    Returning to Franchise

Was an MLB the Show player for many years. Haven't picked one up since the Show 13, but with my team finally good again I'm excited to grab it and start an offline franchise. Was hoping some who have been playing the game more recently could answer some questions

    1) I need a PS4 -- been scouting used ones on the usual sites. I've read that framerates on the Pro sucked in 2017. Have they improved in the past year or two? Since PS5 will probably be out in a year or two I didn't want to invest a ton in a ps4 needlessly. I'm not a graphics snob, but do have a 4k TV. So is a Pro a must for me or can I get away with a slim ps4 on a 4k tv?

    2) Back to the game -- have they improved veterans rating dropping drastically though the year? I remember having to go in and edit them because 10 points would fall off their overall from week to week.

    3) One of the things I used to have trouble with was hitting homers with average rated power guys. My team would have guys who hit 30+ homers and I seemed to be able to replicate their numbers in my franchise, but guys who averaged 15-20 homers would hit around half that. Could be my technique, but I read about contact hitters being more effective this year and was wondering if anyone saw similar and it was made better over the years.

    4) Seems like graphics got a slight but not overwhelming bump in the past 5-6 years since I picked up the Show. What features have they added recently that make the offline gameplay better?

    Thanks all!

4k TV or not, the PS4 Pro offers the best experience. I'm not going to list a mountain of details in the differences, but the Pro is worth the extra cost, hands down even if MLB The Show is the only game you will ever play on it.

Depending on your gaming desires, you may want to pick up a Vita cheap and get MLB 15 (the last one made for that system). I am still playing that more than the current version (mostly because the Vita better fits my gaming needs).

        1. PS4 is worth it for the faster framerate mode. Really helps a lot with spotting those pitches coming in.

        2. Unfortunately, regression is still awful. It's better than it used to be, but still really bad.

        3. This is much improved. You don't need a slugger to hit a home run anymore.

        4. Most of the improvments are on the field. While there has been nothing revolutionary in the time since you played, the game has received constant improvements and fixes for on the field play throughout the entirety of the PS4 era.

        Some notable changes:

Variable cpu outfielder pathing. In any version before 15, of the CPU could possibly make a catch in the outfield, 99.9% of the time they would. A lot has been done to curb that, and you will see bad fielders take bad paths to catch a ball.

More double play possibilities: back in the PS3 era, if it wasn't a x-4-3 or a x-6-3 (x= 4,5, or 6), the double play was impossible. They continue to add various defensive possibilities to the game that weren't possible before.

Directional hitting: adds an extra layer of strategy to the timing hitting interface. Not sure what year that got introduced.

These are just some examples. They've added a lot of little things, but it adds up.

I have a very old TV (crummy apartment problems) and I always thought the PS4 Pro was only worth it if you had a 4K TV. Are you saying I should look into it even on an older TV? Thanks

Yeah. It offers a very noticeable improvement on frame rate. I have a 4K tv and still run it on the “fastest” setting (which I believe is 1080). It’s SO smooth and that is critical on a game where timing is so critical.

Of course everyone has different financial situations so it is up to you if it is feasible for you.
