Re: Birds in the Trap -- A Louisville Cardinals CFRevamped Dynasty

No Cunningham, No Problem: Satterfield optimistic despite QB situation
Courier-Journal

Louisville, KY – In his weekly pregame press conference, Cardinals Head Coach Scott Satterfield announced Senior QB Malik Cunningham will not be suiting up against #11 NC State, as was projected earlier in the season.

Cunningham missed games early in the season after originally injuring his shoulder against North Carolina in week five. Even in good health, Cunningham's production was not living up to the lofty expectations of those who felt he could be one of the top-flight names in the ACC this season. Although he was completing just over fifty percent of his passes, Cunningham has only thrown six touchdown passes and currently has six interceptions on the season. Cunningham's 150 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns are a step down from the dual-threat's junior season.

Sophomore QB Evan Conley, while throwing an alarming 17 interceptions himself, has emerged as one of the top guys to watch in the ACC. He has completed fifty-five percent of his passes for a little under 2000 yards already this season, most of that success coming in the last few weeks during Cunningham's second stint. Given the success of Conley in Cunnigham's absence, many wonder if we'll even see Cunningham again whether he is healthy or not. "Malik Cunningham is this team's starting quarterback." said Scott Satterfield, "He's the leader in the locker room, he's been helping call plays the whole time he's been out. He's an active team leader even though he hasn't been on the field as much as we would've liked so far this season. I think it's a great opportunity for Evan to put Malik in a competitive situation, that we've witnessed him thrive in the summer."

There have been qualms of a boiling QB rivalry all season and questions about who Satterfield would choose in the hypothetical situation of the Senior Cunningham coming back for his starting job if underclassmen Conley performed well in Cunningham's absence. The first time around, Cunningham got the nod. If Evan Conley can lead the Cardinal offense past it's toughest test yet on the road against NC State, does Conley take the #1 spot on the depth chart?
