The offense is slowly improving. Still major issues as far as offensive line play, receiver drops, and turnovers, but I don't think the season will end winless! Defintely, defense needs some help badly. With three 3-star recruits still interested in WIU, even just getting one of them to commit would be a big add and likely a starter from day one.

Thomas is having a great season and will be tough to stop. Hoping we can try to keep the run game in check as that will burn us early if not. If the offense can limit turnovers and short drives, there may be a chance in this one.

Thanks for checking in guys!

Re: Neckst Level Leathernecks | A Western Illinois Leathernecks Dynasty (NCAA 06)

Cobbs steamrolls Leatherneck defense in record-setting night
Western Illinois embarrassed in blowout loss, falls to 0-8

North Texas' Patrick Cobbs set a new NCAA Divison I-A single-game rushing record, gaining 412 yards on just 22 carries, beating the original record of 406 set by TCU running back LaDainian Tomlinson in 1999. His 8 rushing touchdowns also tie an NCAA Divison I-A single-game record, matching a total set by Illinois fullback Howard Griffith in 1990. North Texas also scored their third-highest points total in school history, as they completely dominated Western Illinois in an 80-14 home victory.

Cobbs started off his rushing rampage early, taking an opening drive carry 62 yards for his first score of the night. Western Illinois was not able to get anything going offensively in the first half, with a missed 45-yard field goal attempt the closest they came to points all half.

After two long touchdown runs by Jamario Thomas and Cobbs put the Mean Green up 21-0, WIU running back Attley Lawson fumbled an option run for the only Leatherneck turnover of the night. Cobbs scored on the very next play to put North Texas up 28-0.

By halftime, the North Texas lead had grown to 38-0 after a field goal at the end of the half. This lead would grow to 59-0 through three quarters, and Western Illinois finally mustered a score in the fourth quarter, as the Russ Michna found Terrence Hall on a fade to the back left corner of the end zone to make it 59-7.

Following two more Cobbs scores, Lawson would score on a rushing touchdown from 4 yards out, making the score 73-14 with just over a minute to play. Cobbs wasn't done yet, continuing to run wild with a 46-yard touchdown run with less than 30 seconds to play. This score gave him the rushing record and tied the touchdown record.

WIU head coach Don Patterson seemed deflated following the crushing loss.

"We took a huge step back from the improvements we made over the last couple games. We didn't turn the ball over like we have been but we also couldn't stop their (North Texas) rushing attack at all. We just have to take this one and move on."

North Texas makes it four straight wins and moves to 5-3 while Western Illinois drops to 0-8. With just four games remaining, they will look to avoid a winless first season in Division I-A play. The Leathernecks will be back at Hanson Field next week for a matchup with Miami (OH) University.

Re: Neckst Level Leathernecks | A Western Illinois Leathernecks Dynasty (NCAA 06)

Western Illinois HB Travis Glasford suspended two games

According to a WIU Athletics press release, Western Illinois star running back Travis Glasford will be forced to serve a two-game suspension due to a violation of team rules. The junior running back will miss contests against Miami (OH) and Appalachian State and will not be eligible to return until WIU's final road game on November 19th against Navy.

Glasford's exact rule violation wasn't named, and head coach Don Patterson declined to give much detail about the suspension when asked about it during a press conference.

"We will be without Travis (Glasford) for the next couple games. That's all I'm going to say about the matter."

Glasford is in the midst of a sensational season, as he currently sits at fifth in the nation in rushing yards with 1,068 yards through seven games. He also has seven rushing touchdowns. Glasford has also been a threat through the air, recording 46 receptions for 477 yards (both good for second behind Terrence Hall) and a team-leading six touchdown receptions.

Glasford should be able to play in WIU's final two games of the season against Navy and Illinois State barring any extensions or additional violations. This will be a tough blow to a struggling Leatherneck offense who has heavily relied on Glasford throughout the season.

WIU's depth behind Glasford is thin, with redshirt senior Attley Lawson and senior Charles Hayden being the only other running backs on the roster. Western Illinois will likely turn to Lawson as a fill-in starter. Lawson has dealt with issues fumbling the ball this season, losing the ball three times on just 15 rushing attempts. His 15 carries have gone for 88 yards and 1 touchdown, and he has added 37 additional yards on 9 receptions this season. Hayden has not recorded any snaps yet this season, but should see some action in Glasford's absence.

Losing Glasford highly impacts WIU's already minimal offensive output for the next couple games, and they will have to lean on quarterback Russ Michna and receiver Terrence Hall significantly more to produce.

Re: Neckst Level Leathernecks | A Western Illinois Leathernecks Dynasty (NCAA 06)

Starting offensive lineman suspended one game
Senior left guard Jason Baksas has been suspended for WIU's next game against Miami (OH) due to an academic violation. Baksas is the leader of a weak offensive line and the Leathernecks will now be missing two key offensive players this weekend, after the news of Travis Glasford's suspension. Baksas has started all eight games so far this season.

Hall could see running back reps in Glasford's absence
Leading receiver Terrence Hall has already taken on time at the cornerback position this season, and he is now taking snaps at running back in practice this week. Hall has more carries and rushing yards (19 carries, 96 yards) than backup running back Attley Lawson (15 carries, 88 yards) this season. Lawson and Charles Hayden are listed as the #1 and #2 backs for this weekend, but Hall may outcarry them as the WIU offense looks for someone to lean on with Glasford out.

Johnson to visit this weekend
Chicago native Josh Johnson will take his official visit to Macomb this weekend when the Leathernecks face Miami (OH). The three-star outside linebacker from Brother Rice also has Michigan and Notre Dame on his Top 3 list. Johnson would make an immediate impact and likely start from day one for Western Illinois.

Western Illinois will welcome another MAC opponent to Hanson Field this weekend as they prepare to face the Miami (OH) University Redhawks. Miami started off their season with an impressive win on the road against Ohio State, but have failed to win a road matchup since while splitting their last 6 games. Currently sitting at the bottom of a strong MAC East division with a 2-3 conference record, the Redhawks will look to wrap up their non-conference play this season with a perfect 3-0 record.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scouting Report: Miami (OH)

TOP 5 PLAYERS
WR Martin Nance | R-Sr. | 94
OLB Terna Nande | Sr. | 92
CB Darrell Hunter | Sr. | 90
QB Josh Betts | R-Sr. | 88
C Todd Londot | Sr. | 88

The Redhawk offensive attack begins with the explosive connection between QB Josh Betts and receivers WR Martin Nance and WR Ryne Robinson. Betts doesn't have much mobility, but his arm talent more than makes up for it as he has put up 22 touchdowns to six interceptions this season. Nance and Robinson have combined to reel in 17 of those 22 touchdowns and will give the Leatherneck secondary issues if they are not contained early. Nance is a big, sure handed target at 6'5", 210 lbs, while Robinson is small and can evade defenders with ease. Redshirt sophomore HB Brandon Murphy leads a young backfield group with a solid 529 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 136 carries, and two touchdown catches in addition. One key player to keep an eye on: redshirt freshman LT Josh Satterthwait. He has been starting in place of LT Mark Kracium, who went down with a season-ending injury earlier in the year, leaving a weak spot on an otherwise solid offensive line.

The Miami defense features three members of the Preseason All-MAC First Team, all of whom can make a difference in a hurry. DE Marcus Johnson brings pressure off the edge, and has gotten to the quarterback four times this season. OLB Terna Nande has the quickness to make plays all over the field, showing through his 58 tackles, four sacks, five pass deflections, and two fumble recoveries. Senior CB Darrell Hunter is one of the fastest corners in the nation and can keep with any receiver he covers. He will be tasked with locking down WIU's Terrence Hall, which could cause huge problems for the 'Necks as they will need to utilize him early and often without their number one weapon in Travis Glasford.

Re: Neckst Level Leathernecks | A Western Illinois Leathernecks Dynasty (NCAA 06)

WIU offense sputters without Glasford
Turnovers, mistakes cost Leathernecks in ninth loss

The Western Illinois Leathernecks struggled in all three phases Saturday night, as the Miami University Redhawks dropped WIU to 0-9 with a 69-10 blowout at Hanson Field. WIU desperately missed star back Travis Glasford in the loss, as the run game failed to get going and offensive drives failed to create points.

Western Illinois started off the game with a three-and-out, but made a big stop as they deflected a 4th-and-3 Miami pass to get the ball back around midfield. The WIU offense drove close enough for a Justin Langan field goal attempt but he would miss wide left from 41 yards.

Speedy Miami receiver Ryne Robinson took a screen pass on the next drive and outran the defense, scoring the first points of the night to put the Redhawks up 7-0. On WIU's next drive, the offense came up big with not one, but two fourth down conversions, driving again into field goal range. This time, Langan would put it through from 42 yards out, cutting the Miami lead to 7-3.

On the first play of Miami's ensuing drive, Ryan Riddle would intercept Josh Betts over the middle, giving the 'Necks a chance to swing the momentum in their favor. The offense would only go backwards, leading to a punt.

Miami again ran a screen pass for Ryne Robinson on their next drive, but this time it was blown up by Terrence Hall for a loss on third down, leading to a field goal to make it 10-3. WIU would again punt, and Ryne Robinson would take it 57 yards for a score to go up 17-3.

After another WIU punt, Miami drove inside the WIU 5-yard line, only for Betts to throw a play-action interception in the end zone to linebacker Wyatt Green. Miami would still get their points before half, however, as on their next drive, Betts found Martin Nance on the sideline, who would make a move and go all the way for a 32-yard score to give Miami a 24-3 halftime lead.

The wheels really fell off for WIU in the third quarter, starting with Brandon Murphy's opening half kickoff return touchdown. WIU's first drive went three-and-out, and Robinson would return yet another punt for a score, making it 38-3 rather quickly.

WIU again went three-and-out, and Robinson kept on impressing as he hauled in a sensational touchdown grab in double coverage on the next Miami drive. Two Russ Michna interceptions would lead to a pair of Miami rushing touchdowns by Murphy and Akim Lannaman, extending their lead to 59-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

Western Illinois finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter, as Michna found Marco Thomas for a 12-yard strike. WIU would turn the ball over three more times in the final quarter (two interceptions, Terrence Hall fumbled punt return) and Miami turned these takeaways into ten more points. Miami had no issues as they rolled to a 69-10 win.

In Travis Glasford's absence, the WIU offense failed to create an identity, as Michna and Hall were both shut down from the beginning, and Attley Lawson had trouble finding running room until later in the fourth quarter when Miami brought their second team defense in.

"Obviously, we missed having him (Glasford) out there tonight," head coach Don Patterson said following the loss. "We need other guys to step up and make plays and that just didn't happen the way we would've liked for it to and you saw the results."

Western Illinois drops to 0-9 and Miami improves to 5-3. Western Illinois will play at least one more game without Glasford as they travel to play Division I-AA opponent Appalachian State next weekend.
