It is not so much that their bottom line would be hurt as it is that is not being hurt at all by forcing anyone who wants mp3 functionality to subscribe to their in-house music service.
As you have stated, along with many others, there isn't much desire to have the ability to simply play music on these next gen consoles as there is to have the ability to import custom sounds or songs into our games. The general audience has not made use of these features in the past and as long as Sony has any income flowing in from a streaming music service then they have no ambition to change. Look how many other streaming services there are out there, companies are tripping over each other to make a buck in the music genre these days. Amazon just launched there service yesterday, in fact.
And I am glad that you can see the glass half full when it comes to customer service and a company going above and beyond to appease their loyal customers. I, however, have been around a while and see things a bit differently. Especially in the cut-thoat gaming industry where profit margins are slim and every move is carefully planned and usually based off of what the competition is doing and when. You don't think it was coincidence that Sony sat on the PS3 for as many years as they did and then only released a new console in the very same month as their major competitor, do you? Just the same as I don't think it was an oversight to not include mp3 playback functionality out of the box on PS4.
