O'Neal was the team's sack leader with 9.0 in 1991. He will look to have more opportunities to rush the passer as he moves to DE to accommodate the team's transitions to a 4-3 defense.

AFC East

Buffalo Bills

1991 Recap
13-3
Offense: 1st in yards/2nd in scoring
Defense: 27th in yards allowed/19th in points allowed

The Bills enter '92 looking to avenge their their back to back Super Bowl losses. With the rule changes one can expect that the Bills' explosive offense could reach new heights behind one of the most dynamic QBs in Jim Kelley who enters year seven. Joining Kelly are the likes of Thurman Thomas, an all world back, and receivers like Andre Reed and James Lofton. Both of which registered 1,000 yard seasons last year. On defense the Bills hope to get a healthy Bruce Smith, who only appeared in 5 games in '91, and will return Cornelius Bennet and Darryl Talley at LB spots. In the secondary Nate Odomes will continue to solidify a unit that will experience some change. SS Henry Jones enters his first year as the starter at SS.

Miami Dolphins

1991 Recap
8-8
Offense: 7th in yards/6th in scoring
Defense: 25th in yards allowed/24th in points allowed

The Miami Dolphins enter the '92 campaign looking to remove the stench of last year. The Dolphins found themselves in a 3-5 whole over the first half of '91. A 5-1 six game stretch got them 8-6 with two games to go and control over the playoff hopes. The Dolphins lost their last two games by a combined 10 points to fall to 8-8. Those losses included a loss to the 4-12 Chargers that scored 38 points in the game and the rival Jets. The Dolphins will sport one of the best QBs to ever play in the NFL in Dan Marino as he returns for his 10th season. Marino averages a staggering 29.6 TD passes per season in his first 9 seasons, just to offer a snapshot of his greatness. Head Coach Don Shula is hoping the defense performs more consistently this season as the unit gave up over 30 points in 5 games last year. The same unit also held teams to under 20 points 10 times. If the unit can be more consistent, this team has a chance to make a run at the Bills to unseat them in the AFC.

New York Jets

1991 Recap

8-8
Offense: 6th in yards/11th in scoring
Defense: 12th in yards allowed/10th in points allowed

The New York Jets started off 1-3 and in those three losses they lost by a combined 16 points. The Jets battled back to get to 7-5, but three straight losses dropped them to 7-8. The Jets would claim victory on the final week of the season to finish at 8-8 including a season sweep of the Dolphins. On offense the Jets return Ken O'Brien at QB who made the Pro Bowl in '91. Head Coach Bruce Coslet will guide this team in his 3rd season. They have shown improvement in each of his first two seasons and Jets front office is hopeful that will continue.

New England Patriots

1991 Recap
6-10
Offense: 25th in yards/22nd in scoring
Defense: 26th in yards allowed/15th in points allowed

Head Coach Dick MacPherson enters year 2 as the Patriots head coach. MacPherson came to the NFL from building Syracuse into a successful college program. MacPherson didn't enter the NFL blind last season as he had served as a position coach prior. In his first year at the helm the Patriots won 6 games in '91 which was an improvement over their 1 win performance in '90. Hugh Millen returns at QB after completing over 60% of his passes and throwing for over 3,000 yards. The team hopes he can continue to grow in those area he cuts down on his 18 interceptions. On defense the Patriots will return a pair of solid linebackers in Vincent Brown and Andre Tippet.

Re: Cowher Power!: A Pittsburgh Steeler/Alternate NFL Timeline CFM (1993-???)

NFC Season Preview

NFC South

Carolina Panthers

1991 Recap
N/A
Offense: N/A
Defense: N/A

That Carolina Panthers enter the 1992 season as the one NFC expansion team. They will participate in the newly formed NFC South. Serving as the first head coach in franchise history is Chan Gailey. Gailey served as the OC in Denver in the 1989 and 1990 seasons where he helped lead the franchise to a Super Bowl berth. Most recently Gailey served as the head coach of the Birmingham Fire in the WLAF. The Fire won their division in '91 after rallying to win their last two games by a combined 52-21. They would end up losing in the semifinals to the Barcelona Dragons. The Panthers will employ an offense committed to running the ball and a 3-4 on defense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

1991 Recap
3-13
Offense: 26th in yards/26th in scoring
Defense: 11th in yards allowed/27th in points allowed

The Bucs are coming off a 3-13 record. Their 1991 performance cost former head coach, Richard Williamson, his job. Williamson turned in a 4-15 record in 19 games after replacing Ray Perkins. Stepping into the head job will be Sam Wyche. Sam Wyche led the Bengals to the Super Bowl in 1988, but followed that season up with 8-8 and 9-7 performances without recording a playoff win. In 1991 the bottom fell out on the Bengals as they finished 3-13. New owner Mike Brown chose to move on from Wyche, despite having the most wins and post season wins in franchise history, in a strange sequence of events. Wyche was brought partly due to his ability to develop QBs like Joe Montana and Boomer Esiason and the hope is he can work his magic on former #1 overall pick Vinny Testaverde (62.4 Rating/63 TDs/96 Ints).

New Orleans Saints

1991 Recap
11-5
Offense: 15th in yards/8th in scoring
Defense: 2nd in yards allowed/1st in points allowed

The Saints will move to the NFC South from the West in 1992. The Saints are coming off 5 straight seasons of .500 or better under Jim Mora, making it the most successful run in franchise history. The Saints also captured their first division title in team history last season as well. They enter '92 as the favorite to win the first ever NFC South title. They will be lead by their strong defense that recorded 50 sacks, 29 interceptions, and featured 3 pro bowlers. On offense Bobby Hebert returns as the starting QB. In the 5 seasons Hebert has started at least 8 games the team has posted a 46-20 record and his ability to lead the Saints the last season erased his 1990 hold out from fans' memories.

Atlanta Flacons

1991 Recap
10-6
Offense: 8th in yards/5th in scoring
Defense: 24th in yards allowed/20th in points allowed

Jerry Glanville's Falcons doubled their win total in 1991 from 1990 which game them both a winning season and their first 10+ win season since the 1980 campaign. The Falcons also brought a sense of fun and style and won in their way as they swept the 49ers and recorded a 5 game win streak in the second half of the season. On offense QB Chris Miller returns as the starter after his Pro Bowl season in '91 where he threw 26 TDs in 15 games. He will continue to target one of the most explosive WR tandems in football in Andre Rison and Michael Haynes who combined for 131 receptions, 2,098 yards, and 23 TDs. On defense, The Falcons will sport two tackling machines in the middle with Jesse Tuggle and Jesse Solomon. Tuggle has had led the league in tackles in each of the last two seasons. In the secondary the Falcons sport one of the most exciting and best Corners in the league. Deion Sanders has made an immediate impact for the Flacons from the minute he stepped into the building. In his first 3 seasons, Sanders has recorded 14 interceptions and 6 TDs between interceptions and kick game returns. The Falcons look poised to compete with the Saints for the NFC South title.

Re: Cowher Power!: A Pittsburgh Steeler/Alternate NFL Timeline CFM (1993-???)

NFC West

San Francisco 49ers

1991 Recap
10-6
Offense: 3rd in yards/3rd in scoring
Defense: 6th in yards/4th in points allowed

Despite winning 10 games the 49ers found themselves in unfamiliar territory as they failed to make to the playoffs after finishing 3rd in West. The two teams that finished ahead of them are now in the South. Unfamiliarity was the theme of the 1991 season for the Niners as they also were without future HOFer Joe Montana. Montana tore a tendon in his elbow during the preseason last season. Steve Young stepped in and posted a 101.8 QB rating while showing a lot of mobility. Behind Young, Steve Bono also started 6 games and guided the Niners to a 5-1 record while recording an 88.5 rating. He will start the season as the #2 once again behind Young as Montana continues his rehab as we enter week one of 1992. The QB position looks to be set in San Fran regardless of Montana's status going forward. On defense the 49ers once again look to be strong, but will have to have guys step up. Charles Haley was traded to Dallas due to clashes with Head Coach George Seifert. Replacing him will be Tim Harris who enters the '92 season with 58 career sacks (He recorded a career high 19.5 in '89 with the Packers). The 49ers will also need their younger players to continue to develop on defense to help them get back to the post season.

Los Angeles Rams

1991 Recap
3-13
Offense: 18th in yards/24th in scoring
Defense: 23rd in yards/27th in points allowed

The Rams enter 1992 with a new head man in charge. Chuck Knox enters his second stint as the Rams' head man. He previously served as head coach from 1973-1977 before stints with the Bills and Seahawks. He guided each team to the playoffs. Knox's first task will to improve the defense that recorded only 17 sacks as a team last year. Kevin Greene tied for the team with only 3 of them. He recorded at least 13 in each of the prior 3 seasons. On offense Jim Everett returns as the starting QB after a disappointing 1991 where he threw almost twice as many interceptions as he did touchdowns. The Rams will look to make a quick turnaround with 2 of the top 3 division teams no longer in the division.

Phoenix Cardinals

1991 Recap
4-12
Offense: 27th in yards/27th in scoring
Defense: 16th in yards/22nd in points allowed

At the midway point of the 1991 season the Cardinals found themselves at 4-4 and in contention for the NFC playoff race. The Cardinals then dropped their last 8 games and 4 of them were by 20+ points. Head Coach Joe Bugel made a name for himself guiding the explosive offense Redskin offense of the 1980s as Joe Gibbs' OC. That has not parlayed itself into success in Phoenix as the Cardinals have failed to finish in the top half in the league in yards or points in Bugel's first 2 seasons. Chris Chandler enters week 1 as the starter after joining the team midseason last year. The hope is a full offseason with the club will help create stability for him and the offense. Johnny Johnson looks to guide the ground attack once again in '92. The former pro bowler put up 666 yards in 1991 after making the Pro Bowl as a rookie. On defense the Cards will continue to employ 3-4 defense. On the edges the Cardinals sport Ken Harvey and Freddie Joe Nunn who look to continue to give the Cardinals solid play. Aenas Williams and Tim McDonald look to continue to give the team stellar play on the back end. Williams broke onto the scene as a rookie while McDonald made the Pro Bowl at SS. The Cards will look to make a jump this to justify keeping Bugel at the helm. The move from the East, where 3 every other team finished .500 or better, to a depleted West should also help.

Seattle Seahawks

1991 Recap
7-9
Offense: 21st in yards/20th in scoring
Defense: 8th in yards/8th in points allowed

1992 will be a year of transition for the Seahawks. They move from one successful coach in Chuck Knox to another in Tom Flores. Flores enters his Seattle tenure with a .610 winning percentage where he had 8 winning seasons in 9 years and won 2 Super Bowls as the Raiders leader. After a 5 year break he was lured back into the game. The Seahawks will also be without their all-time leading passer in Dave Krieg as he will be throwing passes for the Chiefs. In years past, the Hawks would have to face off against their former signal caller but Seattle will be playing in the other conference. The Seahawks will round out the newly shaped NFC South. Kelly Stouffer will start the season as the starter with Stan Gelbaugh and last year's first round pick Dan McGwire behind him. On defense the Seahawks had a top 10 unit in 1991. They will need the unit to continue to be strong to be competitive in '92. The unit will be anchored by pro bowler DT Cortez Kennedy who has the tools to be a dominant force in the Pacific northwest.

Re: Cowher Power!: A Pittsburgh Steeler/Alternate NFL Timeline CFM (1993-???)

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys

1991 Recap
11-5
Offense: 9th in yards/7th in scoring
Defense: 17th in yards/17th in points allowed

Head Coach Jimmy Johnson enters his 4th season as the leader of America's team. After only winning one game in '89 they improved to winning 11 in '91. This quick turnaround has been driven by a youth movement as the Cowboys look to have been nailing the NFL draft. In '89 they found their QB in Aikman, who rewarded the Cowboys with a Pro Bowl performance last year, they pulled off a draft and trade a round later with OG Steven Wisniewski that netted them one of the most promising FBs in the game in Moose Johnston and adding more capital. They landed Stepnoski at center and Tony Tolbert along the DL. In 1990 the Cowboys found their franchise RB in Emmitt Smith, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie. They also found guys like Jimmie Jones at DT and Kenneth Gant in the secondary. They also added TE Jay Novacek as a Plan B signing. He rewarded the team by being a 2nd team All-Pro in '91. Last season the Cowboys struck gold by finding talented players that will either start or contribute heavily this season in guys like: DT Russell Maryland, WR Alvin Harper, LB Dixon Edwards, DT Leon Lett, and CB Larry Brown. The Cowboys followed up the homerun draft this season with guys like CB Kevin Smith, who will be in the rotation of the secondary, and LB Robert Jones who won the Mike LB position in camp and will be a week 1 starter. In the second round the Cowboys drafted talented players in WR Jimmy Smith and S Darren Woodson who will fight for playing time. The Cowboys also added stud pass rusher Charles Haley from the Niners. These young Cowboys look to build off their first playoff season since 1985 by being a legitimate Super Bowl contender.....it helps that they split last seasons series with the eventual Super Bowl champs.

Washington Redskins

1991 Recap
14-2
Offense: 4th in yards/1st in scoring
Defense: 3rd in yards/2nd in points allowed

The Redskins enter 1992 riding the high of a Super Bowl Championship. In '91 they were one of the most dominant teams in Super Bowl history as their point differential almost doubled the second place team. Rypien returns as the starter for the 1992 season after coming off is best season as a pro where he threw for 28 TDs and posted a QB rating of 97.9. The Posse returns as his pass catchers as they look to continue their high level of play. Head Coach Joe Gibbs, who has won 3 Super Bowls with 3 different QBs, will look to join rare company with a 4th ring as the team attempts to defend their title. On defense CB Darrell Green, who is still one of the fastest players in the league, will look to add to his 29 career interceptions and add to his 5 Pro Bowl trips.

New York Giants

1991 Recap
8-8
Offense: 16th in yards/19th in scoring
Defense: 7th in yards/12th in points allowed

It can be hard for fans to embrace the man replacing a legend.....dropping 3 of your last 4 games to finish 8-8 and failing to make the playoffs is not a recipe to make it happen. Head Coach Ray Handley enters year 2 as the man replacing Bill Parcells. Handley served as the Offensive backs coach before being named the head man. Phil Simms returns as the starter after serving as a back up in 1991. Jeff Hostetler will serve as his back up. On defense Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks return on the edges. The two combined for 11 sacks while DL Leonard Marshall led the way with 11 himself. These three will look to bring more pressure to help the defense look closer the 1990 dominant version of the Giants.

Philadelphia Eagles

1991 Recap
10-6
Offense: 25th in yards/18th in scoring
Defense: 1st in yards/5th in points allowed

Head Coach Richie Kotite enters his second season as the Eagles head man. In '91 the Eagles finished 10-6 in the perhaps the deepest division in football. Their success was powered by the defense behind names like Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, Seth Joyner, Eric Allen, and Jerome Brown. That cast will return outside of Jerome Brown, who was tragically lost this summer. The Eagles struggled on offense after the loss of their trigger man in week 1. Cunningham was the Bert Bell Award winner for the 2nd time in 3 seasons as he threw for 3,466 yards, 30 TDs, and posted a rating of 91.6. He also ran for 942 yards and 5 scores. His return will give the Eagles a massive boost. Joining him will be the recently acquired Herschel Walker who ran for over 800 yards and 10 TDs last season. The Eagles look poised to compete in the toughest division in football against the defending champs, the rising Boys, and the G-men who are only 2 years removed from their own title. Will the NFC East once again house the Super Bowl champion?

Re: Cowher Power!: A Pittsburgh Steeler/Alternate NFL Timeline CFM (1993-???)

NFC North

Green Bay Packers

1991 Recap
4-12
Offense: 24th in yards/22nd in scoring
Defense: 10th in yards/18th in points allowed

The Green Bay Packers moved on from Coach Lindy Infante, who failed to make the postseason in his 4 seasons, after a 4-12 campaign that featured 9 losses in their first 11 games. Replacing him is Mike Holmgren, who served as the OC for the 49ers from 1989-1991. They finished no worse than 3rd in points scored and no lower than 8th in yards gained during his tenure. The Packers hope he can work that magic that helped Joe Montana and Steve Young in Green Bay. Returning as starter will be Don Majkowski, who has struggled since his Pro Bowl nod in '89. Joining the QB room this season is young QB Brett Favre. The 23 year old was an early 2nd round pick by the Falcons, but things didn't seem to work out for him there. He was involved in a competition for the starting gig this summer, but Holmgren has opted to lean on Majkowski's experience. Whoever plays QB will be fortunate to target WR Sterling Sharpe. Shapre has been a stud to start his career and has racked up 281 receptions for over 4,000 yards over his first 4 seasons. On defense the Pack will lean on players like SS LeRoy Butler, OLBs Tony Bennett and Bryce Paup, NT John Jurkovic, and '92 1st rounder CB Terrell Buckley.

Detroit Lions

*Fun Fact: Sanders scored on this play

1991 Recap
12-4
Offense: 17th in yards/9th in scoring
Defense: 15th in yards/11th in points allowed

The Detroit Lions captured the final NFC Central title by winning the final 6 games of the regular season to finish the season 12-4. They hope an encore performance could propel them to the first ever NFC North title. Sanders continued to be one of the elite backs in the league capturing his 3rd First Team All-Pro title in 3 years! At QB Rodney Peete returns from injury to be the starting QB. Erik Kramer, who QBed the Lions to a 6-2 record, returns to be the primary back up. Former 7th overall pick, Andre Ware rounds up the room as the team continues to hope for his development within their Run-and-Shoot offense. On defense the Lions will lean on rookies like Robert Porcher and Tracy Scroggins up front. They will also need veterans like Chris Spielman, George Jamison, and Bennie Blades to lead the way.

Chicago Bears

1991 Recap
11-5
Offense: 11th in yards/14th in scoring
Defense: 4th in yards/9th in points allowed

The '91 Bears put forth another strong defense performance. Their play helped the Bears win 10+ games and make the postseason for the 7th time in 8 seasons. Unfortunately the Bears' season came to an end at Solider Field at the hands of the upstart Cowboys. Former 1st round QB Jim Harbaugh returns as the starter after throwing for career highs in yards and TDs. It will be interesting to see how his relationship with Mike Ditka develops this season as the two have butted heads in the past. It will also be interesting to see how long a leash Ditka gets this year after many comments he made last season about a lack of talent to work with despite winning 11 games. On defense the Bears still sport some big names like LB Mike Singletary, DE Richard Dent, DTs William Perry and Steve McMichael, along with others. The defense will be looked to once again be the calling card for the Bears.

Minnesota Vikings

1991 Recap
8-8
Offense: 10th in yards/13th in scoring
Defense: 14th in yards/16th in points allowed

1991 marked the end of Jerry Burns' time as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. He leaves as the second winningest coach in Viking history. Replacing him will be Dennis Green. Green comes to Minnesota with a combination of NFL position coach (49ers WRs 86-88) and college head coaching experience. Most recently he served as the Stanford HC where he capped his tenure with an 8-4 bowl bid season. Leading the Viking offense will be QB Rich Gannon, RB Terry Allen, WRs Anthony and Cris Carter (who has saved his career in Minnesota), and 6 consecutive time Pro Bowl TE Steve Jordan. Jordan has caught 287 balls for almost 3,900 yards during this run. On defense the Vikings sport on of the more talented defensive lines in all the NFL. Chris Doleman, Henry Thomas, Al Noga, and John Randle will be the driving force for the unit in 1992. The Vikings will look to gain ground in the new NFC North as they chase the Lions and Bears.
