My Offseason assessment
I was fortunate to have Ben Roethlisberger return for one final season. Hence no activity at quarterback. I have my draft board ready and unless there is a quarterback I really like, I won’t be taking one and view Mason Rudolph as the starting quarterback going forward after Roethlisberger due to his Week 13 performance on the road In Buffalo (ENTER STATS).
I was happy to let Bud Dupree walk, seeing enough from Alex Highsmith during the season. Likewise, I plan on starting Cameron Sutton on the outside and replacing Joe Haden. At the time of writing, I haven’t closed the door on Haden returning. I’m not going to give him more money than Sutton when he would be starting in the slot. I did lose Mike Hilton. I will be looking for a cornerback to replace him. That was a big loss, but thanks to leading the league in sacks and generating enough pressure, I decided to re-sign Juju Smith-Schuster over Hilton and Dupree.
I let James Conner walk, as I intend to roll with Benny Snell as my feature back. He started one game (against Baltimore) and had one of two 100 yard performances of the season. James Conner rushed for over 100 yards in the season finale, but I wasn’t content with him going forward.
I traded for Leighton Vander Esch because of 3 reasons: 1) He has been injury prone in Dallas, he dislocated his ankle and missed 6 games in 2020. He has regressed to a 78 overall from his high in week 17 in Madden 19. 2) Pittsburgh scouted him heavily before the draft. He was high on our draft boards 3) I let Vince Williams go, I didn’t believe Robert Spillane is the full-time starter at that position. I have the cap space moving forward to sign him, Watt and others. I feel comfortable with Highsmith/Bush/Vander Esch/Watt combo in my 3-4.
I traded for Bryce Love to be my scat back but more importantly my returner. I let Ray-Ray McCloud go as he was asking way too much for little in return.
I managed to re-sign Villanueva on the cheap in free agency. He got no offers so, he’s back for at least another season. Mike Dunn was my only signing who would start at a new position (LG). However, LT, LG and C are huge holes which needs filing in the upcoming draft.
