BROWNS
Browns Complete Promising Preseason

Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter

September 2nd, 2007

CLEVELAND -- The Cavs just made the NBA finals and the Indians are rolling, for the first time in long time Cleveland sports seem to be in a good place. Will the luck transfer over to the Browns?

Fresh off of a not-so competitive quarterback battle with Derek Anderson, Charlie Frye will enter this season as the Browns' starting quarterback. Frye clearly demonstrated that he was more comfortable with the offense than Anderson, and was more consistent in delivering the ball to our primary playmakers. The big question regarding Frye will be how well he's able to close out a game. Last year, Frye was known for making horrible decisions at the end of games.

However, a lot of the attention of Browns fans is focused on one man, Brady Quinn. The Browns moved up in the draft to acquire Quinn, a highly rated quarterback from Notre Dame. Quinn played in a pro-style system which should translate well to the NFL. Quinn made an immediate impact in the preseason, seeming to give the Browns momentum every time he stepped onto the field.

This offseason the Browns went out and got the man that has broken the hearts of many Browns fans: Jamal Lewis. The former Raven broke the single-game rushing record several years ago against Cleveland. Lewis's production has dropped off the past couple of years but after a knee surgery, he claims to be in the best shape of his life. Lewis is hoping to prove to the league that he's still a number one back.

After letting Dennis Northcutt free in the offseason, the Browns replaced him with veteran receiver Tim Carter. Carter did not record a single reception in the preseason, as the same type of injuries that have followed him throughout his career continued to show up. That may not be such a big issue, except for the fact that he's entering our season as our third receiver, behind Braylon Edwards and Joe Jurevicius. Kellen Winslow will almost act as our third receiver this year and will probably line up on the field in many of the same ways that Dallas Clark of the Indianapolis Colts does.

On defense, last season the Browns signed Ted Washington a 38-year-old tackle to plug the middle of the line. As the season progressed, the defensive line was still a major liability, the Browns still weren't able to make significant progress over the offseason. In last year's draft, the Browns drafted three new linebackers: Kamerion Wimbley, D'Qwell Jackson, and Leon Williams. With all three entering their second seasons, they form one of the deepest linebacker cores in the league.

Despite some positives on defense, the Brown's outlook this season doesn't look great. Many are predicting them to be the worst team in the league.

Browns Name Team Captains

Phil Dawson practices kicking the ball during training camp.

Ted Washington, Phil Dawson and Jamal Lewis Named Captains

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Today Browns head coach Romeo Crennel came out and announced the captains ahead of Sunday's game against the Steelers. The biggest takeaway is that Crennel was looking towards veteran leadership instead of elevating young guys like Kellen Winslow.

Phil Dawson has been apart of the Browns organization since the team returned, his elevation to Captain was something many kickers don't get to experience. Dawson is a top 10 kicker in the league and with a team like the Browns, he should see plenty of action.

Jamal Lewis is a big surprise, the 28-year-old running back is a first-year Brown who has spent the majority of his career beating up on the Browns. On this young Brown's offense, however, Lewis will be the second oldest player. Lewis has reportedly been fired up since leaving the Ravens, looking to prove he still deserves a spot as one of the better backs in the league.

Lastly, Ted Washington coming into his 17th NFL season, the veteran will be 39 years old. Washington had his best season in 9 years last season. Somehow playing like one of the best nose tackles in the league despite being nearly twice the age of some of his colleagues.

With such a young team, Romeo Crennel's decision to stick with the vets this season seems like a smart one. Some experts predict the Browns could be in the mix in many games this season while others predict a rough year. Relying on guys who have been there could be the key to get the best out of the team.

Is JaMarcus Russell the Next Great?

CLEVELAND (AP) -- After a long holdout and contract dispute, the Raiders inked a deal with what could be their quarterback for the next fifteen years. Russell is possibly the most physically talented quarterback prospect since John Elway. He's 6-foot-6, 260 pounds with an arm that makes most QBs look like the kid on the playground.

However, hidden behind Russell's immense physical talent are a couple of major red flags. For starters, as recently as last summer's training camp, Russell was engaged in a fierce quarterback battle with Matt Flynn. There were rumors that Russell was gone to the NFL at the end of the season no matter how the year went, simply, because he was unsure that he'd be able to hold onto the starting job again.

Opinions are surely mixed on the QB, but one thing is for sure wherever he goes attention follows.

I cannot wait to see what you build here. Can you turn Quinn into the savior the Browns thought he would be?

Browns No Match for Steelers
September 9th, 2007

CLEVELAND -- For both the Steelers and Browns this game was a clear measuring stick game. Last season the Steelers struggled after winning the Superbowl and hoped this year they'd shape into form. For the Browns they made some major offseason additions hoping they'd fix the teams problems.

For the Browns, their problems showed up quickly, after a three and out on the first play on defense they gave up a 71-yard rushing touchdown to Willie Parker. Throughout the game, rush defense would be a problem for the Browns. At one point Willie Parker was averaging 8 yards per carry in the third quarter. Parker finished the game with 165 yards rushing for the day.

On offense the Browns were struggling as well, Jamal Lewis ran for 56 yards on 19 carries, not able to find a hole to run through all game. Charlie Frye struggled to connect with his receivers. Frye's completion percentage was barely above 40% and the Browns offense frequently found itself in three and out situations.

For the Steelers their rush attack was so potent they hardly threw the ball, Ben Roethlisberger only had to throw 18 times but he completed on 13 of them for 148 yards. Including a 22-yard touchdown pass to Najeh Davenport in the second quarter.

With 50 seconds left in the half, the Browns started to have their first successful drive. Fyre was able to connect with multiple receivers to get it to within the 30, if the Browns would've scored it would've made it a one-score game going into the half. However, a Frye pass was intercepted by Ricardo Colclough who proceeded to take it to back thirty yards, setting the Steelers up for a field goal.

In the second half not much changed, the Steelers were able to continue to drive up the field and the Browns couldn't get anywhere on offense. Kellen Winslow was the Browns leading receiver with only 30 yards.

Ted Washington was one of the few bright spots for the Browns, the 39-year-old was able to record seven tackles. Stopping the run multiple times throughout the game.

At the end of the game, the Browns trotted out rookie quarterback Brady Quinn too much applause by what remaining Browns fans were there. Quinn however, did not get anything going for the Browns. On four pass attempts, he only connected with one receiver. His final pass attempt was intercepted by James Farrior who took it back 61 yards for a touchdown as the seconds trickled out.

(Authors Note, Apologize for no detailed statistics, I'll have them week 3 and beyond)

Thanks for the comment, we'll see if Frye keeps playing bad I might have to throw Quinn into the fire.
