BISMARCK TOPS WEST FARGO, HEADED BACK TO DAKOTA BOWL

by Caesar Black | Nov 2, 2012 6:47 pm

Bismarck defeated West Fargo 28-7 in their second round playoff game to lock up a spot in their sixth straight Dakota Bowl.

Bismarck scored one touchdown in each quarter. QB Cade Cannon threw two and ran in a third and Layne Johs scored one on the ground as well. Brett Adam was on the receiving end of both of Cannon's touchdown passes.

West Fargo struggled on offense, putting up just 108 total yards. QB Craig Bracken was sacked six times in the loss and the running game was non-existent, accounting for -21 yards with the sacks figured in.

Following punts by both teams to open the game Cade Cannon put Bismarck on the board with a 17 yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Cannon connected with Adam for a five yard touchdown pass four seconds before halftime to make it 14-0 at the break.

Johs scored on a three yard run late in the third quarter, pushing the Bismarck lead to 21-0.

Finally, midway through the fourth quarter Bracken connected with Jamal McDonald for a 40 yard gain down to the Bismarck three yard line. A play later he found tight end Andy Wyatt alone in the endzone.

Less than a full minute later, following a long run, Cannon connected with Adam for another touchdown to put the game away.

For the 11th straight game this season Cannon was named the player of the game. He threw for 243 yards on 19 of 24 passing with two touchdowns. He added 94 yards rushing on ten carries, along with a score.

Layne Johs ran for 106 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 38 yards. Brett Adam led all receivers with 112 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions.

West Fargo's Bracken threw for 129 yards and a touchdown on 10 of 14 passing. Runningback Adam Boone managed just five yards on six carries. Jamal McDonald had 60 yards on three receptions.

“It's pretty special.” Bismarck head coach Mark Gibson said after the win, speaking on his teams success over his tenure. “We're certainly not taking it for granted. We've been on both sides of it so we know how either result feels. It's pretty fresh for us.”

Bismarck will be paying very close attention to the Fargo South vs Bismarck Century game which kicks off in a few moments at the Fargodome.

Bismarck will be trying to win their fourth championship since 2008.

Bismarck Century defeats South in 3A football semifinals

FARGO - Friday marked the fifth time in the last six seasons Fargo South and Bismarck Century have played with a trip to the state title game on the line.

The 2012 chapter of the South-Century rivalry went the way of the Patriots.

Century defeated South 16-13 in the North Dakota Class 3A state football playoffs at South High School.

Leading the way for the Patriots was senior running back Ryan Gesellchen, who rushed for 147 yards on 32 carries.

"It was a fun game to play in," Gesellchen said. "We came out as a group and produced. It was awesome."

Gesellchen's biggest carry came with 3 minutes, 12 seconds left in the third quarter when the 6-foot-1, 185-pound back punched in an 18-yard touchdown run.

That touchdown gave Century a two-score advantage that held up.

The No. 2-ranked Patriots (9-2) advance to play No. 1-ranked Bismarck in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. It is the second consecutive year the Patriots and Demons have met in the title game. Bismarck won 21-3 last season.

"Our motto this year was unfinished business," Gesellchen said. "We are going to go back and get some business done."

The Patriots went right at the Bruins from the start.

Senior Brennan Doan returned the opening kickoff 56 yards to the Bruins' 36-yard line. Six plays later, senior quarterback Jared Fischer scored on a 3-yard keeper on fourth down.

"Special teams was huge for us," Century head coach Ron Wingenbach said. "I thought field position was gained by our special teams unit. The opening kickoff really set the tone for the game. That was huge to go up 7-0, and that was set up largely by our kickoff return."

South answered with an 18-play drive in which it converted on two separate fourth-down situations, including James Johannesson's 26-yard touchdown which came on a fourth-and-9. The Bruins missed the extra-point kick attempt on a fumbled hold.

In total, the Bruins had three special teams miscues on Friday. The second was a misdirected snap on a punt that resulted in a safety.

Johannesson scored his second touchdown on a 16-yard run with 10:58 left in regulation. South held the Patriots to a three-and-out on the ensuing drive, but couldn't cash in after its next drive stalled on the Century 35 yard line where the Bruins' third special teams misstep occurred.

Another high snap denied senior place kicker Jacob Weiler from even attempting a 53-yard field goal that would have tied the game.

"Give Century credit," South head coach Troy Mattern said. "They came out exactly how I'm sure they wanted to and they took it to us. We were on our heels for two and half quarters. We seized a little momentum late, but we just couldn't make the big play when we needed to."

South had two more possessions in the final six minutes of regulation, but both ended after failed fourth-down conversions.

It was a totally different atmosphere than the first time the two teams met on Aug. 24, which resulted in a South win. Snow fell prior to kickoff and blanketed the field.

"Everyone figured this game would be won or lost between the tackles," Wingenbach said. "I thought our defensive staff did a great job of prepping our kids. South is a very explosive team and we knew we would have our hands full. To hold them to 13 points was outstanding.

"Offensively we found just enough to win."

Johannesson finished with 112 yards on 26 carries for South (8-3).

BISMARCK DOMINATES CENTURY TO CLAIM BACK TO BACK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

by Caesar Black | Nov 9, 2012 8:47 pm

Bismarck has now made it two in a row by defeating Century by a score of 35-3 in the AAA state championship game. Bismarck claimed their fifth title since 2000 and their fourth out of the last five.

Cade Cannon, who won the player of the game in each of Bismarck's 12 games this season, was dominant again. He threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for two more while accumulating over 400 yards of total offense. The four scores give him 52 total for the season, along with nearly 4,800 yards.

“It's the way we talked about the season going when we started two a days.” Cannon told me. “After we won it last year we felt like anything less this season would be a step back. We talked about losing the championship a couple years ago. We talked about that loss to Mandan. Everyone was committed and everyone worked extra hard. Dream season for sure.”

After a scoreless first quarter Cannon ran up the middle for a three yard score on a QB draw early in the the second quarter. Century put together their best drive of the game but settled for a 43 yard Neameyer field goal just before halftime to make it 7-3 Bismarck.

Bismarck put up four touchdowns in the second half and Century never got past the 50 yard line again.

Cannon was picked off on a deep ball intended for Brett Adam early in the third quarter but Century was not able to capitalize on the takeaway.

Bismarck made it 14- 3 when Cannon connected with Adam for a 13 yard score midway through the third quarter. Cannon stood in and took a big hit on the play, lobbing the ball to a wide open Adam who made a leaping catch just inside the endzone. Later on the quarter Cannon put a Century defender in the spin cycle en route to a 24 yard touchdown run that made the score 21-3.

Early in the fourth quarter Cannon tossed his second TD pass of the game to TE Justin Thorson. Layne Johs added a six yard TD run to cap Bismarck's next possession, putting them on top 35-3 with just a few minutes left. After stopping Century on downs Mark Gibson sent out his second team offense to run a few plays before sophomore QB Jacoby Davis took a knee, a play he's run a few dozen times this season.

“It's fun.” Cannon said when I asked what it felt like to be on the sideline for the end of most of their games this season. “Cody's on the second team and 'Coby's a good friend so it's fun to see those guys get some snaps. We don't get to see the JV games much.”

Layne Johs ran 18 times for 107 yards and a score. Brett Adam had for receptions for 47 yards and a scores, Justin Thorson caught four passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. Defensively Riley Plant led the team with nine tackles and Lee Braunagel added six.

Century QB Jared Fischer completed just 2 of 12 passes for 37 yards. He was sacked once and picked off once. Fischer was under constant pressure from the Bismarck defense. Ryan Gesellchen managed 38 yards on nine carries and Fischer gained 30 on nine carries. Drew Wiseman led the team with 29 yards on one reception.
