Re: #CHIEFSKINGDOM | Madden 22
K.C. Runs Away From The Raiders By Tyler Barrister | Kansas City Star | October 4th, 2022 Behind 341 yards and a couple of touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs blasted the Raiders on their home field for the second straight season in a 36-10 drubbing of the Raiders. Mahomes, who completed 26-of-39 passes, also added a rush touchdown in the second quarter. Last year, the Chiefs took it to Las Vegas by a 41-14 score, and have won the last three road games against the Raiders. The Chiefs have now won five straight on the road against the Raiders, outscoring them 180-98 in that stretch. However, the win came at a pretty high cost -- defensive ends Mike Danna and Joshua Kaindoh left with foot and groin injuries, respectively. Neither one returned to the game, and are listed day-to-day per head coach Andy Reid's post-game press conference. Right tackle Lucas Niang (ribs), defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton (knee), and wide receiver Mecole Hardman (oblique) also exited the game with injuries without returning to action, and are day-to-day as well. Wharton's knee injury was the same knee that knocked him from the game last week. With Andrew Wylie a late scratch due to illness, Justin Skule filled in at right tackle for the Chiefs after Niang's exit in the fourth quarter. If Danna, Wharton, and Kaindoh are out for any length of time, that's a significant chunk of defensive line depth missing. Chris Jones played some defensive end last year, but was a pretty average player metrics-wise out there. Expect to see some movement on the practice squad front, or the Chiefs may look to swing another trade for depth as they did last year with Melvin Ingram, who was not re-signed and ended up in Seattle. Could that be a move made again down the line? "Yeah, it was a pretty tough game with injuries," Reid lamented in his post-game presser. "We had a few guys step in and produce, but it may end up being that they'll be counted on for much longer than just today; we'll just have to see what Rick (Burkholder) tells us over the next few days." Hardman got the Chiefs on the board first with a nine-yard shovel pass touchdown in the first quarter, and would later catch a 59-yard (nearly all air yards) pass from Mahomes in the second quarter before leaving the game after catching a short pass later in the quarter. Mahomes would score from three yards away on a read option play one play after Hardman's long reception to put Kansas City up 17-0 midway through the second frame. The pass rush showed up early and often, sacking Derek Carr five times, and pressuring him on another dozen dropbacks. Chris Jones had three of the five sacks, with Danna and Kaindoh each collecting one sack apiece. With Denver's loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday night, the Chiefs now hold a two-game lead in the division.

Snap Counts: Las Vegas By Tyler Barrister | Kansas City Star | October 4th, 2022 Each week throughout the season we will track the snaps played by every player on Kansas City's roster. As the season goes on, we'll also update the totals for the year. Here are the snap counts for the 36-10 road win over the Raiders. There were seventy-one snaps on each side of the ball. Offense: Patrick Mahomes 71, Trey Smith 71, Joe Thuney 71, Creed Humphrey 71, Orlando Brown, Jr., 71, Travis Kelce 69, Tyreek Hill 68, Cedrick Wilson 66, Lucas Niang (I) 62, Clyde Edwards-Helaire 51, Noah Gray 34, Michael Burton 26, Mecole Hardman (I) 19, Darrel Williams 19, Ty Fryfogle 16, Romeo Doubs 16, Justin Skule 9, Tyler Badie 8, Jody Fortson 7 As we would expect, Patrick Mahomes and four of the five offensive linemen played all seventy-one snaps on offense for the Chiefs, with Justin Skule playing the final nine snaps at right tackle in place of Lucas Niang, who is expected to miss the next three to four weeks with a rib fracture. He didn't look 100% healthy, but Clyde Edwards-Helaire played fifty-one of the seventy-one snaps at running back. With Mecole Hardman also expected to be out multiple games with an oblique injury, Tyreek Hill and Cedrick Wilson took on the lion's share of the reps at wide receiver, with rookies Ty Fryfogle and Romeo Doubs playing sixteen each. Noah Gray, Michael Burton, and Darrel Williams continue to hover around their season averages to date. Defense: Tyrann Mathieu 71, Rashad Fenton 71, Chris Jones 70, Juan Thornhill 68, Nik Bonitto 67, Brian Asamoah II 63, L'Jarius Sneed 60, Charvarius Ward 59, Willie Gay 55, Derrick Nnadi 51, Nick Bolton 49, Donte Jackson 46, Markquese Bell 31, Joshua Kaindoh (I) 28, Tershawn Wharton (I) 20, Ryder Anderson 19, DeMarvion Overshown 18, Mike Danna (I) 17, Dorian O'Daniel 15, Damon Arnette, Jr., 10, Kana'i Mauga 3, Khalen Saunders 1 There were also seventy-one snaps on defense as well, with Tyrann Mathieu and Rashad Fenton playing each one. Chris Jones played all but one, and Juan Thornhill, Nik Bonitto, Brian Asamoah, and L'Jarius Sneed all logging at least sixty. On the plus side, Nick Bolton saw a season-high forty-nine reps, with Charvarius Ward, Willie Gay, and Derrick Nnadi all playing at least fifty-one. Things are going to get a little thin at defensive end, although the Chiefs have signed Jason Strowbridge off the Bills' practice squad after clearing waivers. Chris Jones will likely see some time out on the edge this week with the injuries to Mike Danna and Joshua Kaindoh, but there's already some chatter that the Chiefs are going to look to the trade market once again for pass rush help. Melvin Ingram has been talked about, but there's also talk that they might aim higher, with the Jets' Marcus Davenport, Washington's Montez Sweat, and even Cam Jordan in New Orleans and J.J. Watt in Arizona as possibilities. |

Re: #CHIEFSKINGDOM | Madden 22
Looking Ahead: Defensive Line By Tyler Barrister | Kansas City Star | October 6th, 2022 Ryder Anderson ($0.6M) Nik Bonitto ($2.4M, $2.53M, $2.68M, $2.87M; $5.6M guaranteed) Michael Danna ($0.96M, $1.08M; $0.13 guaranteed) Chris Jones ($22.4M, $20M; $21.9M guaranteed) Joshua Kaindoh ($0.95M, $1.06M, $1.18M; $0.36M guaranteed) Derrick Nnadi ($7.5M, $8M, $8.5M; $13.9M guaranteed) Tershawn Wharton ($0.9M) Khalen Saunders ($1M; $0.23M guaranteed) Dante Stills ($0.85M; $0.2M guaranteed) Jason Strowbridge ($1.3M) Above figures are on yearly basis, last number is guaranteed after semicolon With the losses of Frank Clark, Alex Okafor, and Melvin Ingram off last year's squad, the Chiefs have invested pretty heavily in the front four since, drafting rush end Nik Bonitto with their first-round pick, and re-signing Derrick Nnadi to a three-year extension shortly after the season ended. They've also managed to get some nice contributions from less-heralded players in Tershawn Wharton and Mike Danna, with the former being an undrafted free agent after the 2019 draft. Danna was a fifth-round selection in 2020, while Joshua Kaindoh was taken in the fourth round in 2021. Kaindoh is now out for at least the next two months after being put on injured reserve with a groin injury, and is eligible to be activated in time for the Week 13 game. The top interior duo of Chris Jones and Nnadi will be under contract through 2023 (2024 for Nnadi), but after those two, there is some uncertainty. Wharton has shown flashes after going undrafted three years ago as a bit of a tweener at 275 pounds; but doesn't really have the athleticism and length to play on the perimeter, so he has to get by as a high-motor player. Khalen Saunders had a solid rookie year, but has been largely AWOL since that season. The Chiefs made Dante Stills a priority free agent signing after the draft, and has played a total of a dozen snaps through the first four games with a couple of healthy scratches. All three of the latter guys after Jones and Nnadi will be free agents this offseason. This is not a deep class of interior players or edge rushers in the draft, with the top guys such as Will Anderson, Jalen Carter, and Bryan Bresee expected to go in the first dozen or so selections with much of the rest of class on Day Two or later. Fortunately, the upcoming free agent class is loaded with guys that could make an impact next year and beyond, and the Chiefs have already been evaluating potential trade partners for pass rush help as reported earlier in the week. They've also looked into guys that have multiple years remaining, such as Minnesota's Danielle Hunter. |

Re: #CHIEFSKINGDOM | Madden 22
Kansas City at Buffalo: Storylines By Tyler Barrister | Kansas City Star | October 9th, 2022 Here are three things we're watching as we're about an hour from kickoff on Sunday Night Football: 1. Battle of top redzone defenses This will be a battle between an unstoppable force and an immovable object -- something will have to give here. The Chiefs, normally not a great redzone defense under Steve Spagnuolo, have given up just six touchdowns in thirteen opponents' trips to the red zone. The Bills under Leslie Frazier have always been very good in the redzone, and this year hasn't been any different; it's just that the offense hasn't been as good as they were the last several years, which is mainly why they're 1-3 to begin the season. 2. Chiefs' defensive line depth to be tested With Mike Danna and Joshua Kaindoh now out for some time, the Chiefs' defensive line depth is going to get tested in a major way tonight. Josh Allen is one of the best at moving the football on the ground from behind center, and expect them to employ that same strategy as the Chiefs have never defended the QB run extremely well, except on a few occasions. Chris Jones is likely going to get some snaps at defensive end, and former Bills practice squad member Jason Strowbridge should get a few reps here and there as he gets acclimated to the Spagnuolo defense. Defensive tackles Khalen Saunders and Dante Stills should also get a little more run if Jones plays outside more. 3. Rematch of 2020 AFC title game This is the first time these two teams have met since the AFC Championship in Arrowhead, so expect the Bills to come out firing early and often against a depleted Chiefs defense. Kansas City will also be out Mecole Hardman as one of their receiving options, along with tackle Lucas Niang. Rookies Ty Fryfogle and Romeo Doubs should take on more expansive roles tonight. CHIEFS INACTIVES: Mike Danna, Mecole Hardman, Elijah McGuire, Lucas Niang, Dare Rosenthal, Justin Shaffer BILLS INACTIVES: Tommy Doyle, Jake Fromm, Isaiah Hodgins, Akiem Hicks, Mitch Morse, Antonio Williams

Re: #CHIEFSKINGDOM | Madden 22
Chiefs Blow Huge 4th Quarter Lead In Defeat By Tyler Barrister | Kansas City Star | October 10th, 2022 Kansas City held a 28-13 lead at the half, but a blocked field goal by Buffalo late in the third quarter seemed to give the Bills a new lease on life, as they went on to score sixteen unanswered points in the fourth quarter, including a walk-off field goal from Tyler Bass in a 29-28 loss at Buffalo to drop the Chiefs to 4-1 on the season. Patrick Mahomes also had a costly turnover in that quarter, as he threw an interception that was tipped into the air; and then caught by, Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Edmunds also blocked the Harrison Butker field goal attempt late in the third, almost single-handedly keying the Bills' second-half turnaround. The roar in the stadium after the interception was deafening. "Great players make great plays, and I didn't see him on the dig that I was looking for on that play," Mahomes said in the post-game press conference. "Tyreek was breaking open, but he it read well and was able to get a hand on it to make a play on the ball." Devin Singletary went on to score on a nine-yard touchdown on the resulting drive, which was the first touchdown since early in the second quarter when Zack Moss took a screen pass from Josh Allen fifty-two yards for a score. Despite going just 1-for-6 on third down, the Bills converted first downs on twenty other occasions, all on first or second down. It was frustrating for the Chiefs as they couldn't get Buffalo into third down situations, because when they did, things typically went pretty well' as they had both of their sacks on third down, and also Rashad Fenton's interception of Josh Allen in the first half was a third down play. Darrel Williams got the Chiefs started with a short touchdown run in the first quarter, the first of two touchdown runs on the day. Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for just sixteen yards on ten carries, and was largely ineffective most of the game. Kansas City ran for just seventy-six yards, with Williams' thirty-one yards leading the way. Being that it was the first game between the two teams since the 2020 AFC title game, things were a bit chippy in the first quarter. Then the Chiefs took a stranglehold on the game, largely quieting the raucous crowd at Highmark Stadium. Allen summed up the feeling in the locker room at halftime, as they came out and looked pretty lethargic in the early going. "I'll be honest, things felt pretty grim at the half," he said. "We told them, all we need is one play, one break, and we can get back in this thing. Sure enough, we block the field goal that would have put them up three scores, and from there, the game was totally different. Otherwise, you're looking at 1-4 and a pretty big hill to climb over the last three months of the year." He threw for 388 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, although he cost them seven points in the first half with an interception deep in Bills' territory. Mahomes would go on to hit Tyreek Hill on a five-yard touchdown just a few plays after that turnover, one of his two TD tosses to Hill in the second quarter. Kansas City will try to regroup as they head into the bye week before hosting the struggling 49ers the following week. "It's a tough loss, guys really gave it their all, but that blocked kick was a big momentum shifter," said Chiefs coach Andy Reid. "You could really feel it in the stadium after that, and then the Edmunds kid made a nice play on Pat's throw, and we were off from there. Just gotta put it behind us, and get ready for San Francisco in a couple of weeks. It's a home game, should be a good one."

Re: #CHIEFSKINGDOM | Madden 22
Sweat Acquired From Washington By Tyler Barrister | Kansas City Star | October 11th, 2022 In need of pass rush help with the losses of Michael Danna and Joshua Kaindoh to injury, the Chiefs have acquired edge rusher Montez Sweat from the Washington Football Team for a pair of draft picks -- a 2023 third-rounder and a 2024 second rounder. To clear room on the roster, rookie offensive lineman Justin Shaffer was placed on waivers. Sweat has 3.5 sacks through his first five games this season, although the Football Team's season appears to be heading south as they've lost their last four games after winning Week 1. He probably won't be the last to go -- they've been rumored to be shopping other players, such as cornerback B.J. Reed, quarterback Taylor Heinicke, and defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis. Washington will take roughly a $3.1 million cap hit for trading him, but get two picks in the process for a rebuild under a (likely) new coach, new team name to be announced in the coming weeks, and new quarterback that has played pretty well in the early going. Originally drafted with the 26th pick in 2019, Sweat was rumored to be high on the Chiefs' draft board before Washington grabbed him with their first pick. He's in the final year of his rookie deal, and he immediately becomes a franchise tag candidate if he blows up over the final three months of the season, so Kansas City should feasibly get him at least through next season. Reaction to the trade has been mixed, as he has just 24.5 career sacks coming in, but he missed nearly half the season last year due to injuries, and still managed to get five sacks and thirty-one pressures despite that. Much of the consternation is due to the Frank Clark deal that blew up after the Super Bowl victory run in 2019-2020, but Sweat is younger than Clark was, and cost much less in draft capital. Speaking to that, it's a pretty big win for Kansas City cost-wise, as they don't spend any first-round picks to get him, and still have their top two selections in the upcoming draft for 2023; as well as just a half-million cap hit. With all of the high-end defensive line talent they've accumulated in the last few drafts, Washington is unlikely to be able to afford all of them in the coming years, as they have Chase Young, Da'Ron Payne, and Ioannidis all on expiring or near-expiring contracts. Young's contract won't expire until after next season, but there's already momentum to get an extension done with him. The latter two are both free-agents-to-be this upcoming offseason, and just drafted a big-time defensive tackle with their top pick in the 2022 draft in Jordan Davis. Kansas City also looked into acquiring J.J. Watt from the Cardinals, Brandon Graham from Philadelphia, and even Nick Bosa from San Francisco. The asking price, reportedly, for Bosa was two first-round picks, and at least one first-rounder was in the conversation for Watt. Graham would have been another short-term solution, albeit likely cheaper from a draft capital perspective like Melvin Ingram was a year ago -- GM Jacqueline Davidson was considering longer-term with the acquisition of Sweat, who isn't on the backside of his career. |
