    Re: Hitting tips

Go into batting practice and just look at different pitches for a round: spend one round just watching each individual pitch so you can get a feel for their speed, movement, break pts etc.

      Re: Hitting tips

I pitch on Hall of Fame, Classic.

But I hit on Veteran ... because I'm terrible at hitting. I gave up on All-Star this year, dropped a level and I'm very happy. OP, you sound like me. Maybe try what I've done ... I have given myself EVERY advantage, because I need the crutches to hit well. I have CPU pitch sliders down, I have my Contact at +5 and Timing at +5. I have Pitch Speed at -5. I use Guess Pitch 1/4.

If I start hitting too much, I will take Timing down or Pitch Speed up.

        Re: Hitting tips

        hi all,

after doing practice hitting for 200+ pitches, I have a question on pressing the x or the square buttons... Basically, does the timing of WHEN to press the button makes a difference in hitting the ball, affecting what type of of hits (HR, flyball, single, etc) you will get? I know the right stick will influence the direction of the ball, but does how soon you press the hit button makes any difference at all?

This has more to do with the LCD's response time and PS3 possibly delivering at a different frame rate.
This is true, I think they dropped the ball this year on the lag while hitting, I have a 56 inch LCD and I get lag hitting, makes it impossible to catch up to anything.

On my 26" LCD, I can hit any pitcher...and score a resonable amount of runs against a Beckett or Oswalt pitcher (5-7 runs per game). On my 46"....Edwin Jackson or any other career 5.00-7.00 ERA pitcher, I'm lucky to get 3 or 5 hits...much less score any runs.

This controller-LCD lag issue.... may explain why I can never catch up with high heat this year. I see the slightest flicker in the screen, and it seems like a graphic of me missing the ball... just kinda appears outta nowhere. And I'm sitting there thinking "I SWEAR I hit that ball."

I've had to drop from All-Star hitting last year to slider-enhanced Veteran (Timing at +5) just to get the contact I'm looking for.

Is there any solution to this potential problem? I'm on a 36" (whatever size is around that!) Sony, using 720p setting.

This LCD discussion is interesting. I have found the hitting harder than the last iteration I played (07) but I have only played on a 52" LCD. Huge TV.

I am regularly getting 9-10 hits a game but power hitting is off it seems.

Yeah, I've bumped up some of the sliders myself.

I bumped up the contact/timing sliders up 2 notches to the right. I just increased the power hits a second notch (previously just moved it to the right one spot).

When you say "3" you are talking 3 notches to the right correct? The default is zero and left is -1, -2 and right is +1, +2?

I also reduced foul balls and sped up the baserunners because I felt that third basemen were regularly making insane diving plays a good 10 feet into foul territory and then gunning out runners by 8 feet.

There should be a "game mode" in your LCD settings somewhere. There is one on my Samsung, anyways. That definitely helps reduce lag.

By 3 I meant 3 from the far left, that would be a -2 on your scale.

I have read page 4 and all it says is Swing direction in zone(press and release)..............Left analog stick. i'm new the show so i'm not quite understanding this. and I'm hitting in veteran mode. Can someone give me a more detailed explanation. Sorry thanks

I'm new to the show this year as well so I'm still learning. You can get a better explanation from the in game guide, which is only accessible from the pause menu. "Strategy Guide" at the bottom of the "Game Summary Menu", the one that looks like an '='. Specifically read the section on batting but it will definitely be beneficial to read the whole thing, it isn't very long.

Another tip is set the PCI (Plate Coverage Indicator) to on in the gameplay options. This will simply make the PCI visible as a yellow oval, it is always there but when set to off you can't see it. After a swing, whether it is a hit or not, you can check the timing and PCI by clicking in the left stick. This will show you the timing of your swing (Early, Late, Normal, ect.), the position of the PCI, and the location of the pitch combine to tell you the quality of your contact (Missed, Jammed, Normal, ect.).

The other good thing about turning the PCI on is you can judge the pitch location easier by checking the release point and travel of the ball in relation to the visible PCI oval. The visible PCI will also give you an indication of the effects of guess pitch/location as the PCI will shrink or expand based on a wrong or correct guess. I get the best results by leaving the PCI in the center until the pitcher releases the ball, then adjusting it to the location afterwords.

Also from my limited experience it seems that a players contact rating has a big influence on bad speed. I was trying to hit with a RTTS player and it was quite difficult. I was always late and felt I had little time to judge a pitches location and speed before I had to commit to swing or not. Going from hitting with my RTTS player or batting practice with a player with low contact to a major league level hitter is night and day difference in my case. With good hitters I would constantly be early with my timing. I would advise if you are having trouble to practice with exceptional hitters and work your way down, this is what I am doing to help improve my hitting abilities.
