MVS, Kenny Clark, Mason Crosby outlast
Bengals in 19-17 nailbiter

By Mike Scott | October 10, 2021

__________________________________________________ _____________________

In a second straight matchup against an AFC North foe, the Packers looked to return to the win column against Cincinnati. Any victory, however, would have to come without rookie first-round cornerback Eric Stokes, who picked up a shoulder injury in practice and was unavailable for this one. Through the first quarter, Joe Mixon made his stamp in the early going, picking up a 35-yard catch. On first and goal from the 6, Kenny Clark picked up his first of 3.5 sacks on the day, knocking Burrow back to the 19. Clark then blew up a screen to Mixon on the next play; however, Mixon cut up most of the defense for a 22-yard catch from the flat to the endzone to give Cincinnati a first-quarter lead, 7-0.

The Packers looked to answer, and despite a 17-yard grab by MVS on third and 11 and two nice runs by Jones and Dillon, Love was eventually sacked out of field goal range to force a punt. On the ensuing Bengals drive, Ja'Marr Chase came up with a big third down conversion to end the first quarter, and after a few more chunk plays, Burrow looked for Tyler Boyd in the endzone, but he dropped it. Stephen Gostkowski converted a 33-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

Green Bay moved the ball a bit on its next drive, including on a thirteen-yard run by Jones on which Allen Lazard blocked two different guys. Following a 16-yard sideline grab by Davante Adams, picking up another first down to the Bengals' 36, the drive stalled and Mason Crosby knocked through a 49-yarder to get the green and gold on the board, 10-3. The teams traded fourth-down stops from there, as CJ Uzomah committed a bad drop to turn the ball over to the Packers, who weren't able to advance past the Bengals' 43 before a turnover on downs of their own against Cincinnati's stifling pass defense. On the next Bengals drive, Uzomah made up for his mistake, slipping out for 30 down to the Packers' 23! As the Bengals inched closer to the end zone, Joe Barry's defense knew that its big time stars had to come up big, and that's exactly what Jaire Alexander did - jumping in front of a route to make a leaping interception in the endzone!

That momentum shift was exactly what the offense needed, as two plays later, Jordan Love finally found some space in the Bengals secondary, hitting a streaking Marquez Valdes-Scantling down the right sideline for an 80-yard score with under a minute in the half! Tied up at 10, the Packers went to the locker room pumped up and revitalized.

Green Bay couldn't turn that momentum into sustained offensive success though, as they opened up the second half with a three-and-out. But the defense stepped up with another timely play, as Joe Burrow was hit by Rashan Gary, who stripped the ball for Kenny Clark to recover at the Packers' 42! Adams made a nice grab out to the Bengals' 32, but MVS committed a drop on third down to stall the drive. Nevertheless, the Packers took a 13-10 lead on a 51-yard field goal by Mason Crosby.

Thanks to relentless interior pass rush from Kenny Clark, who picked up another 1.5 sacks over the next couple of drives, the Bengals came up empty. Unfortunately, though, early in the 4th quarter, Mixon finally did what he'd been threatening all game, picking up 67 of his 165 rushing yards on a single play, waltzing into the end zone to give Cincy a 17-13 lead.

On the next drive, the Packers finally had some more fireworks. A massive 30-yard run by Jones got them into Bengals territory down to the 29, followed by an 11-yard third-down curl route by Adams to the 15. After Love scrambled down to the 3, they couldn't punch it in, and Crosby hit a 29-yarder to bring Green Bay within a point. After some changes of possession, Dean Lowry made a huge stop on Joe Mixon with two minutes to go, and Cincinnati punted to the Packers' 41 with 1:55 remaining.

The drive began with a 10-yard first-down run by Jones, followed by an 11-yard scramble by Love. Jones picked up six on the next run, and the referees added on another 15 because of a face mask by Logan Wilson! A few runs take the clock down to 0:25 and force Cincinnati to burn all three timeouts as Mason Crosby lines up for the go-ahead 30-yard field goal...and nails it! It's 19-17 Packers!

Starting at his own 25 with 0:21 left and no timeouts, Joe Burrow dropped back to pass and was taken down by who else but Kenny Clark, adding his final sack of the game as the clock runs out on the Bengals for a Packers victory!

FINAL SCORE: Packers 19, Bengals 17.

It might not have been pretty, but the offense and defense both made plays when it counted. Jordan Love only hit four receivers on the day despite throwing 42 times, but his picture-perfect 80-yard strike to MVS was the source of the Packers' only touchdown of the day. On the defensive side of the ball, the Packers' six sacks and one interception of Joe Burrow negated the 245 total yards by Joe Mixon.

After the game, Adrian Amos spoke about Kenny Clark, saying that he's "just a big boy who keeps his head down and keeps pushing" and noted that the 26-year-old is one of the strongest guys he's ever seen. "You should see the way this guy eats, man, it's crazy," Amos joked. The Packers hope he will continue to eat as they try to drag themselves back to .500 next week.

NEXT UP: The Packers (2-3) travel to Soldier Field to take on their archrivals, the Chicago Bears (4-1), in the first matchup between the new generation of Jordan Love and Justin Fields in this rivalry!

Sorry for the wait! I've been super burnt out lately from work, but I have a pretty solid backlog - I'm at Week 14 in the game right now - so there should be more coming soon!

Re: Green Bay Packers: Whole Lotta Love

NFL Week 5 Wrap-Up
By Mike Scott | October 12, 2021

Following the conclusion of Tuesday's practice, head coach Matt LaFleur held another press conference. He noted that while Jordan Love's performance has been up-and-down (but encouraging) so far, that he has been proud of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who came up to him in the locker room after their win against the Bengals and begged for more opportunities.

And on the defensive side of the ball, he gushed about Kenny Clark, who he thinks is on his way to becoming a premier defensive lineman in the NFL, calling him a "beast" who is a piece of this defense that the Packers cannot do without. "When you see him load up the stat sheet like that, you see what we see every single day in the team facility. It's not always the stats that pop out at you, but when you watch his tape, he's just wreaking havoc in there on every single play. The guy is just an animal," LaFleur said. He referred to the victory against Cincinnati as a "tough, gritty win" that shows the character of the ball club.

When asked his thoughts about the 4-1 Bears and their early season success, LaFleur demurred, stating that he's just going to watch the tape and figure out what it takes to beat those guys. Beating Chicago is a "top priority" for him, and it shows: LaFleur is 4-0 against the Bears in his tenure with the Packers, outscoring the Monsters of the Midway 107 to 57 in those matchups. He'll look to do the same with his new quarterback against the Bears' new quarterback Justin Fields this Sunday.

Love breaks out, outduels Fields in
44-34 battle of young passers

By Mike Scott | October 17, 2021

__________________________________________________ _____________________

Coming off a tight win against Cincinnati and heading into Soldier Field to try and chase down their archrival, the 4-1 Chicago Bears, the Packers knew they would have to bring the heat. They did early, getting the Bears to a third and 19, but rookie signal caller Justin Fields countered effectively with a 32-yard strike to Damiere Byrd, and after a David Montgomery catch down to the 4-yard line for 15, fullback Ben Mason punched it in to give the Bears an early lead.

However, Jordan Love picked an excellent time to have the best game of his young career. It began with a drive on which he went 5 for 5, including three throws to Marquez Valdes-Scantling, one of which went for 19 yards and a touchdown to tie it up! Defensively, the Packers still couldn't keep up with the Bears, though, as they let up a 33-yard catch and a 29-yard run by David Montgomery and he pounded it in from the three yard line to put Chicago up 14-7.

Yet again, though, Love and the offense showed continuous poise, as early in the second quarter, he ripped off chunk throws to MVS and Allen Lazard, capped off by a second 19-yard MVS touchdown grab! Finally, on the ensuing possession, the Packers made a stop deep in the redzone after Rashan Gary pressured Fields on third, but the Bears nevertheless converted a 20-yard field goal to regain the lead 17-14. The offense kept it flowing, and despite a sack on Love to make it third and long, Matt LaFleur decided to dial up a deep shot to Davante Adams, and he came down with it on a post corner route for a 47-yard touchdown!

Still in the second quarter, the game was well on its way to an offensive explosion. Down 21-17, Justin Fields took his own shot deep and although he wasn't able to complete the ball to Darnell Mooney, Jaire Alexander was called for a rare defensive pass interference, bringing the Bears 42 yards down the field to the 19. On the ensuing play, Fields found Allen Robinson for a 19-yard score to once again put the Bears out in front, 24-21 with just 18 seconds remaining.

While most of the time, the Packers would have simply kneeled into the half, A.J. Dillon took a ten-yard run up the middle and LaFleur called timeout. Then, MVS made a sideline grab for 11 with just three seconds on the clock at the Green Bay 44 yard line. On the final play of the half, Love looked to channel some of the Aaron Rodgers magic with a Hail Mary, and although the pass fell incomplete, the back judge called DPI on Tony Jefferson, who held down Allen Lazard in the endzone! Instead of settling for a chip shot field goal with no time on the clock, LaFleur made the aggressive move to go for the touchdown. From the 1 yard line, Love took the ball and barreled right in behind rookie center Josh Myers for the score! With that, the Packers took a 28-24 lead into the half after 30 minutes of fireworks.

Love put together the best half of his career thus far, completing a nearly impeccable 15 passes out of 16 attempts for 204 yards, 3 passing touchdowns, and a rushing score. He was backed by MVS (8 receptions, 99 yards, 2 TDs) and Davante Adams (4 receptions, 72 yards, 1 TD). On the other side, Fields had a similarly impressive stat line: 10 for 15, 167 yards, 1 touchdown.

If you thought the second half might lead to some better defensive adjustments, you would have been...somewhat right, somewhat wrong. Although the Packers settled for a 52-yard field goal to open the half and take a 7-point lead, Chicago immediately came back and tied it up, getting down the field again on the back of Montgomery, which led to a Fields scramble and score. But again, Green Bay would not be denied, and after an Aaron Jones first down and a Robert Quinn sack, Davante Adams absolutely dusted cornerback Rasul Douglas for a 58-yard streaking touchdown along the sideline!

Holding a 38-31 lead, the Packers finally accomplished something neither team had done to this point, and that is force a punt! Late in the third, the offense continued with a 13-yard grab by Adams, followed up by a 31-yard run by Aaron Jones, who had surprisingly been bottled up to that point. He opened the fourth with another 11 yarder down to the Bears' 28, but Chicago came up with a stop that led to a 39-yard field goal and a 41-31 Packer lead.

Coming perilously close to a game-ending turnover, the Bears would convert on a 4th and 6 with a Fields scramble and then recover a Fields fumble forced by Za'Darius Smith near the Packers' 10. They couldn't quite punch it in, though they brought the deficit back within 7 on a 27-yard field goal with about 4:30 remaining.

The Green Bay offense had been a churning engine all day to this point, and when it mattered most, they delivered. Jones kicked off the drive with a 12-yard run, followed by an RPO bubble screen executed to perfection for a 13-yard catch by Lazard. After crossing midfield, the Packers faced a first down, and a timing curl route by Davante Adams led to a catch to Chicago's 31 and a conversion at the two-minute warning! Although they couldn't run the clock out fully, as the Bears made a stop using their remaining two timeouts, Green Bay turned to Mason Crosby, who knocked through a 45-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining that put this one on ice.

FINAL SCORE: Packers 44, Bears 34.

Love finished the game with a perfect passer rating, completing 23 out of 25 throws for 334 yards and 4 touchdowns, while adding four runs for 13 yards and an additional score. And, perhaps most importantly, he turned the ball over zero times. Love threw two touchdowns each to Davante Adams (who ended with 7 grabs for a whopping 154 yards) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (a career-high 10 catches for 119 yards). After a slow first half, Aaron Jones ended with 22 carries for 113 yards. And defensively, although they allowed 34 points and nearly 300 yards to Fields and 130 total yards to Montgomery, the defensive line sacked Fields 4 times, including 2 by Za'Darius Smith. The team allowed only 10 points in the second half, tightening its belt to help the Packers back to .500.

When asked whether it felt like everything was working, Love said after the game that he just tried to take what the defense was giving him and go through his progressions. He credited Valdes-Scantling and Adams for making some great plays and padding his stats. "And to do it against those guys, in this rivalry," Love added with a smile, "is just a hell of a feeling, man."

NEXT UP: Heading home to Lambeau Field, the Packers (3-3) look to run their winning streak to three against the Washington Football Team (2-4) and Ryan Fitzpatrick!

Re: Green Bay Packers: Whole Lotta Love

NFL Week 6 Wrap-Up
By Mike Scott | October 19, 2021

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur used his typical Tuesday press conference to discuss what makes this a special group of players, noting especially that Marquez Valdes-Scantling has come into his own after years of hard work with the team. He lets reporters know that he told MVS that "they're counting on him and Davante [Adams]" to continue to help Jordan Love (who was awarded NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance on Sunday against Chicago) progress as a passer.

LaFleur said that guys like MVS, Valdes-Scantling's close friend Kenny Clark, and Za'Darius Smith came up to him during practice and talked about bringing their games to the next level and that's the type of camaraderie he loves to foster in a locker room. "Everyone has each other's back and wants to get better to help out everyone else around them. It's awesome to see."

LaFleur added that backup tackle Dennis Kelly suffered an elbow injury blocking on one of Mason Crosby's three field goal attempts and that they would reevaluate him in a week or two.

Re: Green Bay Packers: Whole Lotta Love

Packers defense dominates in
30-0 trouncing of Washington

By Mike Scott | October 24, 2021

After Jordan Love's most effective game as a pro, the Packers tried to continue their momentum at home in their alternate jerseys against the scuffling Washington Football Team, and that's exactly what they did right from the start. Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is known for his fireworks - some good, some bad - and this was definitively a Bad Fireworks game. After he found Adam Humphries for 21 yards on the opening play of the game, he lost control of the ball when Za'Darius Smith came off the edge for the first of his four sacks of the day, jarring the ball loose for a recovery by Rashan Gary, who returned it all the way for the score! Taking an early 7-0 lead off of the turnover, the Packers defense chomped at the bit. On the ensuing drive, Fitzpatrick moved the Football Team down to the Packers' 21 on a ball to Ricky Seals-Jones, but Z came up huge again with the second of his whopping four sacks on the day, again knocking the ball loose for a Kingsley Keke recovery!

Having been the beneficiary of two strip sacks before he even stepped on the field, Jordan Love looked to pick up where he left off against Chicago. He led the Packers from their own 45 down to the Washington 18 largely in part to a 16-yard grab by Aaron Jones, but the turnover bug bit him again, as he misfired toward Davante Adams in the endzone and was picked by William Jackson III.

In the second quarter, Green Bay started to lean on its running game, as Aaron Jones popped a 14-yarder on 4th and 2 as well as a 12-yarder down to the Washington 6, but they couldn't punch it in and settled for a 10-0 lead thanks to a Mason Crosby 26-yard kick. Later in the quarter, Love settled in a bit. After a roughing call by Montez Sweat extended the drive on 3rd, Love picked up the next 4th down with a QB sneak, then converted a 3rd and long with a 15-yard pass to MVS and followed it up with a 20-yard strike to Allen Lazard! On 4th and goal from the 2, Matt LaFleur opted to go for the touchdown and handed it to the bulldozing A.J. Dillon for a 17-0 lead! Following a WFT punt, Love connected with Davante Adams, who made an incredible catch over two defenders with ten seconds left, to set up a 48-yard Mason Crosby field goal to give the Green and Gold a 20-0 halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same. After Crosby put through a season-long 56-yard field goal to open the second half, Aaron Jones followed it up on the next drive, sneaking out on a screen pass for an 18-yard score to make it 30-0 Packers. The bigger stories of the second half were a series of injuries: Marquez Valdes-Scantling injured himself making a block in the third quarter, dislocating his shoulder, Dean Lowry also left with a shoulder injury, and Preston Smith left with an abdominal injury. None of the three returned, though the Packers were able to complete the impressive shutout to extend their win streak to three.

FINAL SCORE: Packers 30, Football Team 0.

Though the defense dominated Fitzpatrick with 6 sacks (4 from Za'Darius Smith) and an interception, the offense didn't quite find its footing. Love finished completing 16 of 26 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, and despite rushing for 120 yards, Aaron Jones needed 31 carries to do so. Also, no receiver surpassed 55 yards. In the post-game press conference, Matt LaFleur said it "wasn't our best game, offensively," and stressed fundamentals and "staying ahead of the sticks" on offense. Right tackle Billy Turner agreed, and in the absence of David Bakhtiari, stated it's his job "to tell the young kids that we gotta help the offense protect the ball." For now, though, the Packers are happy to ride Za'Darius Smith and the engine of this defense to a 4-3 record.

NEXT UP: On a short week, the Packers (4-3) head to Glendale to take on the surprisingly struggling Arizona Cardinals (2-5) on Thursday Night Football!
