Re: Return of the Empire | New England Patriots

Patriots' Mailbag: Week 7

Patriots Blog -- The New England Patriots are preparing for their second divisional matchup of the season against long-time rival, New York Jets, who will be starting rookie quarterback Justin Fields out of Ohio State University over Sam Darnold. The Jets currently possess a 3-2 record coming off the bye week.

We take this opportunity as we approach the midway mark of the season as well as the trade deadline to explore some interesting topics relevant to our New England Patriots.

Why is our defense so terrible?
The Patriots are in very unfamiliar territory with the defense that they have fielded. They have the worst defense in the league overall, easily the worst passing defense in the league (although they do have the best rush defense in the league, which paints an odd visual picture).

The stats build an incredibly curious picture as to why the Patriots' defense has been so lackluster in the first seven weeks of the season. They allow the most points and the most passing yards, and yet are top five in interceptions (tied for second with seven), second in sacks, and tied for first in fumble recoveries.

The team incorporated the likes of Patrick Peterson and Earl Thomas III, former Pro Bowl-caliber defensive backs, to fill in for the free agency departure of JC Jackson and the retirement of Devin McCourty, and although both of them have scored touchdowns, they have left a lot to be desired. They might be a step behind the game at this point athletically, though their high football IQ has put them in good spots.

The edge-rushing has been atrocious, especially since John Simon and Chase Winovich both went down with injuries almost a month ago. Both are confirmed to be out against the Jets, and then will be questionable for the following week.

The team has managed to pull out a winning record thus far, but Coach Belichick needs to pull together a better gameplan if this team wants to make a run.

Can we discuss David Andrews' new deal?

The Patriots announced midweek that they had locked up center David Andrews to a two-year contract worth approximately $18 million. This is a good sign that the team is starting to sift through the contracts that are about to expire at the season's end and that they are dedicating themselves to improving.

Andrews would have reset the offensive line market had he hit free agency during the off-season, and he was close to joining former Patriots' guard Joe Thuney to going to market before the Pats hit him with a tag.

The team is reportedly in discussion with the representatives of Stephon Gilmore for a possible extension. The team is adamant that they want to move forward with Gilmore and continue to field a competitive secondary, with Gilmore being the leading contributor to that. He is currently tied for first in the league with three interceptions.

Possbile Quarterback Competition incoming?

Jarrett Stidham has fielded every snap under center for the Patriots so far this season ever since Mitchell Trubisky was given his walking papers at the end of pre-season and rookie Trey Lance has been relegated to the bench.

Stidham has played alright for the Patriots, throwing for 1,484 passing yards for 8 passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions, completing 65% of his passes. Not great, but when he gets in rhythm, he was been reliable.

The team has remained fairly mum on their quarterback situation, but Philip Rivers has been in discussions with possibly coming aboard and providing some veteran relief if Stidham continues to struggle. Rivers reportedly wants to compete this season but is looking for a start position if he cannot retire with the Chargers, who are currently relying on the second-year talents of Justin Herbert.

The next week or so (leading up to the audience-grabbing return of Tom Brady's return to Foxborough next week - more on that next week) will be crucial for Stidham.

Nice win versus Jacksonville. QB play needs to get sooo much better though cause that pick-6 could’ve been the a bad omen. You rebounded well, but it’s going to be a clear running focused attack until you get better QB play imo. Gurley found his legs after a couple so-so games.

Stephon Gilmore is balling out, so that’s a good sign of things to come hopefully.

Stidham has been serviceable but there's been a couple of times I've wanted to throw my controller at the wall trying to throw with him. Todd Gurley is the only reason we have victories so far. And key turnovers, even though our defense is horrendous.

Thanks for checking in. Time to wallop the Jets.
