Franchise question - contract extensions

I don't like to gain an advantage over cpu teams. I know the cpu doesn't do contract extensions during the season. I also know they do sometimes sign pending free agents during the 5 day period prior to free agency in the offseason.

The question is do they do contract extensions in the offseason for players who aren't pending free agents?

Yes they do.

Sometimes they also offer long term contracts to arbitration players

The cpu will sign arbitration and renewable players occasionally to longer deals and buy out some years.

They do not offer extensions to players that are not under team control.

I personally do not use extensions because in baseball extensions are relatively rare. Players in the last year tend to not sign extensions or sign in exclusive period because the mlbpa wants them to hit the open market.

Each year there are only a handful of extensions doled out.

Thank you. If the cpu is doing it I'll do it once in a while. I try hard not to gain an unfair advantage over the cpu but at the same time I don't want to give the cpu an advantage.

The cpu controlled Cubs re-signed Bryant to 3 years @ 8 million a year. That's dirt cheap for a player of his quality. I'm going to extend Michael Fulmer's contract. That's probably the only on for me this offseason.

8 mil/year for bryant? That seems pretty disturbing actually (unless finances have been adjusted in your league). You can't hardly get an average/slightly below average player for that amount. Even giving a hometown discount, he would never sign for that amount. I know...the computer doesn't know names

That's what I see him go for in most sims. Shortstop is another position that tends to be underpaid while they are younger. Baez and thr rest usually get 14-15 mil. Their second contract is usually more in line 4 years later. Not sure if the logic doesn't pay them because they are under 30 or what?

Pitchers salaries, besides closers, seem really good.

I usually have two franchises going, one where I just SIM and have fun going fast and another where I play one game every series or two.



I've found that the logic is pretty terrible for free agency but I "help" the computer out in year one. For example, the Yankees traded for Trevor Story at the deadline but then didn't resign him prior to FA. He was asking for $13M over 3 years so I offered him $31M over 7 including a team option before trading him back to the Yankees for a 47 D overall type (then released that player). I did that for 3-4 including Bryant, Baez, and Thor in year one (I don't recall any others). I noticed that it seemed to help benchmark with offers in year two or it just worked out to be "real" offers in my mind for the top FAs.


If I offer an extension, I try to use current players deals as potential frameworks. My team is the Mariners so after 2021 and Kelenic had ~80 games, I offered him a 9 year $103M backloaded including a team option similar to what Acuna signed with the Braves even though Kelenic would have signed for a lot cheaper with the CPU logic.



Not saying perfect or will help everyone but that is how I offer contracts in the franchise I'm playing.

I play default everything and I use manage mode. I leave it up to the developers to figure out all that stuff.

I’ve found 88 overall+ is the sweet spot for realistic deals. Anything below that, and guys like Bryant, Baez, etc will sign for 7-8 mil a year. Right around there you see deals that are much more in line with what you’d get in real life.

Judge routinely signs for 8/250, Story for 8/240, Syndergaaard returned after the ASB and tore it up and signed for 5/140 in one of mine.

I’ve noticed with my Mets this year it seems like SDS stopped the stars signing for like $12m aav. I looked at extensions for my players and there fairly reasonable.
This is what some of my guys are looking for
Nimmo 14.5 aav
Syndergaard 31.0 aav (don’t know what he’s smoking lol)
Conforto 22 aav
Some guys are to high or low but generally not bad. IMO
