 Arkansas State Survives Shootout with South Alabama MOBILE, Ala. - Arkansas State moves to 5-2 after surviving an insane shootout with the South Alabama Jaguars, 43-42. The story of Arkansas State for this game has been the same as it has been all year. Turnovers keeping teams in the game and Arkansas State's offense finishing games off in the fourth. After the game starts with a few punts back and forth, Arkansas State's offense has a few big plays once again but looking for a big play and Layne Hatcher is intercepted by Keith Gallmon who has a pretty nice return to the 50 yard line, luckily Hatcher stops him from scoring a touchdown. South Alabama can't capitalize and punt it away, but pin Arkansas State deep. Arkansas State try to fight out of the hole, but Hatcher is intercepted for the second time, this time by Devin Rockette at the 17 yard line. The South Alabama defense is known for causing turnovers and it's showing here. South Alabama's offense squanders the chance however as they drive down to the goal line and Caleb Bonner intercepts Desmond Trotter at the 3 yard line! Being trapped deep in their own territory proves too much for Arkansas State as Hatcher is sacked in the endzone for a safety, putting the first points on the board and South Alabama is up 2-0. After punting it back and forth. South Alabama get a good return and a 32 yard pass that sets them up for a 35 yard field goal to get their first offensive score to make it 5-0. To cap off the first quarter, Hatcher throws his third interception and it's clear he's not in the right mindset today, forcing passes that have no reason to be forced. After a big 25 yard pass and a few short runs, Trotter finds Kawaan Baker for a 6 yard touchdown pass to put South Alabama up 12-0. Bonner comes in for Hatcher and immediately completes two big passes to Jonathan Adams Jr. Unfortunately a couple of bad incompletions forces a 40 yard field goal from Blake Grupe. 12-3 South Alabama. South Alabama's offense has found their groove and drive down the field with ease and punch it in with a 1 yard touchdown run by Carlos Davis to make it 19-3. South Alabama's defense is smothering this offense and despite a big 4th and 3 conversion, Arkansas State can't even get into field goal range and have to punt it away. After trading a couple more punts, Trotter finds Davis on a 29 yard touchdown pass to make it 26-3 for South Alabama and this game has taken a nose dive for Arkansas State. But on the ensuing kickoff, Jamal Jones returns it 98 yards for a touchdown and breathes some life back into the Red Wolves. Then a 2 point conversion on a Marcel Murray rush makes it 26-11! Arkansas State forces a three and out and their offense has it with 27 seconds left in the half. They have some momentum and hope to get something going into the half. Unfortunately Arkansas State can't get anything before half and run out the clock. After forcing a punt on the opening possession, Arkansas State facilitates a great drive, gets into the redzone for the first time today and Jamal Jones scores his second touchdown of the day, this time on offense to make it 26-18 and now the game is in reach for the Red Wolves. Later, South Alabama takes advantage of a three and out with three big 20+ yard throws from Trotter to Baker including a 21 yard touchdown pass to make it 33-18. The third quarter finishes off with both team punting the ball. The Red Wolves struggle to drive downfield but Adams Jr. gets wide open deep and Bonner hits him, but Adams steps out at the 12, negating a possible touchdown. On the next play, Bonner hits Paul short, and Paul fights his way to the endzone for a 12 yard touchdown. But Bonner misses a wide open Adams in the endzone for the 2-point keeping it a 2 possession game, 33-24. Arkansas State's defense continues to hold South Alabama, but Arkansas State has 6 minutes left in the fourth and have to work fast. Bonner makes his first big mistake of the game and throws an interception to Tre Young who returns it to the Arkansas State 26. South Alabama only kick a field goal which leaves it a 2 possession game with 5 minutes left, 36-24. Bonner converts a huge fourth down pass to Adams Jr. and follows it up with a 45 yard bomb to Reed Tyler. They cap off the drive with a 5 yard touchdown pass to Green to make it 36-31 South Alabama with 4 minutes left. Instead of trying to run out the clock, South Alabama elects to pass and Trotter pays the ultimate price, throwing an interception to Antonio Fletcher who takes it to the South Alabama 24! Arkansas State has a chance to take the lead. On the drive, Bonner finds Adams Jr across the middle for a 15 yard touchdown and Arkansas State takes the lead! Once again they cannot convert the 2 point conversion however and they remain up 37-36 with just under 3 minutes left. Trotter is able to drive South Alabama down the field with a few big passes including a 32 yard touchdown pass to Jalen Tolbert to make it 42-37 South Alabama with 1:47 left. Arkansas State has all three timeouts left. Bonner starts the drive with a short dump off pass to Murray but Murray extends it to a 15 yard gain. Bonner then hits Paul for 41 yards down the middle of the field to get deep into South Alabama territory! Bonner finds Brandon Bowling on a 3rd down to get to the goal line with 30 seconds left and they punch it in with Murray but are unable to make it a field goal game and miss the 2 point once again. It's now 43-42 Arkansas State with 18 seconds left. South Alabama have all three timeouts to get down the field. They try a screen but are unsuccessful and are going to need more than that. With 8 seconds left they're at their own 35. Trotter bombs the ball deep all the way to the endzone, but no one is there to get it! Arkansas State wins! Arkansas State Make Second Half Comeback to Put Away UL-Monroe JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas State started the game slow, but were able to put away UL-Monroe 44-37 on Saturday. Logan Bonner made his first start of the season but failed to live up to expectations as he would throw four interceptions and be replaced with Layne Hatcher who would finish off the game. The turnover woes seem to continue for Arkansas State no matter what. It's the blackout game for Arkansas State as they wear their all black jerseys but it's a white out as we get a rare Arkansas snowfall for this game. The Arkansas State offense kicks the game off but can't convert on a third and short and are forced to punt. After a UL-Monroe fumble, Arkansas State is forced to punt it away again. UL-Monroe drives easily down the field once again but a sack and a penalty push them to a 51 yard field goal attempt by Hughes and he misses! Arkansas State gets the ball at their own 34. Short passes prove successful for Bonner as Arkansas State starts driving down the field but a miscommunication between receivers allows Jabari Johnson to pick off Bonner and stop their momentum short. UL-Monroe drives down the field and cap it off with a 3 yard TD pass from Jeremy Hunt to Lamm to put UL-Monroe on the board, 7-0. Bonner is able to have Arkansas State drive down the field with some short passes and a couple bigger ones. But the drive is once again stopped short with an interception as Bonner is picked off across the middle by Hunter Smith. The Arkansas State defense finally steps up and forces a three and out and Arkansas State gets the ball back at the 50 yard line. Arkansas State is able to drive down to the 5 yard line once again but Bonner throws late to the flats and Johnson picks him off once again and returns it all the way for a pick six to make it 14-0, UL-Monroe. Bonner remains out there for the ensuing drive with three and a half minutes left in the half. Bonner runs an amazing offense and even throws a 36 yard bomb to Jonathan Adams Jr. before throwing a 9 yard touchdown to Dahu Green on a fade route to make it 14-7. The defense is struggling in this one however as Hunt finds Pederson for 33 and then Jonathan Hodoh for a 36 yard touchdown pass to make it 21-7. Bonner isn't done yet as he throws two bombs, a 42 yarder to Brandon Bowling and a 25 yarder to Adams Jr., before finding Jamal Jones out of the backfield for an 8 yard touchdown pass to make it 21-14 with a little over a minute left before half. The defense stands tall and gets the offense the ball back with a chance to tie before half. Bowling drops two big first down passes and it forces Arkansas State to punt it away. Hunt is able to drive UL-Monroe down field and they kick a 20 yard field goal before half to make it 24-14. Hunt comes out of the half and fires off two 30 yard passes to Perry Carter Jr. which helps set up a 37 yard field goal for Hughes and makes it 27-14. After two incompletions, Bonner finds Marcel Murray out of the backfield for a big gain of 28. He tries to go deep to Adams Jr. but it is underthrown and picked off by Josh Newton and that will be his 4th and will probably be the end of Bonner's day despite the valiant effort for a comeback in the first half. A three and out forces UL-Monroe to punt it away and Ogbegor returns it 57 yards for the touchdown and Arkansas State is back in it, 27-21. UL-Monroe doesn't let it last for long as a good mix of run and pass help them drive down the field but they are stopped for a 44 yard field goal and Hughes nails it to make it 30-21. As suspected, Hatcher trots out for the next drive and looks to get Arkansas State this win late. He quickly finds Reed Tyler for a 17 yard reception to get the drive started. Hatcher throws deep to Bowling but he drops it once again, could the snow be a factor for him today? He finds Adams Jr across the middle and Tyler on the next play. Hatcher uses his feet and escapes pressure and is able to run 33 yards before being tripped up at the 1 yard line and he punches it in for a touchdown on the next play and it makes it 30-28 late in the 3rd. Both teams trade a few punts back and forth to start of the fourth quarter. On the first play of an Arkansas State drive there is a facemask on UL-Monroe and that puts Arkansas State at the 30 and at least field goal range. Hatcher finds Roshauud Paul for an 8 yard gain and then Murray has a couple good runs before Hatcher escapes pressure and makes a dangerous throw into the endzone but Bowling comes up with a huge 11 yard touchdown catch and Murray punches in the 2-point conversion to make it 36-30. The Arkansas State defense gets better as the game goes on and forces another three and out and with 4 minutes left, UL-Monroe puts trust in their defense and punts it away. Hatcher finds Paul for 6 yards and then runs a speed option play for a gain of 12 to get into Warhawk territory. In a gutsy call, Hatcher throws deep to Adams Jr. in the endzone one-on-one and Adams Jr. comes down with it for a 48 yard touchdown pass. Hatcher finds Adams Jr. again for the 2-point conversion to make it a 14 point game 44-30, and that may effectively seal this comeback! But not so fast, as Hunt reminds them what he did earlier in the game and carves up the defense with passes of 26, 19, and an 18 yard pass to Carter Jr. to make it 44-37 with two and a half minutes left. UL-Monroe has all three timeouts but Arkansas State is usually not one to lay down and run the ball out. Arkansas State goes against the grain and it works. They only pass once and Graham converts on third and short to use UL-Monroe's last time out and a big 22 yard rush by Murray ices the game and Arkansas State kneels it out for their second straight come from behind victory!
