Contract extensions and SDS: An apology?

In a couple of the franchise threads that cropped up I ragged on SDS for adding contract extensions. My argument was extensions are unrealistic since players rarely signed them as they got closer to free agency, and were very low on the list of needed additions and changes to the mode.

    Oops.

Just in spring training, we've seen Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, Mike Trout, and now Chris Sale pass on free agency and agree to long-term deals with their current teams. Granted, I don't think SDS has any knowledge whatsoever of the business of baseball or how owners squeezing players has led to stars avoiding the market, but they still somehow fell bass-ackwards into something realistic. I also question how well it will be executed; however, extensions have become a much bigger part of building teams and are in the game.

    Kudos to SDS, I guess.

Yeah good timing on their part. I just hope the budget system has gotten some love as well.

Last year's AL Cy winner Blake Snell just re-upped as well.

Yep, it's that time of year. I think it's easy to forget about what happens in spring training because the season's so long.

Glad that it’s in, but pretty sure they stated that you could only negotiate midway through the season for a few days or something. So it wasn’t like at anytime you could extend a contract. And not sure if you can extend anyone that isn’t a free agent to be.

During the March to October/Franchise stream it was shown on screen that there are two times extensions are allowed - during Spring Training, and Trade Deadline prep (by which I assume they mean that named phase, which starts in July soon after the All-Star break).

Don't know about the question of extending anyone, or only those whose contracts are expiring. Might be something to ask our early adopter, now that the Q&A is open.

Does anyone remeber from the stream if Goldschmidt was asking for 100 mil for 4 years or 5? If it was 4 then I would definitely like to apologize for my skepticism, because that's pretty much dead on what he signed for in terms of annual cost

He accepted at 100.5 / 5 years(backloaded, no specifics on that were shown), so it's pretty far off from what he is actually signing. And just so people are aware, that example was from the 2019 season - it showed Andrew Miller as being 33.

I'm getting this stuff from the stream breakdown btw - I know this stream wasn't archived for whatever reason (and got taken off of youtube too).

Hmmmm. Okay then. Yeah he basically left 30 mil on the table then. Bummer. I had a feeling this would be the case though. I think my exact word from that thread were "if you think Goldschmidt is signing for anywhere near 20 mil a year, then I have some Beach front property in Arizona to sale you"

Sorry to go off topic but I think Blake snell completely screwed himself! 10 mil a year for a young cy young winner.

                  Ill take it tho. Hah!

Re: Contract extensions and SDS: An apology?

While I'm excited this is in the game now, as a single team control player, I have two concerns when it comes to the CPU handling this:

                      1) That they extend virtually everyone and no big name FA's hit the open market to value worth.

                      2) Signing extensions more than what market would be, thus handicapping them financially going forward.

Guess we'll find out soon enough.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: Contract extensions and SDS: An apology?

The extensions are fine but it is hardly a major consumer of developer time. The code already exists in the off season. All they did was move it to other times during the season.

On a list of things to add/fix which wouldn't require a lot of developer time this was probably at the top.

As much as I’ve always tried just doing single player and what happens, happens. I always find myself doing 30 team control and truly focusing on rebuilding how I’d imagine their GM would and institute a few house rules regarding FAs so there is always a healthy FA pool.

IRL one of the most lopsided trades in decades. White Sox had him under an extremely team friendly contract.

Well if Moncada and kopech pan out it definitely won't be lopsided. The Sox werent contenders or even close to it with sale, so in hindsight it might be the smartest move Kenny Williams ever made. Only time will tell I guess
