Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***
When you log into OOTP, the game should always prompt you if there is a new version or patch available. Of course, you'd need to be connected to internet for it to know any better. You shouldn't need to do much of anything and your save files should be unaffected. Which is nice so you don't lose any progress if you get in deep with this beta version (or "beeta" version like Markus likes to say).Oh boy. The rabbit hole is open. Going to do stats only, let my assistant GM handle all international and minors, turn historical transactions off (like Skyboxer running with a 1985).
Now since we downloaded the beta yesterday what happens on the 21st? Our beta automatically updates to a full release? Or we download again and transfer the file we create on the beta?

Bolded part is something I do every year, lol. I'm a sucker for the expansion draft. Usually I will add Montreal and Vegas or Montreal and Charlotte or Montreal and somewhere in Mexico (like Monterrey or Mexico City). You mention deep rabbit holes? One year I was literally on Monterrey's Wiki page looking for demographic and economic data, thinking about what sponsors would support a team there... That's deep!Haven't started anything...lol. All this talk of rabbit holes, I not only fell into one, but kept finding newer and deeper ones to go through. That said, I think I've landed on doing two leagues, primarily.
One will be a league expansion creating a NC team to control and bringing back the Expos as the other team. The other league will be a historical somewhere in the late 90s with me added as a prospect. I might do a "what if" and take the steroids out of the steroid era.
I'm going full commissioner mode for the control. I'm going to leave most of the editing alone to start, but I like having the option to override, if needed.
Ratings will be off, scouting will be low, and I'll be in heaven!
I need commissioner mode, too. I would like to do challenge mode and unlock achievements, but the being logged in at all times (big brother!) and turning off "auto-sim until date" are dealbreakers for me.
The beauty of OOTP is you can do whatever. If you set up evaluate player AI to be 0% ratings, then the cpu is just as blind to them as you are. You can set AI evaluation to be any combo of: 1. ratings 2. current year stats 3. prior year stats 4. stats from two years ago. You could do 65:20:10:5 (close to the default) or 0:50:35:15 (more of a stats only setup)...or any ratios at all really.
I'm gonna try pitch by pitch at first. This will be the first year I'm diving in as in-game manager as well so I plan on experimenting big time with settings.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***
Yeah, that "rating weight = 0%" seems like it would be the equivalent of the AI playing "blind" too. Good to know.

Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***
Scouting reports and stats are vital when doing the draft. If you do stats only you will spend hours upon hours just digging through scouting reports, split stats, etc just to set up your own personal draft board.
Before you know it you'll look up and you've spent half your day just scouting college and high school kids.Comment

Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***
Don't ever trust OSA, hire a great scout and trust them. I usually shorten the draft to about 20 rounds after couple of years.
What I do is turn on current and potential ratings scale just for the draft and sort by potential. Reading the scouting report is very important, you can get a sense where the player is supposed to go in the draft.Comment

Yep I compare what they both say but usually lean far to what the scout says.Don't ever trust OSA, hire a great scout and trust them. I usually shorten the draft to about 20 rounds after couple of years.

Ok another question. In my 1985 Franchise I have "Can't Be Fired" on because it's one I'm really using to learn the game better.
Are you guys doing that or not.
About to create my Current League and not sure if I want to chance getting fired.
I know that's "real" but ...Joshua:

Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***
I usually leave that box unchecked. If you are in Commissioner mode you can toggle it on/off at any time so you are free to change your mind if you think you might get fired. You can also toggle on/off being in Commissioner mode itself if you don't want to use that except for "emergency" situations.Yep I compare what they both say but usually lean far to what the scout says.

Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***
A few things...
1. All of the draft eligible players have high school/college stats, so they are there for you to look at if you are firmly stats only in every possible way. There is also a "competition level" specified so you can differentiate a little bit between guys batting .500 against good competition and guys batting .500 against crap competition. It's tough going by just those stats with so many players, because a lot of them will put up comically high numbers. If someone hit .450 in high school, who cares? Doesn't tell you much. But, you could just ask your scout who to pick while keeping ratings off if you want.
2. I agree with using potential and scouting info in the draft. I think that makes it more enjoyable. You can turn ratings on just for the draft, but crank scouting all the way to very low or put a lower emphasis on ratings in the AI evaluation. That way you still get a good deal of uncertainty if you want it. If you want to know exactly who the best player is, hire a good scout, turn scouting accuracy to max, and make AI evaluation all about ratings. Also pay attention to exactly how positive the scouting report is--there are different levels of effusive praise.
3. Another piece of info that can be pretty helpful is going by the player's draft bonus expectation. Usually the guys asking for a $6-8MM bonus are the very top guys. It can be misleading though so best to use it as a supplementary thing rather than the only thing. You can also get some good deals if you play your cards right. The bonus amount they're asking for + amateur stats + competition level + scouting report when used together can give you a basis for doing a stats only amateur draft.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***
Wow, I'm impressed! Was playing a game at Fenway down 2-0 in the top of the 6th manage to score a run and shut them down. Go into the 7th Price is out and....rain and rain and rain and the game is called and I lose 2-1 in the top of the 7th one pitch into it.
Coming from The Show this was unexpected and phenomenal. Obviously the loss hurts, but I was surprised and pleased to see that outcome.Moderator

I like the idea of uncertainty. It would be nice to get 1st round busts but then sign a 12th round stud.

This happened to me too and it's a fun addition. In my case, it worked in my favor, as I won the game. (Felt like a cheap win thoughWow, I'm impressed! Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***
First "bug" ??
I looked online and it seems this was an issue before..
I claimed a player off waivers. I was awarded him but he never shows up in roster, even when looking at all players in organization. He is in "limbo" evidently
You can do a player search and he shows up as on my team but never in the roster area (MLB, ML, etc.. ) only way to get him to show up was to go to actions and have "AI Set up Organization"
He then showed up and all good. I just now have to go back and reset what I want changed...Joshua:
